For the first time EVER.....

I walked out of a restaurant without leaving even a penny for a tip.  I have never before left less than 15% even for bad service, but this was just crazy.   It was THAT bad.

We went to Applebees tonight after the movie.  It actually wasn't our first choice, but Chile's had to close because of a blown fuse that shut down their kitchen ventilation system and filled the restaurant with smoke.  But, I digress.

First, when we got there, a FEW other people from Chile's also went there, but it wasn't a rush by a long shot.  We got there about 8:15.  We got seated about 8:25 - the poor host had to go clean some tables b/c no one else was doing it.  We sat and ordered everything immediately - we already knew what we wanted.  The girls were sitting at the table behind us - 4 adults at one table, 4 kids at the other.  We got our drinks - but it took another 10 minutes for the kids to get theirs.  Then the fun began.   We waited over 30 minutes for chips and salsa.  At the one hour mark, our salads and appetizers hit the table, BUT we couldn't eat them because we didn't have any silverware or plates.  We asked for both.  Finally, my friend got up and walked to a couple empty tables to grab some silverware.  We asked to speak to a manager - our waitress sent over another waitress to talk to us - everything was all about the kitchen being backed up.  The kitchen being backed up has nothing to do with the failure to bring and refill drinks and bring silverware, but whatever.  Tables around us were getting up and leaving - they got tired of waiting.  Dirty tables around us stayed that way while people at the door waited to be seated, and waitresses did NOTHING.  They were standing in a corner laughing while customers were getting up and leaving.

When we had ordered the food, the waitress told one of the girls they were out of white rice, so she ordered something else.  She also told my friend they were out of new potatoes to go with his steak, so he ordered mashed potatoes.  When the food finally came out after an hour and a half - 2 of the dinners didn't get delivered.  When we asked about them, my friends steak came out with the new potatoes they were out of over an hour before, the girl got white rice, and at THIS point, the waitress tells my other friend they don't have the mexi-rice to go with her meal.  My DH had ordered the same thing - he had mexi-rice.  She just cancelled her meal at this point because everyone else had their food and hers wasn't even plated, obviously.

During all of this, we had asked for the manager at least 3 times and he didn't appear.  I finally told the waitress I was pretty sure the manager was a myth, but FINALLY he came out after 2 hours.  He looked like such a beaten man.  He apologized so profusely and comped our entire meals when we didn't even ask him to.  We told him he didn't have to do that - and he insisted.  He said they were very short-staffed in the kitchen and he was trying to cover that.  We asked about being told they were out of things they obviously weren't and he said he couldn't understand the white rice thing - they had plenty all night, but the new potatoes, he was like "you have been here a really long time.  I personally cooked up a new batch when we ran out, and they take an hour to cook."

At this point, I was actually feeling sorry for him.  I told him flat out that even though his troubles in the back end could be explained by being short staffed, that his front end had not helped the situation at all.  They didn't set the tables, bring silverware even when asked, didn't check drinks for refills, and left dirty tables and bus boy bins on tables all around us.  They were constantly doing nothing but wandering around or standing around chatting.

So, he comped the meal and normally, I would still tip the waitress, but really, I thought she had made the situation so much worse than it had to be and she didn't even seem to care.

So, I finally know what it would take to not tip.

I don't blame you. The manager had no control of the restaurant.

That sounds pretty crappy. The manager should have sent some of the waitstaff in to expedite. That would have helped a bit.

Yep. The least the waitstaff could have done was get busy cleaning tables instead of sitting around talking. I've been at places that were really busy before and they would bring out chips and salsa on the house to tide you over. Even little gestures make you feel like they're doing something.

I would have walked out instead of waiting.

Cannot understand why the wait staff were not cleaning tables, etc. I worked in restaurants for a few years and although the wages were crap and tips so-so I still took pride in my work and wanted to do the best I could. But, from what I hear and read lately, things have really changed....

Had they been swamped earlier? (Fathers' Day) Your experience is one reason why we NEVER NEVER EVER go out to eat on: Valentine's Day, Easter, Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day, etc. unless it is one of our favorites, and they take (and HONOR) reservations.

I think a lot of people dump on waitstaff these days and have been for awhile.  I think it's a build up of resentment that's been brewing so now some waitstaff feel it's legitimate to act crappy.  No, I don't agree with that.  Just thinking this is an explanation.

That's the result of poor training, poor management and poor support for the managers.

Have you noticed a marked decline with this particular place?

I've seen it. Usually means the owners just don't care anymore.

We wouldn't have tipped either.

Now, had the server explained what was going on and was attentive to things within his/her control, the story would be different.

You know, the more I think about it, corporate would want to know about this. You should go online, let them know your experience.

I know we got a lot of things accomplished in the store when the big bosses got wind of things.

We had terrible table service the last time we went to our Applebee's. I know a lot of people who complain about them. I think the only reason they don't go out of business is because of the bar.

I've had that same scenario play out at Chile's! Got up after 1/2 hour and walked out. I would not have stayed as long as you did. You have patience.

I have vowed on more than one occasion to never return. I've given them more chances since we don't have a lot of sit down restaurants here and they always fail.

We were already on our 2nd restaurant.  It was too late to go somewhere else.  We kept our humor, though.  When that plate came out with potatoes on it, we all started cracking up. It was so bad, it was comical.

Honestly, the manager looked so beaten down, and so apologetic, we felt sorry for him.

Who knows?  That could explain being backed up in the kitchen - but it does not explain a waitstaff that does nothing while things need to be done.

I would have left. I don't have that kind of patience. Our Applebees closed years ago. The last time we went to Chili's the service was almost that bad. It was like we weren't assigned to any wait person. We waited close to a half hour before anyone noticed we were just sitting there. I think they are trying to make it sort of self serve with those kiosk things on the table where you can place your order & pay. I don't like that.

I don't think either one are exactly cuisine. The last time I ate at an Applebees, I pulled two bugs out of my salad. They offered to give me another. I declined, my appetite was ruined. They still had it on my bill, I had to ask for it to be comped. They didn't want to comp it because "they offered to give me another salad". Pretty typical of their food and their service in my experience.

The food at Applebee's is pretty blah.

The service is blah as well.

The cost is ridiculous for what you get.

Our Waffle Houses are clean, friendly, the food is made fresh right out in the open and the cost is reasonable.

No. It isn't 5 stars. But it's good food without the pretentiousness.

I haven't been to Applebee's in years. We used to have one by where I worked and I would get to go food to take with me for the night shift. They were always messing up my order so I quit going. DH won't go to either Applebee's or Chili's. He won't go to a place with a bar. His ex SD worked at the Applebee's here and told the manager to fvck off. I have no idea what those restaurants are like. We either go to IHOP or our favorite steak place.

I like Applebees food - which is why I go back. But, it's getting ridiculous at this specific location. Luckily - we have another one nearby.

I like waffle house. It is always clean, fast and good.

I'm waiting for one to be built up here in this little area. That and a Walmart and I won't have to leave the 2 mile radius around my home for anything.

I think a little of both.  It's just so familiar it's kind of like a trigger.  He would drink at one place till he got kicked out and then go to another and drink till he got kicked and so on.  There were certain places he hung out at a lot.  He doesn't go to those places.  Applebee's and Chili's were two of them.  Our favorite steakhouse has a bar and that doesn't seem to bother him because he never hung out there.  He's been sober for ten years so I don't make a big deal of it.  We don't go out to eat often anyway.  I think the only thing that bothers me sometimes is that he won't eat anything that's made with alcohol even if the alcohol is cooked out.  The flavor is still there.  I got him to try fondue one time and he immediately put it down.

When I used to be a cook I hated working at places where the customer could see me cook. There would always be people who would approach and tell you exactly how they wanted their food done in a micro managing way, or "correct" you if you aren't doing it the way they would do it.

I just had to resist the urge to tell them if they want it done their way to pull their hair back and come do it themselves!

I would not have resisted.  But I would have added a "bless your heart" to soften the blow.  "Bless your heart, honey, why did you come pay for me to cook your food when you could so obviously have done it better at home yourself???!!!"

Yes it is good of him.  I'm proud of him being sober.  I know it's not easy.  I usually substitute coke in all the recipes that ask for beer like chili and stuff.  Works just the same.  Some things we just don't do.  I've heard stories of him being drunk and hear he's quite the bastard.

We had the worst waitress at waffle house once. She was so crabby it was funny. DD and I were giggling behind our menus like little school girls. She was working alone and completely overwhelmed. Finally someone else showed up and she calmed down a bit. She was tipped nicely.

The worst waiter I ever had was at Bob Evans. I placed my order for breakfast & it comes with choice of biscuit, toast or English muffin. I ordered an English muffin. The waiter asked which I wanted so I repeated English muffin. He asked me again which I wanted so again I repeated English muffin. Then he YELLED at me do you want toast, biscuit or English muffin. I looked at my SO & he said she has told you 3 times she wants the English muffin. He wrote it down & stalked off. No apology or anything. When he brought our food he just sort of plopped it on the table & sulked away. It was really weird. He got a tip but probably only the minimum 10%.

Waffle House after prom is a tradition around here. Has been forever.

And after concerts, bar hopping, late movies.

It's the place to chill and relax with your friends.
