I really liked this movie because it wasn't about removing personal responsibility. It was all about the government should be encouraging big corporations to give us all the information we need to make the best informed choices we possibly can. Believe it or not a LOT of people really aren't that smart when it comes to nutrition.

I studied nutrition in college and I have continued to study it ever since.  I was sent to a nutritionist twice, once when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and again after the boys were born when my blood sugar had not yet (after 6 weeks) balanced out.  (I required more time and it completely went away within a year).  Anyway, they didn't tell me anything I didn't know, but the real kicker was when nutritionist #2 recommended I eat those vitalicious muffins for breakfast.  I was like, WTF?  Recommending a processed chocolate muffin for my breakfast?  She had a whole display of "nutritious" cookies & candies by this company, I felt like she was in their pocket or an owner of the company pushing her goods.

OMG this is what the movie was trying to get at!  Regardless of the "facts" or whatever everyone knows and understands that obesity is a bigger problem today than it was ten years ago.  The whole point of the movie was exactly what you and gaga are saying.  If it is premade/processed it's going to be full of crap!  And they want big companies to be more responsible to the consumer about what they are pumping out.  Like you said above and gaga said if it go back to the way god made it then that way is the best way to eat it.  In fact, that is what the final scene was about.  They followed four kids in the movie and every one of the kids were really really active kids.  One kid had lap band and gained it back.  One girl dieted and gained it back.  I don't remember what the third boy did.  The last boy's family made eating changes by tossing the processed crap and cooking from scratch and eating more natural foods.  They showed them preparing meals now by cutting up fresh veggies.  He was the only one that kept the weight off.

The movie points out that for two decades every study in this country showed how dangerous smoking was.  But the tobacco companies lobbied hard to keep their product on the forefront of society.  They donated to politicians.  They pushed.  They did studies.  But at some point the country wised up and started being more responsible about smoking.  Sure we still have cigarettes.  People can smoke as much as they want.  No one is saying they have to stop.  But the risks are made very clear.  The speakers in this movie want companies to make the hidden sugars more obvious.  To make the dangers more obvious.  Go look on any food label.  All the nutrients have percentages of daily value in your diet.  Sugar doesn't.  Companies don't want you to be clear on just how much sugar you are consuming.  We will always have the option of consuming whatever we want.  And we SHOULD have that option.  But we should also have more information from these companies on just how bad their products are for us.  And yes, sometimes it IS hidden just how bad they are.  There are many "healthy" items that are not good for you.

Thanks!  I'm going to try it and see.  I found a recipe for watermelon mint and watermelon rosemary so I'm going to try those too.  I love watermelon.

I do,  I wouldn't put to much mint in but it gives the water a fresh flavor.  I had it at a spa I went to

And there is a lot of conflicting info out there. It's hard to know who to trust. I just googled breakfast options and a bagel was given a grade of B+ and eggs and bacon were both given F- yet a nutritionist told chef to eat eggs and bacon. Hard to know who to believe !

It wasn't a nutritionist that told me that. It was my neurologist.

Meh.  I don't feel I need to believe any of them.  To me, it seems pretty commonsense.  If I eat a bagel for breakfast, that is fine but then for lunch I might have a salad and no bread instead of a sandwich.  I modify and monitor it myself.  I don't need some "expert".

Maybe you don't because you are educated in those matters. But if someone isnt educated and is trying to find help and information, it can be terribly confusing to know what information to trust.

One of the healthiest ways to eat is only to shop the perimeter of the store. That's usually the fresh produce, meats, and dairy.

This.  A lot of people are trying to read labels and do it on their own.  But labels can be very misleading.

The thing about bacon is a serving size is maybe 2 slices, not half the package.

So, I tried my hand at infused water. I used blackberry sage for the first try. My report? I failed miserably. Not a little bit. I mean it totally sucked. Let me repeat. It wasn't a small mess up. It was a mess up of epic proportions. Here's where I went wrong. There are no recipes in these things. It just says lemons or limes or this or that. Not four lemons or three limes. So I got two packages of blackberries and threw in a sprig of sage. Um, no. TOO MUCH SAGE. Probably half a leaf would have been better. It was overwhelmingly sage. The kids said it tasted like barf. So I added more blackberries. Yeah, that was a no go. Still tasted just like sage. So I ended up tossing the whole thing.

Moving on. Today I did a raspberry lime mix. OMG it was good. I used two limes and a package of raspberries. It's refreshing. With no heat I guzzled a huge cup right off the bat. I need to let it infuse overnight though. They said you get better results when you do that. But so far so good.

I'm going to experiment with different fruits and herbs. You'll get my report!

That sounds delicious. I may need to look into that !

I bought the mini cans today in my effort to reduce my Coke intake. It's a small step but I am addicted and I don't think I can go cold turkey. It's a huge step down from my old habit of a few cans a day.

I had two cans today. Down a lot. I really like the raspberry lime combo. I have watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruits, limes, and lemons to turn into flavored water.

Ugh.  I HATE sage.  And, yes, a little goes a LONG way.  I used too much one time for my Thanksgiving stuffing or something and it was unedible.  Just stick to fruits for infused water.  You don't need all that fancy stuff.  Put a pitcher of water in the fridge and toss in some lemon slices.  Tastes great and easy peasy.

Good for you! I have had just one mini can. I have been drinking unsweetened iced tea. Zero sugar and zero calories. It's not as good as water but better than soda.

They had infused water at the hotel we stayed at in FL last year. The boys liked the watermelon mint. I prefer just plain or with lemon.

That's the point.  It doesn't have a taste.  It's yucky.  I'd much rather have a soda.  So now I'm trying an alternative.

Exactly. I am trying to not be too hard on myself and also trying to change small things. Taking my 3-4 can habit down to 1 mini can is huge. Tonight at dinner I had a cheeseburger, no bun. Then when DD got dessert and wanted to split it with me, instead of splitting it, I had 2 bites and that was all. It was SO sweet, I couldn't take another bite. So I wasn't perfect by any means, but I did far better than I normally do. Tomorrow, it will be even easier.

Well, I have not had a Pepsi yet today. I was going to have one, still may, but I'm still drinking water. I know, weird. I'm just enjoying it. Our dinner was tasty. I had a sweet tooth afterwards so the yogurt was a nice touch.

Well, I don't know why I could say no. I usually love my Pepsi. I really liked the infusion water though. It's light and not sweet but you don't feel like you're guzzling water. And it turns pretty colors too! I bought an infusion pitcher. That makes it a lot easier. DS wants watermelon mint water tomorrow.

I am amazed to report that I am almost completely off soda. Yesterday I took a few sips and put it down. I was going through a two liter bottle a day. Now it takes me more than a week to go through a two liter bottle. I think I'm going to switch to the little bitty cans. I'm just not drinking it anymore and it loses its' fizz by the time I do. I've been drinking the infusion water completely.

Good for you! That is amazing progress! I am so impressed!

I am still at one mini can a day. I had a sip of DD's fountain drink today at dinner and it was SO sweet I could barely swallow it. I am def starting to notice a difference. The last two days I have not been as careful about what I ate, but tonight I did better and I have recommitted to doing better tomorrow. One day at a time right?!

One day at a time! I'm working on the soda issue first. I always swore I would never buy a soda stream but they had one on clearance so I bought it to mix with my infusion water. I tried it tonight with a citrus blend. Orange, lemon, lime. We'll see how it goes. The blackberry sage was a fail. The raspberry lime was awesome. The watermelon mint was really good too. Especially when you got a taste of the mint. So now I'm into the citrus. We'll see how this one turns out! I'm getting creative!

That's how I feel too, let me start with the soda and master that. Then I will move on. The soda thing is too big of an addiction for me. Now that I am down to a mini can a day, I feel much better about my habit. It's controllable now.

Yeah. I know there's other things I need to master in my diet. This has been a huge thing. I've always given up soda and then replaced it with something I didn't like. It never worked.

Once you get into your mind that soda is a dessert, it becomes easier I think. I view a can of pop like I view a slice of cheesecake. A nice indulgence but not a beverage. It's OK to have a can of it from time to time and savor it.

When you stop savoring a particular treat, it is time to back away from it.  Treats are special and be savored.  Potato chips are a treat, but if you are sitting on the sofa watching TV and mindlessly snacking on the chips, it's time to put them away.

I have made changes to my diet this year. I wish to improve my lab numbers. Seemed to work, as my last visit with my MD showed. She was impressed. With my changes, I went cold turkey, as I always do. I think my having much willpower also has helped.  I started taking fish oil, which dropped my numbers significantly. I also started taking a product called Bioastin, and I am able to do PT five times a week without muscular pain or strain. It has helped my joint health and fitness in general overall.

While I am not overweight like many, there is always room for improvement. I gave up drinking soda in April. I am not much of a sweet drinker or eater, so it was extremely easy to just stop. I do not crave it either. Once I awhile I will enjoy ice cream in moderation.  A quart of mint chocolate chip from B-R lasts me 3-4 days. I allow myself 1 Cinnabon cinnamon roll a year, at the holidays. A bag of chips will last me 5-6 days. I consciously practice mindful eating as well.

Of course, having a very limited food budget helps me stay on track by only buying essentials, and not splurging on snack items. While I do the best I can on a food budget of $60.00 to $80.00 a month, I do wish I was able to afford more nutritious foods, but I do try my best. (And no, I do not qualify for assistance. And no, the state food bank here is only for those on government assistance, and no, I did not ask for anyone's assistance or guidance.  I am just sharing my thoughts and experiences on this topic, that is all, thanks smile).

I am in a lot better health now than I was earlier in the year, however. While my MD feels I should gain more weight, that is not an option for me financially, and she hears that loud and clear. My blood sugar issues are managed by eating a snack when I need to. It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough to raise my levels so I am not shaky, sweaty or nauseated.

I would recommend to start with small changes. With every goal accomplished, it will be easier to accomplish more when successes keep adding up. I wish everyone who is on their journey to make positive changes much success and inspiration.
