DEAR ABBY: A very good friend of mine had a facelift. I'm out of the country, so I have only seen pictures of her. I don't think it looks good at all. It looks fake and, in my opinion, has ruined her looks.
What should I say when I see her or when she asks me directly what I think of it? I hate to lie, but I don't want to hurt her feelings. -- HONEST FRIEND
DEAR HONEST: Sometimes people can be "too" honest, so be diplomatic if you are asked directly. Tell her you always thought she was beautiful -- inside and out -- and thought she looked great before, but if she's happy with the result, that's what's important.
Why do people think it is their job to comment on other people's lives. She had it done, she's happy. And, even if it is a bad job, what is she going to do about it now anyway? People use "Oh I am just being HONEST" as simply an excuse to just be a nasty beitch. OK, so YOU don't like it, so what? It isn't your face.
Did you guys read the same letter? The letter writer asked what to say if asked directly. Not that she would just tell her she hates it. And she is entitled to have an opinion.
Once someone asks you - then they have made it your business. Don't want an honest answer - don't ask.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
If the person is asking you then you are allowed to say whatever you want. I'd advise to be polite though. I swear people can't make a decision anymore without taking a poll of all their friends.

If you're getting a face lift you're doing it to make yourself feel better. Stop asking everyone what they think.

Based on what I've seen from actresses on soap operas over the years, I would say eventually the skin loosens up and starts to look more real after a period of time.
