I have no idea. But I think it's rude to paint all people with the same broad brush. Flan and I agree on same sex marriage and abortion. But we disagree on a LOT of other topics. Yet we are both consisterly painted with the same broad liberal brush.

 It's easier that way.

You're right, you don't. Just don't complain when you get lumped in with the liberal majority.

I don't. I can give you the example of immigration. I am very conservative on immigration. I dont think they should be allowed to have "anchor babies" here and I think anyone here illegally should be deported as soon as we determine they are here illegally. If you have committed a crime and are here illegally, then after you serve your prison sentence, I think you should get sent back to your home country and given to law enforcement only. No release into the "wild" so to speak.

Then I think maybe your mistake is labeling yourself a liberal.  Just like the liberals like to turn symbols of pride into symbols of hate - the term liberals is now about crazy left wing big government socialists.

I don't think I ever have labelled myself as such. But others here do label me as such ALL the time. You can't dump everyone with a few similar views into the same bucket and call it a day.

Well, there are some issues decidely more "liberal" than others.  When people consider issues of abortion, gay rights, and welfare a more compelling reason to vote for someone than education, immigration and the economy - then they have their priorities extremely skewed, and are very liberal.

I am liberal on some topics such as same sex marriage & conservative on economics & immigration. So I guess I'd be considered a moderate. My bff swears I'm Libertarian since I am anti government in people's every day lives. I generally don't care for labels & putting individuals in boxes.

As far as I'm concerned - if you voted for Obama, that is enough to label you a liberal. He had absolutely no qualification to be President and he has done nothing but divide this country even further. People who care about individual rights and are anti-government would not vote Democrat EVER in this day and age.

Yup.  If you keep supporting Dems and socialistic policies, you are a liberal.  Duh.  Own it.

Nobody in my circle of friends would dream of voting for Obama. My extremely liberal aunt & cousin both did both times. My cousin moved from Seattle to DC to help with the first campaign. What can I do, they're family? The rest of us just shake our heads & wonder what happened to them.

Well now if we could just get a like minded candidate we might stand a fighting chance. I think there are a lot of people who think like us. Just no viable candidate to elect.

Perhaps if those that think like you actually voted those idiots OUT, they would start to get a clue.  But that would require you to vote Republican.

No third party has been elected to the Presidency in ages - throwing away your vote is not going to send that strong a message.

I can tell you this. In the next primary, I'm voting democrat so that I can vote against Hillary - I don't care who the other person on the ticket is (unless it's Nancy Pelosi). ANY Republican would be better than her.

I did that with Obama the first time.  I voted in the democrat primary for him because of Hillary.  As dangerous as he is (and has been), she will be (and is) so much worse...

Oh, and I just found this quote, from no other than Obama himself. (you know, the guy that was against gay marriage until gay marriage helped his campaign???)

“Where the confederate flag still flies, we have built a powerful coalition of African Americans and white Americans.”

Plus, NO ONE is seriously talking about "banning" the "Confederate flag" (which it's NOT really the Confederate Flag they are talking about--the Confederate Flag that is popularly displayed is either the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, or the Confederate Navy Jack, but I digress) as it is displayed by individuals. Individuals still have the right to fly whatever flag they want to (except some homeowner's associations don't want people flying the U.S. Flag).

The issue is governmental displays of such flags--and I don't think it's unfair that they be taken down. The Southerners can cry all they want to, but:

A. no matter what they say, such flags are associated with slavery and racism. That is a FACT. While individuals can support such things to their heart's content, state governments should not.

and

B. They fvcking lost.

If you want to fly a flag, how about flying this one?

That I could never support--although individual businesses are free to do as they like.

However, the issue I had on this thread was that flan was NOT saying she was supportive of banning this movie and it's an ENTIRELY different issue from the flag "thing".

It's like this. Are books such as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn inherently "racist" in and of themselves, or are they a reflection of the time period they were written in and about?

To say they are the former completely IGNORES the fact that overt racism was alive and well in the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

You can't erase history simply by pretending it does not exist.

The flag "thing" on the other hand is different. It's not a "history", it is a symbol. Of course it existed--but much of what it represented should not be part of state governments. The history may not be erased--but the legacy of that history should be changed.

Roger Ebert rolling in his gave. Funny.

Margaret Mitchell maybe.

George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the founding fathers, all those soldiers, absolutely.
