I am husband and child free today.  I have absolutely NOTHING on the agenda.  Tonight one of my favorite shows starts back up again.  Tonight I will be holed up, alone, with a drink, and maybe some popcorn.  Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Nice NJN! Getting ready to hit to road. Trying to beat the morning rush. I forgot to gas up so I'm hoping to make it past the Palm Beaches before I need to stop.
Have a good day all!

Congratulations on both LL. Once you get used to it maybe you won't feel sad, only happy. It is tough to realize they're growing up.

Have a fun Friday, NJN!

Safe travels, SB!

Hi Lindley and Tiny and everyone.

I'm heading to Denton with Paul, to finish packing up his apartment.

He and his friend Victor went apartment hunting yesterday. I'm not sure if they found one they liked. He's not up yet.

Oh well, I'd better wake the kid up, and get to it.

I'm a mess because G is a mess. He gets to tell 50 people that they are losing their jobs. People that are our friends. It's going to be a rough day for him...

And them.

Wow, your kids start back to school early! Mine don't start until after Labor Day, which is a week later than usual.

Enjoy your evening, NJN!

Sorry about G's job, Ohfour. Be ready for ****tails when he gets home.

Safe travels, FWM and SB.

The tree guys are cleaning up the mess of pines all over the backyard. Hopefully they'll get it all cleared by Monday when the landscapers arrive. It's weird walking in my backyard and actually seeing sky.

Morning everyone.

FNW our county for the first time in history is starting back before Labor Day since it is so late this year.

Oh4, I am so sorry for G. That sucks. And the 50 people he has to let go.

I'm actually kind of glad they aren't going back so soon, except they will probably end up going longer in June which I don't like. I want them to have a fun, long summer. It goes by too quickly.

I was shocked when I heard but since I don't have kids it doesn't really affect me one way or the other. My niece is in Fauquier & I'm not sure what they are doing.

Hey yall.

Aw, LL, I know what you mean. I think I was more worried when my kids started middle school than when they started kindergarten.

We go back a week from today. About to go get Jesse's schedule. Aaron got his on infinite campus but Jesse's isn't active for some reason.

O4, it's never easy is it?

Brother and his kids should be here between 6 and 9 tonight.

I have some girl time scheduled with my best friend tomorrow. All the kids are going to the aquarium and zoo with their grandma and dad and brother have things to do. So she and I are going to find something on Netflix and gossip. May get some take out.

Hi, Lexxy, Lindley (who is still enjoying the grand's), TD, NJN and FWM!!

I am trying to salvage two cast iron skillets. HELP!!!

That is going to be hard, Oh4.

I feel bad for G.

We got Paul's stuff back from Denton.

We'll have to go back one day next week and clean the joint.

His roommate stayed there this summer, and left the place a filthy mess.

I told Paul to text him, and find out what day he can come up and help us.

I'm not cleaning up after that swine!furious

Have a fun night NJN! Enjoy it!

Baby J is in Kindergarten??! That is NOT possible. Were they excited to start their new schools?

Lindley that is so sweet, I am glad you are enjoying them!

You need to get the rust off with sandpaper and then season it again. You should be able to find instructions on Google or pinterest.

Depends on how much rust is there.  We usually do a salt scrub or use some steel wool.  Then we season first with the slow, low oven way.  Then we cook a pound of bacon in it.

We have about 15 pieces of cast iron from 3" skillets to a 15" skillet to a dutch oven and a griddle that we use occasionally on the grill.  We have about three pieces that we use on an almostdaily basis.

Beautiful, sunny summer day with lower humidity - finally!

Ohfour, that sucks for your DH and his coworkers. DH has been doing that slowly with his team since his company is consolidating to 25% of what they had at the beginning of this year by next year. Being in IT, he knows who is getting laid off the week before most managers or employees know. He hates it.

FWM, hope all goes well with Paul's move and next place.

SB, safe travels home.

NJN, enjoy a day of nothing.

Lindley, love hearing the G-babies stories

lily, enjoy girl time

Schools here don't start until after Labor Day. It was a big stink a few years ago when they tried to start the week before. Problem is we are close enough to the Jersey Shore that a lot of kids work the summers down there at the boardwalk. And the shore does not end the daily summer season until Labor Day.

Today was a busy day for me. 8:00 Dermatologist follow up appt. Was a little early and was out of there before 8:00. I have never had a doctors appointment where I was leaving before the starting appointment time. And she is good and thorough. We do have a game plan for the hives and welts but it is a slow process. I'd rather it take longer than it come back.

Stopped at MILs before dropping in on where internship will be starting on 9/1. Contact person does not come in until 10:00. Okay, ran a few errands in that town then off to next appointment.

10:30 appointment with transfer adviser at CHC to get more info on their combined Bachelors/Masters program for Human Services and to also inquire about a possible duel Masters in Counseling Psychology (I think I am a little insane to be considering this). BA/MA can probably be done in about 2 years in an Adult Accelerated program.

Dropped back in at internship site and confirmed that I will be there 9/1 and she said they are ready for me. Glad I am not there now as the AC system is still down.

Went back to MILs to take her shopping at the Korean/Asian grocery store. Her first time, my second at this location, She was a bit overwhelmed. We got lunch there, YUM, (interesting because we had no idea what most of the food was) and also stopped at the Paris Baguette bakery, YUM YUM.

Got home this afternoon and have been trying to cool off a little and catch up on the boards. And I still need to write an essay about transference and counter-transference. And make stuffed shells and meatballs for dinner.

Thanks for all the advice. I did google cleaning of cast iron skillets. Luckily, there is not a smidgeon of rust on the ones I found.

The interior is clean, it's the outside that needs gunk removal. Steel wool and numerous soakings have helped a lot. They both look much better.

I will let them soak a bit more to get the last of the gunk off the exterior and then I will re-season. Mom said I was lucky to find them in such good condition and rust free.

We found a small skillet, a large skillet and a griddle. I'm in cast iron heaven! I have always wanted a set and here was a set put away in MIL's stuff in the basement.

I wonder what else we will find.. gosh, we still have a lot of stuff to go through.

O4, how much notice are the employees given? Will the company provide any sort of job seeking help? Sometimes big companies will and contact other companies in the area.

They have been given 8 months. If they stay, they will get a retention bonus equal to 25% of their yearly salary. Then they get 2 weeks severance for each year of employment. Plus 6 months of paid insurance premiums. Plus a year of job placement services...paid.

My company has them well taken care of. But some have been there over 20 years.

Its just hard, even with the MORE than generous package. Everyone is taking it well...everyone but the bosses......it was just a hard day...

I'm so sorry this has happened within your company. I feel bad for everyone there.

ETA: The company does offer a nice severance package.

I never understood the draw to cast iron. I had several, only to toss them as they always looked dirty and gunky. Stuff would stick to it, too, when cooking. I'm sure I was doing something wrong since everyone seems to love them.

You may not have seasoned them correctly.  But I agree.  Ceramic all the way baby!

DH cares for the cast iron here.  It is always cleaned after every use.  Yes, sometimes stuff sticks.  For me, eggs stick almost every time except for when I fry them.  I still add an oil even though they are seasoned well.  DH seasons them regularly to keep them in excellent condition.  At least two of our pans are over 100 years old.  We inherited them.  Only two are less than 20 years old.

I've gotten rid of all my stainless pans (not the pots) and several non-stick pans have been replaced at least twice.  My cast iron will never be replaced.

You know what? I am beat. I have two movies on flashback, Grumpy Old Men and National Lampoon's vaca. I am going to just couch surf. Beat but loving it. Already did a power walk with the dog, chatted it up with neighbors and such. Just going to nap and sleep!

My mom had cast iron when I was little.  I didn't like it then but I know it cooked well.  Not long ago I bought a cast iron cornbread pan.  The first time I used it DH raved about my cornbread.  Since then I have added more pieces.  Even though cast iron can be a pain I still love it.
