Is it me, or is it a bit Dickensian in here? Debtor's prisons and indentured servitude, really?
Not that I have any answers to these complex problems. Sorry.
A bit. But child neglect is a crime. And failing to provide food, shelter and clothing for the children you create is neglect. Failing to pay child support is a crime - so why shouldn't they be punished for it?
And child abuse is a crime - and they should be punished for it. Right now, the main punishment is to lose your kids and then the system ends up paying for them - the parents should have to pay and they shouldn't be able to get out of paying by choosing not to work.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
We used to celebrate and expect the best from people. Now, we pat people on the head for their worst. Welfare robs a person of their personal dignity. It takes away the drive to be better. Now, nobody wants to be better. They want to sit on their behinds being comfortable. That isn't a very satisfying life is it? It is about taking pride and ownership in your own life. We have lost the sense of pride and accomplishment seeking Easy. Who wasn't proud of working crappy jobs to buy their first car? ANd, was your first car a luxury Rolls Royce? Of course not. But, you were very pleased and enjoyed that car probably more than you enjoyed anything. Why? Because you EARNED it. We have lost the notion of having to EARN anything.
My idea of welfare reform for the able-bodied (I saw where someone mentioned "what about the disabled?". I'm not talking about them) would be no more foodstamps/EBT. Instead give them something like a tastier version of Big Brother Slop. Handles their nutritional needs but doesn't exactly taste good.
