OK, I get that a lot people work on commission.  But, just the first person jumps up and makes contact with you doesn't mean you want to work with them or buy from them.  I should have a choice too.  For instance, I need to get cable for my new house.  So, I called the 1 800 number with Xfinity.  Talked to some sales guy and got some information but didnt' make a decision.  Then I went to the local mall and realized they have an Xfinity office so I went there to get more info.  And, I would rather get it locally and help out a local salesperson.  And, I haven't made a decision to purchase but the Sales guy I talked to on the phone punched my info in as if I had placed an order.  So, she says she wants to help me but can't.  Anyway, I am not even going to get the package I talked about with him but the one she explained so she has to check with her supervisor to see if she can process it.

I agree. Just because you talk to someone doesn't mean they should 'claim' you.

On the flip side though, there were times I worked with a customer for an hour or more, going over all their options, and then when it was down to two, they would leave to think about it, come back and another salesperson would ring them up after I did all the work.

Yes, but that is just how it goes isn't it?  I mean, sorry but a salesperson does not own me.  I would assume that if you worked with other sales people there is some way to square that up.  But, that isn't up to the customer to sort that out.

And, part of this is why I just sometimes find it easier to call rather than to talk to people in person. I don't want to have to sort out who 'owns" my sale.

But, this kind of thing is a bit annoying. Years ago, when you wanted cable you just called the cable company and they set you up. It wasn't some competition for sales in that way like you are buying a car or something.

Oh, yea, I'm not blaming the customer there. The other salesperson should do the right thing, but some of them try to get away with it.
ETA: Which is probably why there are electronic ways to keep customers with the right person- but that can also be troublesome, as you have experienced.

We have two cable companies in town that compete, and a lot of people end up going back and forth between the two depending on the better deal at the time.

I really don't like the salespeople that remind you that they have to make money. I mean, duh. But so does everyone who works. That doesn't mean that I have to some allegiance to you because you were the first person to walk up to me. That is kind of annoying. And, not a good sales technique! lol

I had a sales person remind me that they worked on commission once when I was looking at a washing machine. Bought one somewhere else.

Yeah, that is annoying.  Have some tact as a salesperson.

We had just started our search and it was the first 5 minutes of looking.  Sheesh! Lol.
