So was I. I'm a nurse. I would have sympathy for a nurse who wrote how she had been mistreated. I wouldn't automatically assume she was "perfect" but I know how nurses generally get treated. It would just make it more believable and not less believable to me.

Only once did I decide a waitress didn't deserve a tip. (Maybe a kick in the seat instead?)
I was dating a young widow with a 2 1/2 y.o. daughter, they flew in to stay with me for a few days.
After I picked them up at the airport, we stopped at a nearby diner.
When the waitress came, I asked her to get us a grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of milk immediately for the girl. She left us with our menus for a few minutes, then came back and took the rest of our order.
Didn't see her for the next 35 minutes. (It wasn't crowded, it was about 3:30.)
No grilled cheese sandwich, no glass of milk.
The adults' meals came, nothing for the kid, who was amazingly well behaved, since she had to be starving.
I cut up some of my food really small, and gave it to her.
Later, she brought the grilled cheese sandwich, cold and wrapped up to take home. No milk.
I told her how distressed I was that the girl didn't get to eat and never did get the glass of milk.
She kindly took the milk off the check.
I was too young and ignorant to know I should have been complaining to the manager. (That's something my parents should have taught me, I think.)
I left her 10 pennies as a "tip", and complained on the way out.

I think a lot of it is how you treat others. DH and I went to IHOP one time. We love it there because it's usually not crowded and we can sit and talk. Our waitress introduced herself and told us she was brand new. She had only been there three days and was on her own. She was slow but she was nice. When she brought out our food she had brought out the wrong thing. DH had asked to bring toast instead of oatmeal. She brought the oatmeal. But she was nice about it. Gave us the oatmeal and brought toast too. When we left she wished us a Merry Christmas. DH told her he was going to give her a big tip for saying Merry Christmas and not Happy Holidays. It was pouring down rain when we left. We got in the car and the waitress started beating on the window. Turns out DH forgot the credit card. She was very nice to us but we treated her nicely too.

When I was a waitress there were 2 tables in one night that did not leave me a tip - and I deserved it. We were slammed, the kitchen was slow, and I was bringing out an entire tray of food after a very long wait. The person who loaded the tray did not balance it properly and I dropped the entire tray of food on one of my other tables. So one table did not get any food and one table got all of the food down their back. Absolutely worst night as a waitress ever.

Lily - they didn't write "crappy service" or anything else about the waitress. They wrote "1 hour for food". That's pretty clear. Just because you hate tipping doesn't mean that customers can't be jackasses and servers be innocent.
Who said I hate tipping?
I think wait staff should get paid at least minimum wage period.
Tips are not mandatory, no matter the situation.
And you don't know it didn't say "crap service"? It could have said anything.
One side of the story.
I remember waiding tables. It sucked.
I have zero problem tipping.
I really don't know what is with your back handed slams toward me lately. But it's getting old.
It said LOL...and then it said "1 hour for food". It didn't say anything about the service...
Based solely on the word complaining.
I'm not saying it was more than kitchen problems. Waitress could have been the most attentive server in the world.
What I am saying is she could also be leaving out certain information. Wouldn't be the first time.
Unless there is a link or picture that I am not seeing, there is no way of knowing if any other comments were left on the reciept.

And for someone to say they were a waiter/waitress and then say someone didn't deserve a tip looks pretty bad. Especially if you have supreme knowledge of the food industry.
Where the heck did I say that?
I swear. Ya'll sure like to make crap up.

IMO - some people look for excuses not to tip b/c they are cheap.
What the heck is your problem?

I would have tipped you just because you were having such a horrible night. I have never been a waitress & the scenario you described is exactly why. I had visions of spilling sizzling fajitas on the back of someone wearing a polyester shirt that then melted to their back causing third degree burns.
I spilled a milkshake in a cops lap while trying to set it down. I was mortified.
He was totally cool with it.
I worked at Steak n Shake. 3rd shift. I got all the drunks, late night ball teams, and night owls. I had 2 others under me.
50 tables split between us plus counter seating.
It got tough several times.
Worked at Po Folks, knock off of Cracker Barrel, 1pm to close.
Floor manager, had 12 under me.
I would completely support a law making minimum wage mandatory for wait staff.
I know how hard it can be.

Yes. It was wrong not to tip for the service preformed by the waitress.

I still maintain that tips are not mandatory. They are extra for the service provided. If it is mandatory, that's part of the charges.
That in no way means I hate tipping or look for reasons not to tip or that I am cheap.

No one would do that job for minimum wage.
If they don't turn in enough tips to reach minimum wage, that is all the employer is required to make up.
If the wait staff made 7.50 an hour, or whatever minimum is now, then tips would not be required to make up their pay.
Thint about it. Think about everyone you tip.
Waiters are the only ones not getting a fair wage from the jump.

I just can't get behind a waiter or waitress making minimum wage. That's not right. To make the argument to just pay them minimum wage and forget about tips... is weak. What? Say I'm a server at one of Michael Symon's or Tom Colicchio's restaurants. Minimum wage would be ridiculous. This is a serious business and servers that earned their right to even touch a plate at one of these establishments... that's special! lol. Oh and btw, you could have that same mindset as a waiter at Applebee's or TGIFridays. They give up their evenings, they give up their weekends. They work hard. Very hard. So no to this concept of just pay them minimum wage. ugh!

But think about it, what is the average now? 2.15 or something?
So basically, you are paying the balance of what the employer should be paying.
On top of very poor, next to nothing benefits, the employer isn't even providing minimum wage. The customer is.
And you can bet that kitchen workers are making better and they are not dependent on tips.
Do you in some restaurants, tips are pooled and split with every one working that night? Including those that are making minimum or better.
What I am trying to say, is pay a competitive wage.

Because if servers were paid more - the food would be much more expensive. Which would mean people wouldn't eat out as much, which would mean everyone suffers.

I agree that restaurant meals would be a little more expensive --- maybe.
But I don't think they would be a LOT more expensive, and I don't think a lot of people would cook more and eat out less.
Everything would quickly reach a new equilibrium.

So the ones that caused her to lose her tip should continue to be paid in full but the waitress should have to work harder to make up what she lost.
That makes sense because....?

Well, as someone who waitressed for years, I did it for immediate cash that was way more than minimum wage. I would not have done it for minimum wage or anything close to it. That work is hard and exhausting. For minimum wage, I'd have worked elsewhere doing just about anything else. So - no, you don't want servers making minimum wage, or even just over it b/c then you will just get the people that couldn't get jobs elsewhere.

There are lots of minimum wage jobs so nobody has to be a waitress if they don't want to Lilly. I will gladly tip wait staff. They are the few people on the planet who are worthy of tipping in my opinion. The rest of the tipping industry is out of control and just ridiculous. We were out of town mini golfing and we went to pay for our mini golf to the lady sitting at the counter. I used my CC and there was a line for a tip. I mean, really? I am going to tip you to take my money to play mini golf? Um, no. Absurd. However if you hustle all evening refilling my drinks, being pleasant, making sure we have enough bread, etc, then absolutely.

I agree. It's a hard, physically demanding, and often thankless job.
I hate when Starbucks put a tip jar up. Inside or in their drive through. You just made me coffee and stuck it out the window. Seriously? You're not getting a tip for that.

I've not tipped before--but the service has to be exceptionally bad.
We had a bad experience in London, once. The waiter mixed up our orders, asked us if we wanted garlic bread but never brought us any, never re-filled our drinks, and then took forever and a day when we wanted our ticket. There was more to it than that, but it was a VERY bad experience.

As for the minimum wage & no tips? Bad idea. Depending where you are working as a server you can make big bucks. I'm not talking about Denny's. My cousin worked at an expensive restaurant near the white house. On a good night he could bring in $1,000 in tips.

Yep. G's daughter worked a high end steakhouse in Memphis. On the weekends, she often brought in $750 - $1000 a night. Especially when there were big games in town.

Many places are doing it now for carryout orders.
Nope.

I don't tip for carry out either. If I have to get out of my car and come in and pay and get my food you are not getting a tip. End of story. And I have no idea why Starbucks does it. They don't even bring your coffee out to you. They yell out your name and you have to come up and get it.

When I went to nursing school there was only one other single mom. She lived not far from me. We were college buddies often car pooling and most of the time we studied together. She waitressed at Red Lobster. When she got out of school she got a nursing job. Then she quit because she was making more waitressing than she was as a nurse.

I was getting pizza a month or so ago and I started writing a tip in. The girl at the counter told me that they don't get the tips people put on credit or debit cards. She let me cross it out.
