It's just a stupid and insensitive thing to say with a lot of conjecture that is NOT Biblical. Instead of that nonsense how about "We don't know why some children die early". How about "we don't know but God loved your child and you had the blessing of knowing that wonderful human being" or something to that effect.
The man has been not right in the head for years. If you watch him long enough, you see evidence of possible cognitive issues.

I've quite often thought that Pat Robertson was not a good person for people to judge Christians by. Unfortunately, many times it's the worst among us that get the airtime.
At one time, he was very sharp. Knew what he was talking about.
With age, he has dulled.
I really believe he has some kind of cognitive issue.
