A newlywed bride was killed less than a week after her wedding day when she was hit by a lightning bolt while hiking on a Colorado mountain with her new husband of just six days.

Kathleen Bartlett, 31, was killed instantly when the lightning strike hit her on Mount Yale on July 17.

Her husband, 32-year-old Ryan Pocius, was also hit but he was eventually flown to the hospital in stable condition and released from the hospital two days later after receiving treatment.

The newlyweds were hiking Mount Yale on July 17 in Colorado days after being married on July 11 in Denver

Bartlett was the first lightning fatality in Colorado in 2015 and the 21st in the state since 2005

The couple had just been married on July 11 at the Denver Botanic Gardens, ABC 7 reported.

The bolt hit the couple when they were at 12,400 feet

Two separate hikers were also hit by the strike but only suffered minor injuries and were well enough to 'self-evacuate', according to the Denver Post

The bolt hit the couple when they were at 12,400 feet and witnesses had to hike down to notify emergency crews because there was no cell service at that altitude.

Bartlett was the first lightning fatality in Colorado in 2015 and the 21st in the state since 2005.

Friend Deborah Young said: 'She was just so in love and so grateful and just so happy.

'The pain he must be feeling, I can't even imagine.'

Pocius and Bartlett met 'one rainy afternoon' while she was working part-time as a ****tail waitress and they were both 'avoiding the pursuit of a relationship' according to their wedding website.

'Turns out, we ended up having more things in common than we first thought, including a shared appreciation for kids' movies, yoga, sarcasm and love for the outdoors.

'It became apparent very quickly that we had both found 'our person'.

'Six months after we started dating seriously, we found ourselves engaged and the rest is history!'

Isn't it ironic? Doncha think? A little tooooooo ironic?

Still, quite sad for them both. But more proof that exercise is dangerous to one's health.

Looking at the pics, I bet she crocheted those hats and scarves. She just seems so happy. Very sad.

I can't imagine that family's pain. The poor husband. I can't imagine having my spouse ripped away from me so soon.
