Truly, I doubt if there is much you can do. Sure, healthier snacks, limit portions when you can--but when he goes back to his mom's house, he'll fall back into his old patterns, anyway.

You can only do what you can do. This kid is going to have a hard life.

Yes, he will have a hard life.  But at least WE can give him some tools for later on.  His sister doesn't even have that.

oh yeah.  You are the best chance the kid has, no doubt.

We try not to judge but of course we do.  Just not in front of him or when he can hear.  I can't remember if it was Easter or Halloween but we picked him up a week later and he said he was so happy to see us because he hadn't had a vegetable in a week.  He said every time he told them he was hungry they told him to go eat candy.  Candy is great but not when you're really hungry.  All we can do is show him there's another way to eat besides what he is learning at his house.  And I don't think that's all that hard.  I mean different houses have different rules.  Kids adapt quickly.  I remember the rules at my grandparents being different than the ones at home.  I had no problem adjusting.  So when he says "At my house..."  We just simply say, "We don't do it that way here."

I think you are going to have to try hard to control portion sizes--and how often he eats.

I think eating is a "comfort" for him more than he is "hungry".

He won't like it, but I think you need to put your foot down.

Also, getting him more active somehow would help. If he was active and interested in something besides eating, or doing activities that he can do WHILE he eats such as watching TV or playing video games--that would be good, obviously. Again, though, he may not like it.

You are a hundred percent right though it pains me to say it! He can literally eat more than my DH who can pack away a lot. Last night I just told him no at dinnertime. I could see in his face he was kind of hurt but I wasn't mean about it. He had had plenty. They eat TONS of fast food at their house and I think that also has a lot to do with it. We don't eat out that often.

I wish I could convince DH of the importance of getting him active. He loves to read and spends all his time with his nose in a book. That's not a bad thing but he never wants to go outside. Probably almost a year ago a really really nice couple with six kids moved in three doors down. Two of the boys are his age. One a year older and one a year younger. Plus the girls are always out there playing too. They're really nice well behaved kids. I know the parents and feel comfortable sending him down to play but he rarely wants to go out.

UPDATE: SS wanted to watch the movie Fed Up last night. I let him. At first he got a little bit upset because he said he knew he was fat. I encouraged him to watch the rest of the movie. Surprisingly enough he watched it and got all excited. At the end of the movie they challenge you to do a ten day challenge without processed sugar. He wants to do it. I told him when his dad gets home we can all give it a try!

I would try it now but I hardly have him for ten straight days. DH is being really supportive of all this. So we'll try it for ten days!

Thanks FNW! He's funny. I've been spending half an hour on the elliptical every day. It really helps my knees. He'll see me put on the workout clothes and ask me, "You going to workout?" I tell him yes. After I workout he comes up to me and gives me a hug and says, "You did a really good job!" lol
