Bunk! Maybe some employers discriminate based on names, but the better ones do not care about names, just skill and professionalism. 20 years ago I told my DS no tattoos or body piercing while living under my roof. I told him if he and someone with his same skills and experience applied for a job, the one without the visible tats and such would get the job. That was true then in a lot of industries then, but not today, not now since so many job applicants have tats and piercings. Cutesy names will be just like the tats and such, the more people that have them, the less of a factor they are.

Actually, my vote is that the "cutesy" names wither & die!

And I still think it depends on the profession.

It absolutely does depend on the profession. A graphic designer can get away with an cutesy name, a lawyer not as much. You want to trust your case to someone named Rainbow?

If Rainbow is a better lawyer then Brooke or Joan, then yes.

Look past the name and see the talent, please.

But you are assuming they know.  Most people don't know anything about lawyers.  And if they are looking them up cold, they are going to go to Elizabeth before they go to Rainbow.  They are going to go to William or Daniel before they go to Diesel.

This. Rainbow would have to have some damn good referrals, because if I needed a lawyer I would cold call a more familiar name.

We have a Quigley and a Dill listed in our phone book as lawyers. And, yes, they have great reputations. People talk to each other (around here) about who the best lawyer would be for them. That is what I go by, not a first name.

Who would be silly enough to call a lawyer cold?

Czech, I realize you live in a town of 20 people or so and everyone knows everyone, but really, that is not the norm.

It's definitely not the norm.  I've used a lawyer three times in my life.  Cold calls all three...

Even I cold call lawyers. I will look up names in that area, google a few and check to see if they have any bar complaints or peer ratings- but I'm still choosing which ones to check up on.

I needed a lawyer once. I talked to a lawyer I knew who did a different type of law than I needed & asked him who he would hire in my position. He recommended the best in the area. His first name was Blair. He did a good job. He also cost a fortune but cut me a bit of deal because of my friend.

I would never cold call a lawyer. I'd go by referral only.

Okay, which one of you Texans took her body, and what are you doing with it now?

(and have you hired a lawyer yet?)

And if you don't know anyone that knows someone in that area of practice?  How many people know a good elder lawyer?  A good consumer protection lawyer?

LL, around here a lawyer has to have a license for at least 2 states, so they do know each other over a very wide area.

Granted, we are not the big city, but we are not stupid.

Point taken.  I was only thinking defense attorney.

The lawyer friend has since retired but I have a lot of clients that are in various professional businesses.  I would certainly pick their brains before picking up the yellow pages.

And I KNOW a lot of lawyers, that doesn't mean I'd recommend them all. People would be better off cold-calling.

I would, and have, cold called. Most lawyers will give a free consultation.

We live very close to the state lines. Omaha is the same way. Most lawyers have multi-state licenses for that reason.

I would trust the advice of a lawyer I know over a cold call any day of the week. That is only my personal opinion.

I have three lawyer cousins, one has an unusual name. He is young and new, but he has already started making a reputation for being thorough and fair, and he is constantly busy.
He mostly does real estate stuff, wills, things like that.
