TOPIC: Muslim teenager arrested for bringing his home-made clock into school which teachers claimed 'looked like a bomb'
I would like to know what Gaga thinks are the limits of what you can and can't bring to school.
Well, obviously, no electronics that beep. Ban those CELL PHONES!
Every school has policies on cell phones. Some schools say none and some say keep them in your locker. But, certainly if they are using them in class when they aren't supposed too, then the teacher can take them. Are you opposed to that now too?
I am if teachers are too stupid to check on what the hell is beeping before they call the cops. I mean, how did this play out?
"What is beeping in your bag?"
"The clock I made as an engineering project."
"That looks like a bomb!"
"Ask Mr. Engineering teacher! He already looked at it and approved it!"
"I don't believe you! I'm calling the cops and I'm not even going to look at it or ask the engineering teacher about it! It's beeping and it's inside a briefcase!"

My kids just can't take anything they want to school. My kid just can't say, oh I think I will take my guitar to school today and carry it around. They can't take in whatever they please.
That's assinine. Why wouldn't they be able to take a musical instrument to school?

My kids can't bring cans of soda. They can't just randomly decide to bring in anything they want. Funny how you are all "follow the rules, blah, blah" any other time. I think that in time of school shootings, that we expect schools to err on the side of caution. Thankfully it wasn't a bomb. But, they did nothing wrong to their approach.
Please show me the rule where a kid cannot take a homemade clock to school to show his engineering teacher.

So, you really expect the teacher to just open the briefcase? And, the teacher hears ticking and is just supposed to say "oh ok"? Wow.
I expect her to ask the engineering teacher. I expect them to confirm it's actually a bomb before suspending and arresting the kid. Why is that such a difficult expectation?

I certainly can show you the "rule" where teachers are mandated reporters, where teachers are supposed to report suspicious activity, and where teachers are supposed to act first in the best interest and safety of students. And, yes, if you have that standard, sometimes they will be wrong.

How about Mom call the teacher and say "hey, my son built a great clock, may he bring it in to show the class"? But, yeah, personal responsibility and all.
Toaster pastries trigger the zero tolerance alarms.
But a homemade clock in a briefcase is just a project and shouldnt trigger an alarm.
Do you live in the same country I live in?
Are you completely oblivious to climate of the times?

We empty the school when someone calls or writes on the wall "there is a bomb". But, when we have something that has the APPEARANCE of a bomb then I guess the school is just supposed to sniff and say Oh well, he is a muslim so we have to pretend not too see that because that would make us racial profilers, even though, they would certainly slam the blond kid as well for the same thing.
Kind of reminds me of all the waitress receipt notes and so forth. Seems a little to pat and convenient. And, the fact that Obama just rushed in seems even more suspect.
A backpack isn't suspicious but after Boston, I can guarantee that at least some people will give backpacks the side eye - especially if they start making noise. I don't agree with arresting Ahmed but I do feel the school made the right call in contacting the police.

Yes. They used pressure cookers. Very innocent looking but certainly out of place. Brief case, very innocent looking but certainly out of place AND ticking. Hello.

I think what they did falls under the realm of Reasonable. I think that a reasonable person would find that suspicious. OK, turns out it wasn't anything. But, it is REASONABLE to react to what you think is suspicious.
I mean, really? We arrest people even after discovering they did not commit a crime? We arrest people based on assumptions? We suspend a kid for 3 days even after he is proven innocent?
Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And if it wasn't handled this way, and it was a bomb, then everyone saying how wrong this kid was treated would be calling for heads to roll.
But I guess the party line now is to "just wait and see".

Seems like everyone was a bit at fault here. But, I do not think it warrants a trip for the student to the White House to visit the President. What?????

NOBODY FVCKING SAID THAT!!!! Investigate, yes. Arrest over nothing - no. Can't you fvcking read?
Wow. That's a lot of anger your carrying around.
And yes, I can read.
Can you?
You say investigate.
Ok. Kid walks in with what looks like it could or could not be a bomb.
2 possible outcomes.
1. It isn't a bomb.
2. It is a bomb.
In the first case, due to the no tolerance shtick these days and the times in which we live, the police are called. The boy is detained and the object is investigated by professionals. Even though it is determined the object is not a threat, the boy has violated the zero tolerance for having a device that resembles a bomb and is given suspension and is arrested. Chances are it will not go any further in the court system.
In the second situation, the boy actually has a bomb. But no one wants to make the boy feel bad so they say nothing. The boy sets the bomb off and kills and maimes a dozen or more fellow classmates.
In some situations it is better to be over cautious than not.
You can not tell me that had no one checked this out and it had been a bomb, that you wouldn't be asking why.
You can't always just sit on your thumbs waiting to see what will happen.

y'all haven't seen very many IEDs--at first glance, it sure as hell doesn't look like a clock but it DOES appear to have a timer--it obviously isn't packed with c4, etc but chemical / aerosol weapons normally won't have any explosives present either--can see where an observer could easily be mistaken and in that case, when kid's lives are at stake, prefer to err on the side of caution
over-the-top reaction or not, everyone's still alive and that's the most important issue

The world has lost its mind. Arrest the damn janitor, too. He has enough chemicals in the cleaning closet that he can combine into a toxic gas, as well. Zero tolerance and all.
Stupid.

LL, are you saying if nothing was done, everyone just shrugged and let it go, and then it actually was a bomb that blew up and killed a bunch of people, that you would not be one of the first to want to know why no one said something or called the police?
The problem with all these situations is not what actions were taken at the moment the incident is happening.
The problem is everyone reading all the fact after and then judging those involved.
You see after the incident, you have more information than the ones actually living it did at the time.

I thought they arrested the kid AFTER they found out it was a clock.

The same nonsense as suspending a kid cause his toaster pastry was bite into the shape of a gun.
The same nonsense the gets a kid arrested for having Tylenol at school.
The problem is the zero tolerance that goes on.
Policy has to be followed regardless of common sense.

I can see checking it out to make sure it was a bomb but arresting the kid they have gone to far. It scary when those at school who are in charge of your education lacks common sense.
