Evidently, some states DO teach abstinence-only. It fails.

Everything's bigger in Texas: One of the most interesting and notable examples of this phenomenon comes out of Texas, which, according to ThinkProgess, has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the country and a track record of strict abstinence-only education. Even with declining birth rates nationwide, the Lone Star state has lagged behind, but that didn't stop them from doubling down their efforts on something that was already not working.

Last year, Texas reportedly spent $1.2 million on a website aggressively preaching abstinence-only education, omitting any mention of contraception.

That's simply not true. I have family in Texas. Their kids are taught sex education with am EMPHASIS on abstinence.

Texas Geeks, wanna chime in?

Texas is a big state. It is likely to have some very conservative communities, but that would hardly speak for ALL of Texas.

Actually, the state with the highest teen pregnancy rate is New Mexico, then Mississippi, then Texas and Arkansas tie.

Texas is a big state. Another thing to keep in mind is that we are something like six times larger than some of the east coast states. All this means is that per capita we are going to have a significantly higher amount of people in our state. More people=more teens. So it's natural that our average is higher. As far as Texas goes it's a very conservative state. Austin and "Went End" in Dallas are the liberal portions of our state. They are very high in the gay population. Before anyone jumps on me I'm just trying to say that even though we do have some liberal areas they tend to cluster together in tight segments. Most of Texas is very conservative.

The state of Texas is lying to me? Why would they do that?

www.dshs.state.tx.us/abstain/

Then there's this.

A West Texas high school is considering expanding its sex-education program beyond teaching abstinence after 20 cases of chlamydia were confirmed among students this week.

"We do have an abstinence curriculum, and that evidently ain't working," Jim Rumage, superintendent for the Crane Independent School District, told KFOR-TV about the outbreak at Crane High School.

Ha ha, when people are cold they want to have someone warm them up.

IMHO, people who think they can get teenagers to NOT have sex, by telling them not to, are damn fools.

Or liars.

Or people who WANT more teen pregnancies.

Why would people that live there lie? Some districts may teach that, some may not. It varies from district to district, school to school. You don't seen to understand how curriculum works here ...

I didn't say TX didn't have more cases of sex. But if you have a state with 250,000 teens and another with one million teens it's misleading to say Oh, one has a higher rate of teen pregnancy.

It's a teen pregnancy RATE. That means the number of pregnancies PER THOUSAND teenagers. The total teen population will affect the total NUMBER of pregnancies, but not the RATE.

Does Texas have districts that teach both "Abstinence only" AND teach "Creation Science" instead of "Evolution"?

On the subject of college. I know a lot here will hate me for saying this but I think it's a good thing. Most people used to leave high school and go directly to college. They'd be out in four years. And though they may not have had a super high paying job they usually had a decent one with insurance. Until somehow our economy hit the chits. Now a lot of kids are going to school part time and working part time because college is so expensive. And not everyone wants to go into debt to get a degree. And in today's society you can get a degree and it doesn't even promise you a job with insurance anymore.

I will add that if you are living in mom and dads basement and working at Burger King you probably need to adjust your life. I'm talking about young people who are actively and strongly working toward a goal.

Fighting? I'm not fighting. Merely clearing up a misconception. If you're going to talk about pregnancy rates and statistics, you have to understand how they work. It's not the total number of people.
If you want to consider that "fighting", well, I can't stop you.

First, I don't care about any of this. I raise my kids how I see fit and no one gets a say in that. Second, ed just likes to tell stories of young girls having sex. Like LL said, none of what he wrote was even relevant. Three, I'm not fighting with anyone. Again, I don't care about this thread or anyone's values about this subject. So I'm not about to get into a pissing match over "statistics". Four, any statistician will tell you that you can make statistics do whatever you want. Five, all you've done since you've come to this board is to argue with people and tell everyone how closed minded they are. I'm really not sure why you even want to be here since just about every post you make is to argue. I prefer not to argue. So have at it. You can argue with everyone else.

This didn't make a lick of sense. I'm not the only one who pointed it out. I'm sorry you feel everyone has to agree with you, otherwise they're fighting with you. Do you want people to agree with you unconditionally, even if you're wronger than wrong? I'll keep it in mind.

Where did I say everyone had to agree with me? I never asked that anyone on this board just love on me unconditionally. I don't really give two rat's asses if you think I'm wrong or right. I took two statistics classes and the first thing they taught me was that statistics can be manipulated.

You aren't even on here to address real subject or address real questions. You just make personal attacks like you just did and deflect from the real issue. Have fun arguing.

Mon Dieu! Pointing out that you're wrong about rates and statistics is a personal attack? Again, rates aren't measured by how many people in a state. They're measured by the number per 1,000, or 10,000 or 100,000 people.

If you want to consider it a personal attack...well, that's on you. But you'd be wrong.

Curious, "Per Capita" means "per person".

Every state has exactly ONE person per capital.
