Well, the Israeli visitors disagree with you both. And their opinion about it matters much more.
This is not about someone getting over a purse snatching or such. This is about a whole demographic nearly wiped out by being forced into a "shower". Anyone telling them to get over it, IMO is a jerk and insensitive. Flame suit on.

I knew you were going to agree with me. Anyone who has actually studied the holocaust in any detail would think this utterly assinine.

I have studied it in BEYOND detail. I'm willing to bet I've done more studying on it than anyone on this boad--by a LOT.

“You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I'll rise!” ― Maya Angelou
People are forgetting what "showers" meant. DH and I watched a movie with SS about the Holocaust. He's very interested in it. Well, in the movie there was this teenage girl and apparently when they started the showers she landed under about four people. So when she breathed she didn't breath in straight poison. Another thing people don't understand is that they made Jews clean out the "showers". So these Jews were cleaning out all the dead people and they happened upon this girl that was half dead and half alive. They rescued her but she was really sick due to the poison she had breathed in. It was a really sad movie.

I watched that movie, too. It was called The Grey Zone and had Mira Sorvino in it. It was a good movie and pretty realistic, I think.

Yep. The Grey Zone. I had forgotten the title till you said it. It really was pretty realistic. The Nazi's made the Jews actually bury the people they killed.

Highly doubt that. Not only is it a life long study and interest of mine, but I know people who were imprisoned there and other camps and have talked at length with them. This topic is my number 1 interest in life, after my kids of course.

The Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. tries, at least on a limited basis--to "mimic" some of the things of the Holocaust. They give you an I.D. card, the design of the museum is very stark, they try to impress on you the horrific conditions and crimes committed.
Nothing, of course, can emulate it--but at the same time, there are not many survivors left. We need to try to impress upon future generations the horrific nature of what happened.

Well given your previous statements on this thread, you have not learned well. You must be callous toward the topic.

That's an absurd statement. Just because I disagree with you on this does NOT mean I'm "callous".
I know full well the significance of the showers--I think we need to present the history in the starkest terms possible. Watering it down is NOT going to help future generations learn the lessons it holds.

But yet, greeting visitors with "showers" as a heat convenience seems like a good idea to you? Most of those visitors are survivors, children or grandchildren of the survivors who grew up with the stories, know the horror and you still think showers are a good idea. Man Husker, you need to explain that.

No, "most" of the visitors are NOT survivors--or related to any of them. That is not a true statement. Jewish visitors are by far a minority of those who visit--a significant minority--but a minority, nonetheless. The top countries for visitors last year were Poland, the U.K., the U.S., Italy, Germany, and then Israel, in that order. 70% of the visitors were young people--they don't define that, but safe to assume that group would not include survivors, or even children of most survivors who would be in at least their 40's, if not much older.
I'm not sure you are as well versed on the subject as you seem to think you are.
Beyond that, again, there are VERY FEW survivors even left. I'm much more concerned at this point about current and future generations "forgetting" what happened. Those who don't know history--are doomed to repeat it.

Done Husker. Advocating showers as a convenience at concentration camps is a total fail. Get over yourself.
No, it isn't. Many of the visitors, probably most, did not object. I would have rather they actually put them in the chambers and shut the doors for a few minutes. Make it voluntary, of course (which they are, anyway, so if people don't like them they don't have to use them).
If you want to whitewash the event and make it seem like just another footnote in history--be my guest. I DO NOT, VEHEMENTLY DO NOT, feel that is the way to go. Without knowing the horrors, future generations will soon forget.

I just looked at the pictures of the "showers". Good grief. They IN NO WAY resemble anything the Nazi's used. Much ado about nothing. They don't even leave them up all the time. They only have them out during very hot days.

Uh....no. Try honors courses throughout college for my history AND political science majors, plus as my independent study and senior thesis. So unless you have a master's degree on the subject, I think NOT.

Just the very IDEA of showers at the entrance to this camp is horrific. And those things? They are nothing like any of the "misters" I've seen in other tourist areas nor was that like a cooling station I've seen elsewhere. It was a thrown together contraption that looks like it could be part of the camp. It's horrid.

Master's degree--no. Pretty much the same set of courses--yes. Honors history and anthropology classes. Several independent study projects. Senior Anthro. thesis.

??? If you know ANYTHING about Nazis--you should know they NEVER "threw" anything together. It was all highly planned, organized, and well-constructed.
