Again. She is ridiculous for not wanting to work.

HOWEVER

She did pay for the first 3 years out of that money.

She didn't frivolously spend the whole 90k.

Regardless, her parents clearly don't value the lesson of hard work or they would not have waited until her senior year of college to tell her to get a job!

Lily - read the article. It says she is a senior in college with no work history. That's exactly what the article says. Clearly her parents didn't care to make her earn her own money.

Yep, she did good paying most of her tuition.  They only issue is being a brat over the rest of her tuition.  Having to borrow 20K will not break the bank.

To me, it's the refusal to consider a job that really makes her sound terrible.  Her money would have went a lot further if she'd had jobs along the way to pay for the fun stuff and kept the money for college only.

 Yep. Working never hurt anyone.

And if her parents had thought that, they would not have waited until her senior year of college to tell her to get a job!

You don't know what they told her prior to this.

There are lots of college seniors with no work history.

And she had 90k. She didn't see the point in working.

But it doesn't mean her parents never said "get a job".

I wonder where she got money in high school for all the stuff girls buy? If she didn't have a job then the money was coming from somewhere. From grand parents? Parents. Who bought all the clothes, purses, and make up? Trips to Starbucks, the movies, and dinner with friends? Who paid for all this?

Exactly. It was either the parents who paid for it or the grandparents. Either way, the parents are responsible.

Even if she didn't have any actual work history, she should have some sort of reference. Volunteer work, babysitting, etc. DD doesn't have a job at a company, but she has done work for several people who would be more than happy to be a reference for her. She has cleaned, babysat, and volunteered. Where has this girl been? And as a senior, she should have been doing internships in college. One of those internships should be able to be a reference for her. Doesn't sound like she has done any though. "No work history" doesn't sound like she has been working in her field at internships.  And if she thinks she is going to find a job by calling people on the phone...she has another thing coming. She doesn't even know how to look for a job.

I guess that's what my line of thought was.  Having raised a high school girl they are always asking for "a couple bucks" for this or that.  It adds up quickly.  I don't know many kids these days that don't do at least some form of part time work.  I've heard of parents, but never experienced them, that don't want their kids to work during high school because they want them to focus solely on their grades.  And if that is the case that's fine but they're now left with the legacy of their choices.

The first mistake was the grandparents actually letting the girl access the college fund. No no no!

The grandparents should have maintained total control of the money, in their account, and written a check each time the semester bill was due.

Of course she is an entitled brat, and her behavior is abominable.

But handing over a huge sum of money like that to a young person is not wise.

 Yep!

If you have generous relatives, these kids can rake in a lot of money.  Obviously if grams left her $90K, then she had money and no doubt she was given money all throughout her childhood.

Well, I didn't have a job in High School.  There wasn't any fast food type jobs in my area.  And, babysitting was simply not for me.  I did it once and hated it.  However, I did do my part in doing well in school and what my parents asked me to do.  So, I really don't care all that much if my kids get a job or not in High School.

Right?! So if the family is generous and gives her money, make her put it in the bank. Teach her to save it. Show her that saving for a long term goal is important. If her extended family is that generous, then the parents needed to be active in teaching her the importance of how to save and use that money.

Exactly!  I understand if the parents don't want her to work during high school.  I get that.  Some parents want their kids to focus on school.  But you can still teach a child about money even if they don't earn it.  They should have given her an allowance and made her learn about spending and saving.

I can understand not wanting your child to have a job in high school. You should at least do some volunteer work in order to have some sort of work experience beyond school. But in college, you need to be out in the work force starting to create a name for yourself and getting your self established. You need to work at internships in order to be able to create a resume and to have some sort of work experience.
