"I don't get why you're upset about the Confederate flag. It's not racist."

This phrase, a phrase that I have heard too often since the tragic Charleston, South Carolina massacre a few weeks ago, is one masked by hate.

To many of my white friends, the concept of why the confederate flag is offensive to me mystifies them beyond measure. This concept confuses them because they misunderstand the Confederate flag's association with slavery, segregation and suffering. This concept confuses them because they are too immersed within their white privilege to understand why it acerbates me and those like me.

Although some of my friends may feel an undeniable attachment to the flag and its "southern pride," it sickens me that my friends refuse to be aware of how that very same flag makes me feel inferior, unwanted and dehumanized.

This is how a young black boy may feel when he encounters a Confederate flag.

I completed my undergraduate education at Miami University in Ohio, a university where only a mere three percent of the student population is black and the majority of the students' families, most of whom are white, make over $100,000 annually. In other words, I was a demographic loner.

What do you do when you're a loner of any sort? Make new friends! At Miami University, the best way to make new friends was by joining a fraternity, considering that more than a third of the student population was greek. The recruitment process, or "rush," as some may call it, can be tedious. Each potential recruit strolls into various fraternity houses, mingles with the guys and, if it all goes well, gets a bid to join.

Being one of the only black faces prancing down the frosted roads of frat row, I had a slightly different experience. I went from house to house as happily as can be, like a child trick-or-treating. If only I knew the real treat in store for me that day.

I had finally arrived at the house that I wanted to join the most. I was shuffled from room to room to give my canned speech to my (hopefully) new brothers. Each room was bigger than the last, and filled with better conversation -- that is, until the final one.

My eyes widened, my mouth dropped and my body felt paralyzed by the massive star-studded red, white and blue flag. This wasn't the type of flag you pledged allegiance to in elementary school; it was the type of flag from which any young black boy in modern day America would run and never look back.

"Oh, it's not what it seems! Our fraternity was founded in the south. We want to show our pride!"

It's not what it seems?!?! This is what it seemed like to me: It seemed to me that no one in that fraternity was black. It seemed to me that no one in the fraternity minded that they were a part of a white-only fraternity. And, it seemed to me that the Confederate flag was put there to keep it that way.

Immediately, I felt embarrassed. I felt degraded. I felt unwelcome. I felt stupid. I felt dirty. I felt unequal. I felt violated. I felt like a n*gger.

On that cold winter night, going to college was my biggest accomplishment to date. I was the first in my family to go to college, not because of my ancestors' lack of effort, but because of the burden this flag's symbolism placed upon their backs, a burden that this flag had now put upon my shoulders, a burden I had hoped I would never have to carry.

I carried that burden out of that house and into my dorm. I carried that burden as I walked across my university's stage at graduation, and I carry that burden today. Whenever I see a Confederate flag, those same sickening emotions overwhelm me and, once again, I feel exactly how that flag is meant to me me feel -- like nothing.

So, I ask my white friends: Is there any equivalent symbol in this world from which your white privilege does not shield you? Would you ever want your child to feel how I felt? Would you ever want your friend to feel how I felt? Would you ever want me to feel how I felt?

Do you dare carry the burden of black Americans? Do you dare to not only stand beside us, but stand up for us when we demand the South Carolina state capitol and others alike to "take down that flag"?

I dare you.

Your Friend,

Brandon

I am really getting sick of people inferring what someone else thinks. You don't know what someone else thinks. And, if you want to spend your life presuming everyone "hates" you, then have it.

That attitude is becoming some sort of badge to wear for some people.

Yes. If you do X, then that means you think Y. Um, no, it doesn't mean anything. Maybe it means you enjoyed Gone With the Wind. But, eventually we are going to be a nation of tribes. You must think this way, look this way, act this way or you cannot be liked or accepted. Who is the hater? I HATE you if you like that flag. Uh huh.

He's saying that he felt like I would feel coming into a room with a big Nazi flag on the wall, and people who were / are proud of it.

To him it's about dehumanization, slavery, mass murder and hate. And being proud of it.

Me too with the Nazi flag.

I keep hearing that it's about "Southern Pride." Pride in what, exactly? Slavery? Cotton crops grown and harvested by slaves?

Tobacco crops that kill?

What does that flag represent that you're actually proud of?

If the confederate battle flag had gone up in state houses as the official state flag in 1866, then I can see the point. But those confederate flags were incorporated or used straight out at state flags starting up in the mid 50's and early 60's as a battle cry, not about slavery, but about desegregation. If you are proud of that heritage, good going Jim Crow.

I see pride, I'm proud to be a southern girl. Proud of my heritage. Proud of what my family has survived, accomplish and become from the first settlers to now.

There were no slaves owned by my family. My civil war relatives fought for freedom from government interference. Something we need to do today. They wanted to keep what they worked so hard for and was willing to die for it.

So you ask what I am proud of? What is the pride I feel?

It's knowing that when there was a choice to be made, they chose to die for their freedom. For my freedom.

Now if any of ya'll or anyone at all has a problem with that, you can stick it where the sun don't shine. I don't care.

I am a proud Georgia girl. Proud southern girl.

Well the question was asked. I answered.

As for others. I don't really care. I don't understand the pride people have in a lot of things they have, do or say.

See? It's that pesky freedom thing again.

As a woman, my female ancestors were discriminated against. I don't run around crying about that. There are no black people that were slaves. Quit being an ass over something that happened before your great great great father was even born...

Not a single black person alive today were actually slaves.

No. Don't forget that time in history. But my God, move on already.

The ones about my age, for sure your kids age and younger, are growing up in a world with all the same freedoms or lack there of. It's on them now. The individual.

The "man" ain't holdin them down anymore.

So what exactly is the problem? I'm not seeing one.

All I am seeing is a lot of victim cards.

You would be hard pressed to find an Indian that wants that to happen. The Indians aren't calling for it. White liberals are. They don't support it.

First, you need to double check your sources before trying to quote them.

Second, it wasn't the Native Americans that started that.

ohfour said it and you agreed.

From an article in the Washington Post:

Two of the three judges found there was enough evidence to determine it was, writing in their decision that based on the membership of the National Congress of American Indians, which has long fought to change the name, “at a minimum, approximately thirty percent of Native Americans found the term to be offensive” during the relevant time frame.

Let's just rewrite all of history to make people feel better about themselves. eyeroll The flag is part of history. I don't think it should be flown on any state or federal building. Just like I believe the gay flag should not be flown on any state or federal building. But I also have no issue with the confederate flag.

The idea that we should get rid of something just because someone's feelings got hurt is ridiculous. If the jerk that shot up the Charleston Church was posed with the American flag, would there be calls for the banning of that flag? What if he had posed with a bottle of booze? A dog? A teddy bear? We have to ban something because a killer posed with it? Absurd.

Newsflash: That jerk would've shot up the Church anyway regardless of what symbols/objects he posed with, wore, whatever. He had it in his mind to kill and he accomplished that.

As to the article in the OP: Grow a thicker skin. Life hurts. I get that. But, the world doesn't exist to pat your back and give you kudos. Sometimes you will see something you don't like. Sometimes you will take it personally. But, the answer is to realize that whatever it is isn't personal and use that realization to grow as a person. That flag was probably hanging in that fraternity long before you walked in that room and will probably hang there long after you leave that University.

White privilege? Really? White people are not exempt from racism. You just don't hear about it.

 Examples?

flan

 Affirmative Action

UNCF

There are many but those two spring to mind.

Absurd.

No kidding chef.

What if he had gay flag?

Just as plausible.

Can you imagine the uproar?

Side 1: Ban the gay flag!

Side 2: But we LIKE it!

Side 1: But it's offensive!

Side 2: But it's part of our heritage!

Oh wait ...

Thanks, Lily.

Also, the article in the OP. So, just because you're black, I must hate you because I like the Confederate flag and am white? Really? If you were Indian, would I still hate you? What about if you were French? Japanese? How about not bringing my skin color into your world of hate? Better yet, what about the black people who don't give a rip about the Confederate flag? Do they hate you too? Or does the hating you only apply if the Confederate flag liker is white?

Personally, I refuse to buy into the idea of racism, sexism, whatever. Succeed on your own merit or don't. If a person is qualified for a job, it should not matter what race they are.
