Killing her because she was tossing urine? I don't recall living in a country where the Police are supposed to act as Judge, Jury, and Executioner? Or, is that the new Police State you wish to live in? Well, once they start slamming Christians to the ground and killing them, I bet your tune will change.
The police didn't look at each other and say "let's go kill the crazy lady".
Dramatic much?

So you think they went in with the intention to kill her?

The police are not supposed to do anything at all? Ever?
BTW, YOUR drama seems to start with the first post.
It's a valid question.
What do you think they should do?

Not sure what your point is. They DID in fact, Kill her.
My point is, you have the benefit of after the fact information.
They didnt.
Do you think they went into that cell to kill her or to restrain her?

Yes. And, they should act like TRAINED professionals knowing how to handle difficult situations and assess where the situation is heading and make adjustments so as not to KILL her. Duh. I am amazed that you want seem to want high standards for someone waiting a table but for the Police, who cares if they are trained. Who cares if they have traning whatsoever or know how to de escalate situations.
I see a situation in which the police were doing what they could to stop an inmate from throwing body fluids, creating a dangerous environment for everyone.
In the moment, they did what they were trained to do.
You don't like the way it ended. I understand that.
However, you have the precious benefit of hind sight.

Watching the coverage of 9/11. The dispatchers told people to stay where they were in those towers.
At the time, it was the right thing to do.
We now know, it was leaving them to die.
In the moment, a person does what they are trained to do. What they think should be done.
After, it becomes clear that maybe something different needs to be done in the future.
Saying what "should have" doesn't change what did.

You just proved my point. I can guarantee that their training does NOT say to taser someone 4 times in such a short amount of time. In fact, it probably says the exact opposite. Yet they ignored the training and did it anyway. And THATS why it's negligent.

Oh...one of the side effects of tasing is congnitive impairment. So that means the more they tased her, the more she didn't understand what was happening, and the more she probably struggled because of it. So they made it worse by continuing to tase her.
I got that info from a quick google search. I would imagine someone trained in using a taser (like the police for example) would have even MORE info on the subject.

BTW, where does it say she was harming herself? Here is the reason they went in:
The deputy says the team is needed because McKenna had previously attacked one of her jailers and because she had created a biohazard situation by throwing urine at guards.
Yeah. How about don't fvcking do that and then they wouldn't taze you.

They were in biohazard suits. There was no risk to them whatsover.
So what? They shouldn't have to put up with someone throwing PEE on them while they work. Do you have to put up with that at your job?
That's RIDICULOUS. She brought this on herself. On what planet is it somehow ok to throw your PEE???? If you do that, and some big guys in suits jump your ass and taze you--you deserved it.
This is a classic case of an oxygen bandit. Maybe she didn't exactly "deserve" to die--but the world isn't going to miss her, either.

So is Charles Manson and they don't let him fling his p!ss around all over. If he did, he'd probably get tazed, too.

There are no words for how ignorant this post is.
People with untreated mental illnesses do NOT comprehend their actions, nor do they comprehend how those actions affect those around them. In the midst of hallucinations both visual and auditory, she was in no frame of mind to understand that the police were trying to help her. It's likely that she thought they were a threat - this is common in schizophrenic episodes. But by all means, let's just kill her because she doesn't deserve to live. S M H

IRRELEVANT--and I don't care.
How are average deputies supposed to know if she is mentally ill? Even if they do know, it's HIGHLY doubtful they are trained to deal with it. They should NOT have to deal with some jerk wad throwing p!ss on them.
Bottom line, however, if you don't want to get tazed--don't throw your PEE on people. If you do--you get what you get.
Again, I didn't say she deserved to die--but it's HER ACTIONS that precipitated it and the world isn't worse off.

Ok, let me explain because I have personally dealt with these situations. You leave her alone in her cell. Give her some time like a time out. Then if she continues to be belligerent or out of control, you go in and give her an injection of Haldol, Xanax or some type of benzo, antipsychotic, etc. Then, you let that work and come in and DRESS her and put in her restraints. You DON'T kill the patient. Wow.

I could be mistaken, but Id be willing to hazard a guess that they didn't begin their duty shift with the thought "I think we'll kill a patient today". She died, and it's tragic, but I don't think anyone holds blame in this.

Plus, truly--how would they know:
A. That she was mentally ill or the extent of her mental illness, and
B. What to treat it with
Plus, were they doctors? Are the able to prescribe and administer narcotics such as were described? I HIGHLY doubt it.

Do you think this poor woman CHOSE to be schizophrenic?

And the police need to be trained in MORE than just subduing everyone with violence. They should be trained to RECOGNIZE a mental issue such as this, so they can call in the appropriate help. No one says they have to know how to medically treat her, but they do need to know to treat her differently.

Yes, that's the place to start.
Even libraries train their employees on how to deal with mentally ill people..

No, they don't. Different rules don't apply to them. That's BS.

Being mentally ill does not absolve you of your actions. Even those who are found "not guilty" by reason of insanity are normally sent to an institution for a long period of time--if not life.
What if your husband were a deputy there and instead of throwing pee--she stabbed him? It's not out of the realm. She was in there for attacking an officer and she had already attacked one of the jailers.

It is--but if it happens, then that prisoner usually gets a beat down or tazed--just like this one. Completely appropriate.

Horrible. You dare to call a human being an oxygen bandit? A human being. A HUMAN BEING. You, sir, have no idea what she has accomplished, who loved her, what she would have accomplished. Perhaps she was a mother. Perhaps she was an accomplished mathematical genius before schizophrenia claimed her mind. Perhaps she volunteered at the humane society. Perhaps she had the most beautiful garden in her neighborhood. Perhaps she gave birth to the scientist who will cure cancer. You know only a micro-fraction of her life and you dare to say she had no worth?
