A New Jersey student waiting tables over the summer to put herself through college got an unwelcome surprise while serving a large group last week.
On Aug. 17, Jess Jones waited on a table eight diners at D’Jais Bar & Grill, a restaurant and dance venue in Belmar. Though Jones says she told the large party the kitchen was running slower than usual, at the end of the meal she received a surprising note on the receipt, reports USA Today.
Instead of leaving any tip on the $112.03 bill, the party left the commonly used acronym “LOL”—short for “laughing out loud”—and added “1 hour for food.” Jones took to Facebook the next day, posting a picture of the receipt while explaining that the “joke” isn’t funny to servers who rely on tips.
"Last night, I was stunned by this receipt that was left for me by a party of eight people," Jones wrote online. "I would have preferred a '$0' tip than a 'LOL' tip, but as a waitress, bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job. Even though they did wait an hour to eat, they remained satisfied with filled drinks and proper notice that the kitchen was a bit busier than normal. I've worked in the service industry for five years and I take pride in providing great service to my customers."
Jones wrote that, as a server in New Jersey, she earns $2.50 an hour—according to Department of Labor statistics, the minimum wages for tipped employees can legally be as low at $2.13 an hour. Non-tipped workers must earn at least $8.38 an hour.
Jones continued, "Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make. I need tips to pay my bills. All waiters do. We spend an hour or more of our time befriending you, making you laugh, getting to know you, and making your dining experience the best it can be. We work hard, and we really do care."
Over the weekend, the post went viral. Some sided with Jones, others acknowledged that tips are not mandatory-- but many argued for higher hourly wages for all workers.
On Friday, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty acknowledged the issue, posting his own response on his Facebook page:
"If you visit Belmar please treat the hardworking men and women in our service industry with the same respect you would expect at your job. This is ridiculous," Doherty wrote.
Jones called the experience “cruel and unnecessary,” although acknowledged such guest behavior is “not uncommon.”
“Please be good to your waiters. I know it's annoying when things aren't right. I know how aggravating it is to receive a hefty bill when all night you've been wondering why the table that came in after you was served before you. But waiters are mere messengers most of the time, and it's wrong to shoot them, however bad the news."

Well, that sucks and yes, there are people like that. However, I thought gratuities were usually automatically added to large parties? But, yeah, if you get stiffed too much, get a different job for sure.
Yeah, how bad was the service from HER? I've been to restaurants where the kitchen was so backed up it took over an hour to get the food, but the waitstaff was awesome so were tipped well.

She told them ahead of time that the kitchen was running behind. If that was a problem they should have left & gone elsewhere instead of taking it out on the wait staff. I find it hard to believe all 8 people chose to stiff her. Based on 20% tip that is less than $3 for each diner. Seems really shytty to me.

I agree.
They could have gone somewhere else, when she told them the kitchen was running slow.

That was just plain mean.
This.
What a bunch of jerks.

I think it's horrible to take it out on the server like that, if she provided good service and the delay was not her fault. I just don't see the need for the server to go all passive aggressive about it.

I see it more as a wake up note for dead beat dinners, who use anything as an excuse not to tip. And there are a lot of those kind of people out there.
They make me disgusted. I have seen individuals (and groups) receive excellent service and just because they are in a pissy mood, they take it out on the server.
It is not right. You receive service, if you don't want to reward someone who provides good service, stay home. You (general) can be an arse all you want at home, nobody cares there.
And people wonder why Americans will not work in certain job areas. They freakin bring it on themselves!
No snark intended.

I generally question the motive behind making things like this public. It doesn't do anything but bring attention to the one posting.
And then I have to wonder what kind of person would be that eager to broadcast a perceived slight unless they are one of those perpetually offended people.

Oh and if the kitchen is an hour behind, the kitchen manager is not doing their jobs.

Tips are expected when YOU expect to have someone wait on you hand and foot.
If you don't want to tip, stay home.
This subject angers me. Sorry
I'm also sure you would be happy to work for $2.13 an hour.

I don't know about the rest of you but tips have been around my whole life time. I would not dream of stiffing a wait person. They earned my tip by bringing my food, refilling my drink, bringing me an extra napkin, etc. I am not a demanding diner but I have certain expectations that are almost always met.

We frequent a couple of great restaurants. When we walk in the server is already grabbing our drinks. They know they will be getting a good tip. One night another server tried to steal us from our regular waitress. That didn't end well. We said nothing but our regular server pushed her out. We thanked our regular. And I think she was double tipped!

I had a favorite waitress like that at a local Mexican place. She was the best. Sadly the restaurant closed earlier this summer. So sad. And yes we always tipped her really well.

I have worked for that.
Still.
Tips are not required.
Tips are given in gratitude for service received.
Apparently the service received was not worthy of a tip.

Really. It's not like tipping is new or some fad. You go out to eat, you tip, unless the SERVER is horrible. A slow kitchen is not the server's fault.

DN was a waitress for years. She said she hated waiting on really old people. We're talking fixed income here. They would come in, order the cheapest stuff they could, use coupons, and then if the bill came to something like $10.24 they would give her $10.25 and say keep the change. She busted her butt for these people. One restaurant he worked at had all you can eat cat fish night. She hated it. People ran her ragged with it and then rarely tipped. Waiters and waitresses work damn hard. If you don't want to leave a tip stay home. And I'm not talking about bad service. I'm talking about cheap ass people.

That is the custom there - not here. Here, servers depend on tips for their wage whether people like it or not. That's the way it is - so if you don't want to tip, don't eat at sit down restaurants.

I think that's the problem. Waiters depending on tips.
They should get minimum wage.
And I hated tip pooling.
Just give them minimum wage.

People have been saying that forever and it hasn't changed, and it likely isn't going to, so people just need to deal with the way it is and get over it.

In every situations there are three stories. Yours, theirs and the truth in the middle.
I'd like to see a response to the OP from the alleged offender.

That's not really true. They wrote "1 hour for food" right on the reciept. And LOL. It's really not funny. And if she deserved no tip - it would be even less funny.

Lily - they didn't write "crappy service" or anything else about the waitress. They wrote "1 hour for food". That's pretty clear. Just because you hate tipping doesn't mean that customers can't be jackasses and servers be innocent.

If the kitchen is that backed up and it was a problem for them they should have left. We have been in that situation and usually the restaurant will bring out chips and salsa or whatever for you to nibble on until the meal gets there. When we have had to wait we just socialize.

Who said I hate tipping?
I think wait staff should get paid at least minimum wage period.
Tips are not mandatory, no matter the situation.
And you don't know it didn't say "crap service"? It could have said anything.
One side of the story.
I remember waiding tables. It sucked.
I have zero problem tipping.
I really don't know what is with your back handed slams toward me lately. But it's getting old.

This happened to me the other day. Went out by myself with both kids to a restaurant that is know for really quick service, only to have it take over an hour for our food. Waiter never came back after bringing our drinks to when the food came. No refills, no explanation, nothing. As I was leaving the manager was telling another angry customer that they only had one cook. I left 15% instead of my usual 20+%. Not his fault that it took so long, but he could have let me know the situation or at least kept our drinks full while we were waiting.

Agreed. I want to know where the Manger was. Both the kitchen and floor managers.
Kitchen manager should be able to get a backed up kitchen under control again within minutes.
And the floor manager should have been giving comps.
An hour backup is beyond crazy. And unexcusable.

The latest trend I've noticed is they take my order, bring my food, refill my drink & then disappear. I mean never come back. We are done eating wanting to leave & they don't come back around with the check. It has happened at least half a dozen times recently. We take late lunch so it is past the rush. I'm beginning to wonder if 2:30 is official wait staff break time after the rush. It has happened at Chili's, Don Pablos & TGIF so it isn't just one particular restaurant. I find it annoying but have yet to dock tip for it.

My point is WE STILL TIP! The only reason we give a lesser tip is if it is directly the wait staffs issue. The kitchen being backed up, no. Once we ate out and the manager had seriously under scheduled, didn't have enough staff, or someone had called in. Again, that was not the issue of our waiter who was trying to do his best. You really do have to look at the WHOLE issue.

And for someone to say they were a waiter/waitress and then say someone didn't deserve a tip looks pretty bad. Especially if you have supreme knowledge of the food industry.
