I know MM is interested in this and SB asked about it so I thought I'd make a new thread so as not to take over the daily. I watched the documentary called Fed Up last night. It's about childhood obesity. It was eye opening. I'm even thinking about making some drastic changes to my diet.
They started out with stats. They said it is not JUST AMERICA that is getting fatter. All of the world in general is getting fatter. Even the third world countries aren't as malnourished as they used to be. Some stats...
Between 2008 and 2012 gym memberships doubled.
Between 2008 and 2012 obesity rates also doubled.
In 2008 there were zero cases of Type 2 adult onset diabetes in teenagers.
By 2012 there were just under 58,000.
The statistics are pretty staggering. They talk about exercise. Our country has now become exercise crazy. And the experts have now learned that exercise has zero to do with being overweight. They said society teaches us that fat people are lazy, unambitious, and unmotivated. The doctors said that this is societies way of placing all the blame on the victim so that none of the companies that pump out sugar have to take any control for their actions.
Interestingly enough they said calorie in and calorie out was a fallacy the health system has taught for years. It is has been pounded into our heads that it doesn't matter where the calories come from they are all the same. This has been proven to be false. For example, the calories from a coke are digested and processed differently than the calories from a handful of almonds. The difference being that the almonds have more fiber so the sugar is processed more slowly and distributed over a longer period of time for more energy. The soda are quick calories that are dumped into your body and immediately stored as fat calories.
They talked about soda being the downfall of society. The government commissioned a study about the effects of soda on your body. The study came out that soda didn't make a difference on weight or health. Then the researchers had to apologize when it came to light that Coca Cola funded the research. New research has been done and they have found soda, particularly the sugar in it, to be as or more addictive to cocaine and heroin combined. And they said diet soda is even worse. They said when your brain craves the sugar in soda it's preparing itself for the addiction to be soothed. Then you put diet soda in and the brain is not satisfied because no sugar has entered the system. So the brain and body go crazy and want even more. They showed MRI's of people who had consumed cocaine and soda. The effects were the same.
They talked about how the government did a study to decide how much sugar we should have on a daily basis. It was 5 grams. But when the study came out all the companies like Pepsi, Coke, Kellogs, Nestle, and others petitioned Congress. They fought the study saying sugar wasn't an issue. So the study results were raised to 25 grams of sugar a day.
It talked about how they market commercials for kids. They did a study and let kids watch cartoons. One set of kids watched cartoons with only food commercials. The other watched cartoons with only non food commercials. The kids that watched tv with food commercials snacked 45% more while watching tv.
In the end it talked about how the big companies are fighting so hard for the government not to put recommendations on anything and not say sugar is bad. To just tell parents it's their own personal responsibility to feed their kids right. But then it talks about how for twenty years we knew smoking caused cancer and the big companies put pressure on the government not to demonize their product. They said that is what sugar is like. We need to rethink our attitude towards sugar. That people are feeding us the line that it's not a big deal when it is.
They also talked about Michelle Obama and her programs. In the beginning she promoted eating right. Lowering sugar intake and not eating processed foods. Then the big companies started getting angry at her so now she focuses on the "Let's Move" part of her program.
One thing I found interesting is the big companies lobbied to have food labels changed in regards to sugar. If you read the back of a package and look at the nutrition label it will give you the percent of every ingredient in your diet. Like fat is 45%, protein is 20%, and so on. Just making up numbers here. But if you look at the sugar content it does not tell you the percentage of sugar intake in your diet. Big companies lobbied for that. Why? Because most Americans are consuming about 125-150 grams of sugar a day when they should only be consuming 5.
Anyway, the movie is an eye opener. Very interesting and thought provoking. I can't put everything here but it's definitely worth a watch.

Yeah, I questioned that fact too. I don't believe that. I'm sure the rates have gone up drastically though.
I do believe this is not just an American problem. And I also believe that the big companies put pressure on the government so they can get what they want.

There is sugar in just about everything. I have started reading labels and the stuff they put sugar in is disgusting. Also, if something says low fat, they have probably added sugar to it in order to make it taste better. The low fat items have almost double the sugar as the regular items. I have started really watching how much sugar I put in knowingly. I won't be able to avoid it totally, but I want to be at least knowledgeable about where it's coming from.
Down to one Coke a day, and I can't finish it usually. Thinking about going to the mini cans.

The markets are consumer driven. We won't buy it if we don't like the taste. I can understand a companies viewpoint on that issue.

Do you see a theme?
Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.
We do need to be careful of what we eat and how much we eat. I hardly ever drink coke anymore but I no longer ever drink diet coke. Hardly ever eat chips or fast food and now when I do eat fast food I can really tell. I didn't gain any weight overseas when I visited my dd the last time and we ate a lot. They don't put preservatives in their food and you go out to eat you don't get very big portions. Kids now don't play like we did when we were little. They are attached to video games and eat chips and junk food all day. A lot of parents don't cook meals at home like our mothers did and when we went to mcdonalds or any other kind of fast food it was very rare.

They addressed the low fat thing. They pointed out that when you take the fat out it doesn't taste good so you have to add more sugar. Mostly double it. Just like you said.
Czech, that is what they recommended. Cooking from scratch. Not adding refined sugar. Just eating natural food. In the way it's grown. They said doing that can make a world of difference.

We cook from scratch here, so sugar is never added to our daily meals.
My biggest downfall is adding sugar to my cup of coffee.....and eating chocolate.
I cook from scratch too. But I was surprised how much sugar is in salad dressings, bagels, and things that I don't necessarily make at home.
This. There is a lot of hidden sugar.
And Czech, we buy it because it's so addicting. It tastes good so we buy it. It's a circle. The MRI thing was interesting. They also did studies on rats and found rats are more addicted to sugar than cocaine.

Yogurt and granola. Both have an amazing amount of added sugar.
I have started looking for yogurt with low sugar and high protein. You really have to read the labels carefully to compare. You can eliminate 10 grams of sugar per serving by choosing one yogurt over the other.

I hardly ever eat yogurt. You either get a ton of sugar or a ton of artificial sweeteners. It's like pick your poison.

I eat siggis. It has low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, and it's delicious!

If you have a separate organic or healthy food section, it can be found there too. Our grocery store has a separate refrigerated section for organic milk, etc. Siggis is in that special spot. It's yummy. Noosa is actually my favorite, but that has WAY more sugar than Siggis.
Granola was an eye opener for me. I had no idea it had that much sugar in it. BBQ sauce too. I knew it had sugar, but it has more than you think. And spaghetti sauce from a jar (which I used to use as a base for my own sauce) has a TON of sugar. So do canned tomatoes - just regular diced tomatoes in a can have loads of sugar. So even if you are cooking from scratch, you probably use some ingredients like that and you just have to watch them. I wouldn't have thought it could add up so quickly but it really does.

I knew someone would yell personal responsibility. The whole movie was about personal responsibility. It was about just how important it is to be personally responsible for what you eat and drink in the society we have today where such bad choices are constantly being rammed down our throat. Pun intended. It not abdicate anyone from making better choices. HOWEVER, it did say that as a country we are doing a huge disservice to everyone by allowing big companies to brainwash us into thinking that all this crap isn't dangerous to and for us. It compared it to smoking and how for so long we allowed big tobacco companies to brainwash us that smoking had no side effects whatsoever. But eating huge amounts of sugar is bad for us and does have way more consequences than we even realize. And we need to, as a country, realize that and stand up for ourselves and our children. You can take personal responsibility for yourself while at the same time working to change things for the better. And there is so much hidden sugar. Many times the things people think are "better choices" are actually higher in sugar.
This is the first generation that is supposed to live shorter life spans than their parents.
And if you think because you're thin that you're safe, you're not. They followed four kids. One boy cried because all his brothers were really thin and he was fat. They all ate the same food. When they tested all four boys body fat they came to find out the boys are all what they now call TOFI. Thin on the outside and fat on the inside. While the fat boy had a body fat content of something like 63% his other brothers fat content ranged from 28% to 48%. So they all had high fat ratios too.

I have been making radical changes to our diet trying to address some of my health issues. I've had to start making everything completely from scratch- broth, spaghetti sauce, salad dressing- all stuff I used to buy in a jar without a second thought.
After a couple of months of eating this way we can no longer stomach store bought. It's so salty it burns your mouth! And everything is sooooo sweet. It's gross.
Tang, that's kind of what they were saying. That we have been fed this whole line of there's no other way. We've just swallowed that we have to eat bad. And we don't.
And yes, they talked about yogurt and how much sugar is in it. And now we have yogurt for kids that has cookies, granola, and candy pieces in it.

Do you like it? I've been looking at some recipes. I really want to try this. I hate plain water.

When I was a teen, I was addicted to Coke. My Grandma cured me by refusing to buy it. She would only buy diet, caffeine free if she bought it at all. I loathed that crap so I found something else to drink.
DH is addicted to soda in general. He's allowed 1 can per day. Yep, allowed. Because he's not strong enough to resist the siren call of soda yet whines about his addiction.

I really liked this movie because it wasn't about removing personal responsibility. It was all about the government should be encouraging big corporations to give us all the information we need to make the best informed choices we possibly can. Believe it or not a LOT of people really aren't that smart when it comes to nutrition.

And doctors don't have to take any nutrition classes so they are basically no help.
DH's brother is a certified nutritionist. He got his masters in nutrition. He is passionate about portion sizes as well as sugar. I figured I could probably only conquer one thing at a time so I am working on sugar first. But my BIL will be the first to say, don't make too many changes at once because you won't stick to them. Change one habit, then another.

You're right MM. Small steps. I think the movie was also good as it stressed that some things really are an addiction. Like drinking a lot of sugar makes you want more.
I'm going to start off by trying to give up the soda. I am going to make a batch of blackberry sage water tonight.

I could use some help on portion sizes. I know what they're supposed to be and sometimes I care. Today I don't care and, quite frankly, I want a huge bowl of pasta with meatballs followed by a huge slice of chocolate cake. Won't happen because that stuff isn't in the kitchen (except the meatballs) and I'm not going out but I want comfort food and that's comfort food to me.
My biggest downfall is not eating at appropriate times. I get sick if I eat too early and often don't get all that hungry during the day. It's hard for me to eat anything because I'm not feeling any hunger cues. One of my doctors wants me to eat a small breakfast (she suggested eggs and bacon) but I don't see the point in eating just to throw it up. It doesn't help that I'm one of those people who can look at a shake and gain 10 pounds.

Eggs and bacon is not a small breakfast to me. A small breakfast is a bagel and maybe a banana. Eggs and bacon is a huge breakfast for me.
Portion sizes is a struggle for my DH. I know your meat should only be the size of a deck of cards. That's really small compared to what some people are used to.
I am not a fan of breakfast either. I get nauseous eating it, but if I do, it starts my metabolism rolling faster and I am hungry at appropriate times. I was like you, I didn't eat breakfast so my body thought I was starving. So it slowed down my metabolism, and then I wasn't hungry during the day. It was a vicious cycle. It sounds counter intuitive but eating breakfast helps me get hungry. Lol

Ginger is really good in infused water too.
I took a class called create your weight. It was all about thinking about what and how much you eat. I'll look for the book and post the title.
So this has sparked me to try to give up soda. I'm not doing this cold turkey but I'm going to start making infused water. Anyone do this?
I gave up diet coke over a month ago. I drink naturally flavored seltzer instead. No artificial sweeteners, sugars, or chemicals. Sometimes I squeeze the juice from a wedge of a citrus fruit into it. Best tasting drink ever!

Yeah, that jumped out at me too.
Yeah most studies are flawed and articles written that represent non facts as fact. I don't give credence to any of these types of articles.
Weight gain is due to not any one factor; rather its a whole life style issues. Calories are indeed a factor, amount of fat consume and sugars and carbs are all factors. exercise and general activity throughout the day are factors. No one needs a study to know this. We all know this. We just have to make better choices.

First, parents are running around with constant snacks for kids. God forbid you drive 15 min somewhere without handing them a bowl of cheerios to nosh on. Why? I was a bit of rebel there. If the trip was under 2 hours and they had eaten, WHY do they need to snack in the car? They don't. What happened to meal times and not constant grazing and snacking?
Second, corn syrup. It is literally in everything. Move away from it. Go back to yummy, plain old sugar. I would rather kids eat my desserts and cookies with sugar, real butter, flour and eggs and real vanilla, than all the crap substitutes. Oh, and BTW, if something say "Low Fat", it simply means they replaced the fat with more syrup, sugars or sweeteners!
Third, Carb - o - rama. Let's face it. Doritos, chips, goldfish crackers, teddy grahams, whatever are the Go to snacks because what could be simpler?
And, finally, fourth, let your kids feel pangs of HUNGER. I know, that is hard for a mom or grandparent to do. But how do they learn real hunger pangs from "oh I want a cookie now and that sounds good pangs"? There are times my kids have been too lazy to get up for breakfast. Sorry, this isn't a restaurant. Like yesterday, we had to get up and get some work done, and they hadn't gotten up yet, even though I yelled for them and had told them the night before. So, when they got up, I got them in my car and off we went to do our work and they didn't eat till noon. You are hungry? Well, tough taters, i told you to be up and ready at such and such time and that included being dressed and fed.

A bagel and a banana is triple the calories of an egg and two pieces of bacon. And it would be only carbs vs protein and fat. Eggs and bacon is actually better for you to eat for breakfast.
I like to eat an egg and a piece of fruit or some oatmeal for breakfast.

It was all about the government should be encouraging big corporations to give us all the information we need to make the best informed choices we possibly can. Believe it or not a LOT of people really aren't that smart when it comes to nutrition.
I studied nutrition in college and I have continued to study it ever since. I was sent to a nutritionist twice, once when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and again after the boys were born when my blood sugar had not yet (after 6 weeks) balanced out. (I required more time and it completely went away within a year). Anyway, they didn't tell me anything I didn't know, but the real kicker was when nutritionist #2 recommended I eat those vitalicious muffins for breakfast. I was like, WTF? Recommending a processed chocolate muffin for my breakfast? She had a whole display of "nutritious" cookies & candies by this company, I felt like she was in their pocket or an owner of the company pushing her goods.
I really think we make things way too complicated. The closer it is to the way God originally made it, the better it is for you. For instance an apple is good for you. Turning that apple into a applesauce and adding sugar or further down the line into a pie, not so much. The more processed, the further away it is from how it was made originally. A piece of meat that is grilled or broiled, obviously better than coating it with something and then putting it in the deep fryer. Eat more veggies and fruit. Eat protein, meat, eggs, nuts. And, then eat some carbs but don't overdo the carbs. And, soda pop is a dessert not a beverage, that is what I have taught my kids.

True about the calories I am sure, but it's the fat/protein in the eggs and bacon I could not tolerate. Eggs and bacon is way more filling and I could never eat an egg and 2 pieces of bacon for breakfast - it's too much. I wouldn't be able to get it down. When I eat a bagel, I eat only one part of it. So half a bagel I guess is the way I eat a bagel. And I can barely get that down. Sometimes, if I am really starving or if I have been up for awhile I can eat a piece of fruit in addition to the bagel. But to eat eggs and bacon for breakfast, that's just way too rich and too filling for me. It's a "big breakfast" for me.
