Your school operates differently than ours. Our cleaning crew and maintenance are all employees of the District and under the Supervision of our Director of Maintenance.

I have never been in a school who didn't sub contract that work out because of labor costs. All of the over 25 schools I have either attended or sent my kids to subcontracted that work out so the school district didnt have to pay benefits etc. The cleaning crews come in when school is over, and they the school around 3-4 hours later. That is not much time really. They typically get everything  swept, the bathrooms cleaned, the cafeteria cleaned, the trash in every room emptied, and that's about it. They don't have time to do anything else and they cannot stay later.

If your school does it that way, it should be super easy to have whatever you want deep cleaned. Just ask the cleaning crew to do it.

We actually just formed a "Wellness" committee at our school which I was asked to be part of. I think that would be a good fit for this committee to look in too.

I didn't know that all schools don't have a nurse present. I learned sometime last year that some schools only have one nurse per DISTRICT.

That's us.

No need for a full time nurse. I don't see the need for them at all really.

Well, there really IS a need if there are children who take medication or have other issues. Meds need to be kept in a safe place. But that's not the debate here.

The kids and the coaches need to be responsible. Period. We always have been.....

Ok you're right. Nothing anybody can do. If some kids get sick oh well. It is just not possible to make any changes whatsoever.

Schools' cleaning services don't deep clean anything other than the bathrooms. Classrooms get swept, hallways get swept, gyms get swept, etc. The cleaning isn't nearly what you would expect because it's been outsourced in most cases and the time spent on the job (labor costs) is the only thing that matters. The health of the kids isn't even a factor. I think it's hysterical that people think that the cleaners who come in at night have time to deep clean the wrestling mats! Lol. The kids' desks don't even get wiped off, why would the cleaners go into the gym and dig out equipment to clean?!

Have you ever taken a Clorox wipe and used it on a desk in a school? I have. The results are disgusting. The wipe was black with dirt and grime.

I don't think it is the regular cleaning staff's responsibility.  But the sports department should be making sure they get clean.

The stupidest thing is those mats could be sanitized by simply putting them out in the sun for a few hours on a hot day.

Correct. And when a child hits their head on the playground, the office worker or the parents who volunteer on the playground are the ones who evaluate your child for concussion symptoms - or not. Often they just send them back out to play.

There are kids who have seizures, who have serious allergies, who take powerful medications etc. Who do you want to administer those or evaluate those children? An office worker or parent who isn't trained or a medical professional?

DD fell on the playground and got a serious cut on her arm. The parents on playground duty cleaned it and put a few bandaids on it. When she got home it was still bleeding, it turns out she should have had stitches - probably over 20 of them. But because the parents didn't contact us it was too late to give her stitches. I would rather have had a school nurse on site making that decision than a few untrained but well meaning parents. I called the school and asked that the parents who supervise the playground at least take first aid training as it was plain to see DD needed stitches. The school said they don't get enough volunteers to even fill the schedule for the month let alone put more restrictions on who can volunteer.

Sorry, but staph is a risk with high school wrestling. They don't know where their kid got infected--it could well have been at another school, or by wrestling someone who had it. If it was truly from the mats at that school--then why is he the only one infected?

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

 He wasn't.  He's the 5th kid infected.

"In January, Rocky Point Schools Superintendent Michael F. Ring told parents in messages to the school community that there had been five cases reported. He said then that the infection "is quite common and it is possible that more cases will be identified." Most of the infections "aren't serious," he said at the time."
