Cute. The USA is the most litigious country on earth. FACT!  If you want to call that disdain for America, be my guest. However, if one of your regular American members said the exact same thing, you'd let it go.

Hahaha...Nice try. I've watched you say some pretty bad things about America. I'm sorry being  a Canadian has you so worried about being the second best it  gets your panties in a twist. When you grow up to be a real adult country you let me know ok...lol

ROTFLMAO!! Ooh, burn!! You've wounded me to my core. How WILL I sleep at night?

Not sure. Maybe on a blow up mattress at your American cousins house. I love my country and I am insulted by your attitude. When Canada has to take on the whole worlds problems you come back and tell me about it, ok...lol

Cute. Now, which bad things would those be?  Care to point them out? I do have a problem with right-wing Republicans. I think they're nuts.

(Just like you all have a problem with liberals. Does that mean you hate America?)

I'm not going to bother finding all of the digs you've had against America. I'm sure you'd love it if every time I talked about Canada I said something derogatory or made sweeping generalizations about every Canadian citizen. You act like you think you're better than us Americans but I know too many lovely Canadians to judge them all by your sour ways.

So I should just give any information they or any agency asks for?

No. I don't think so.

The school system asks all kinds of questions that is none of their business. Household size, income, medical and family questions.

Why do schools need to know anything other than name, grade and classes and an emergency contact?

I realize the OP  is about a college, and they need different information.

But, in general,  a lot of their statistic filling questions are not needed. It's simply compiling information.

OMG! You take potshots at the USA all the time! The words "Canada" rarely come out of anyone's mouth here. Nor, do we even know who care who your leaders are or what your laws are or how you run your country. Yet, you seem obsessed with the USA and bashing Repos every chance you get.

Socialist? Who is a socialist? Canada is not socialist.  Perhaps you should do some research on what the term "socialist" really means.

You think we don't have capitalism? You think we don't have private property or private businesses? You think the government owns all the means of production? You think we don't have capitalist billionaires?

Canada has some beautiful places. I'd like to visit and travel through it.

But I would not want to live there.

Government gets how much of you pay? Like 30% or more. Your kids are medically treated in the schools no matter how you might feel about it. You may be able to walk into any health care facility for treatment but you're going to wait for weeks for anything to really be done.

And that's just the beginning.

Then there is that whole smugness that tends to drip from Canadians.

So yeah. Canada is socialist. Social money, social medicine, social education, social everything.

All things considered, our taxes are comparable to yours.

"Wait for weeks for weeks for anything to get done?' Is that why my son walked into the hospital complaining of pain and had surgery the very same day?

If kids are below the age of consent, parents have to sign off on treatment.

You wouldn't want to live here? That's fine with me.

Taxes are not comparable. Your taxes are about 25% higher than ours. Do you have Provence taxes also? And I don't for one minute believe you about you son. We visit Canada a few times a year, G about 10 times a year, and we have some really good friends there. They tell a COMPLETELY different story. They love it there, for whatever reason, but tell a different story. I believe them.

Like a give a crap if you believe me. He walked into the ER c/o of pain at the base of his spine. They took one look and told him it's a growth and it's coming out TODAY.  He had to go to the CLSC for a month after that, every day, for cleaning and repacking the wound.

Here you go!

www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/0411/do-canadians-really-pay-more-taxes-than-americans.aspx

Don't forget to factor in the high health insurance premiums and deductibles you gift to the insurance companies.
Oh, and the astronomical costs of your higher education. My niece is a pediatric neurosurgeon. The cost of her medical degree at McGill was about $27,500. We don't have to take out second mortgages to send our kids to medical or law school.
We used to have your healthcare system. We like ours now. Any talk of dismantling it would result in riots that would make the storming of the Bastille look like a yoga class.

Yes.  And, it isn't static.  A country that starts out as capitalist then starts down the road of Socialism.  Europe has done it and so has Canada and the USA is marching toward that same cliff.

I really get tired of all the "Canada is Utopia and America Sucks" type sentiments. Not saying that I am seeing that here. However, I do see that type of thing a lot across the Internet. Yes, America has its' problems. But, so do they and so does every country.

Depends on which year we're talking about.  It took my five years to get a four year degree.  I started when I was 27 and had to take some remedial math classes to refresh my memory.  Those don't count toward your degree.  I also took typing and computer data entry because I knew I would need it to succeed in college.  None of that counted toward my degree either.  Anyone is free to apply for a pell grant.  If you meet the income requirements you can get a pell grant for each semester of college.  They will give you full or partial pell grants depending on your income.  My whole way through college I received the full amount.  When I started out I went to a junior college.  I did all my pre reques at the junior college.  It kept my costs down and my pell grant was able to mostly cover it.  I kept my grades at A-B level and after my first year in junior college was rewarded with several scholarships from private foundations and also one from the college for being on the deans list.  When I moved on to nursing school there was a private jobs place that would fund you if you met their requirements.  It had to be a two year program, you had to be accepted, all your pre reques had to be complete, and you had to go to class every day and have your attendance sheet signed off on by a teacher.  In conjunction with that I received funding from the United Way that paid for my day care.  Then, because I still stayed on the honor roll, I received a living stipend from a private organization.  It was basically a scholarship but they sent it to me so I could use it for living expenses in college.  Getting a college degree is very doable.  You just have to hunt out the sources.

What it comes down to is this. If you want an education you will work your ass off to get it. You will do anything in your power to make it happen including not accepting no for an answer. I'm pretty sure IKWTDS will agree with me on this. If you want it, you will find a way to make it happen. And you can do it without becoming poverty stricken in the meantime.

Grants are from the government and are given based on income. They are indeed free. Loans are not. Big difference between a grant and a loan. Scholarships are free and are generally given out by private groups, organizations, and/or individuals to help with schooling. They are also free. You do not have to pay them back. You can tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about but I know exactly what I'm talking about. I graduated from a university not owing a penny. I also didn't need to put out any money for school. I went to school for free. There are all kinds of programs and places that give free money. You just have to find it. Also, the better student you are the more money you will get. Obviously people don't want to give money to failing students.

Everywhere that I have lived in TX if you work for a company and decide you want a degree in that field they will pay for your tuition. I know all the hospitals do it. You do have to put your tuition down up front but they will reimburse you for it. As long as you are going into the medical field. I've heard of some other companies that do this too. Usually with this set up you have to agree to work for them for two years after getting your degree. But you're still not paying for your education.

I know of many scholarships that are available to different people for different reasons. Some you have to show proof of. If you have Native American blood in you and can prove it then you can get a scholarship for that. They award thousands every year. My DN is part Indian but won't go to the trouble to get the papers so she can't apply for it. I don't really think people realize how much free money is really out there.

Many organizations, individuals, and/or companies put money away to award to deserving people who are trying to get an education. For example, Target, Starbucks, and McDonald's take a portion of THEIR profits and put them into college funds for students. It IS free. It doesn't come from the government. It comes from companies who budget a part of their profit for that purpose. The student gets money they don't have to pay back and I believe it's a tax write off for them so they get something out of it too. It's a pretty simple concept actually.

Sure everything is paid for by SOMEONE, but grants and scholarships are free to the STUDENT.

Virtually everything is paid for by either taxpayers or by companies' customers. That doesn't have any relevance to this discussion.

Sure, and everything we eat comes from Sunshine. So what?

The scholarship I got for making Dean's List my first semester in college came from somewhere, and I didn't have to pay it back. Free to ME.

When it comes to the money the government spends with no regard - I'd much rather it be going to scholarships and grants than a lot of the other stuff it goes for.

Almost every big chain store I know has a scholarship for a college kid that works in their company. You are supporting that by buying things from them. Don't want to contribute? Don't ever eat out or grocery shop again. Your money goes to the cause of educating someone. Don't go t the hospital either. Part of what you pay goes to scholarships too.

I guess it would be much better if CEO's lined their wallets with extra profits instead of donating to good causes.

I don't have a bit of problem with any monies going to education.

It's the "free money" mentality.

Nothing is free.

On this thread we were talking about how a STUDENT could get a free education. We weren't talking about the world's economy. We were specifically talking about how a STUDENT could go to school free. So yes, it is FREE money to the student. The student doesn't have to give it back. Simple principle. Free to them. It's like ed said, everything we eat comes from sunshine. So what?
