I need to do a resume for school.  So, I updated my resume to reflect the major changes I have had over my career.  Even though I am changing fields completely, there are some relevant positions I have held (insurance, medical equipment companies).  My resume is two pages long with schooling experience, skills and other possible pertinent info.  Career Services has told me that this is not good and need to cut it down to one page.  If I do that and keep the main relevant companies, there are large date gaps of employment which don't look good to me.

So, what say you?  Do I shorten it and leave large gaps or missing info or just leave it to two pages?

Most resume collection databases used by HR will filter out anyone with major gaps in employment and the HR dept will never even see it.

In the old days when HR people got the resumes in the mail, that advice was valid. But these days it is not.

Also, that is better advice for a traditional college student. Not as relevant for a non trad.

I get resumes quite often. I like something simple and easy to read with no gramatical or spelling errors. I like it when time has been taken to format it in an easy to read way without making it too wordy.

I would include all the jobs, but use a simple 2 line for the jobs that you don't want to offer all the info on:

Job 3 Title - Employment Dates
One line blurb (Account Manager - medical supply company specializing in diabetes supplies

Job 4 title - Employment Dates
Key Point about job
Key Point about job
Key Point about Job

Make sense?

Two pages is good. Those resume services sometimes suck in their advise. You have list your experiences. My resume is 3 pages.
