Guys, I saw a quote said by Pope Francis that I can hardly believe he actually said. I would like your opinions on whether you believe he said this and if so, is he a Christian? He said "It is not necessary to believe in God to be a good person. In a way, the traditional notion of God is outdated. One can be spiritual but not religious. It is not necessary to go to church and give money-for many, nature can be a church. Some of the best people in history did not believe in God, while some of the worst deeds were done in His name."
The traditional notion of God is outdated???
It is not necessary to believe in God?? Then what about salvation?
I do agree with the part that says one can be spiritual but not religious.
Nevermind, I don't think that quote could have been accurate. The translation must have been messedup. I was just listening to him speak in St Patrick's cathedral, and what he was saying sounds nothing like that quote. He sounds like a Christian.

According to the Snopes link Welts posted, it isn't accurate.
Yes, this Pope is more down to earth and approachable.
But there is something about him that makes my spidy senses tingle.

Yes, I was able to open the link now, and it isn't accurate. I'm glad and relieved for the Catholic church that it isn't true.

Me, too. And I'm Catholic.
It sounds insane but I have this feeling of.... doom, for lack of a better word, when I see or hear him.
It isn't overwhelming.
I can't explain it really.

Hes still a joke. He lectures Congress on immigration, but not on SSM or abortion. Retard...
I listened to the entire "lecture" and he did mention abortion. He called for the respect of all life. He said that the “Golden Rule” is a good reminder of “our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development".
He received a bi-partisan standing ovation.
Your use of the word r****d is disgusting. Not because it's aimed at the pope, not because it isn't pc, but because it is used as a bullying word and shows ignorance.

The "Golden Rule"?
Do unto other what you would have them do unto you.
How exactly is that about abortion?

Lily, since life begins at conception, and the Golden Rule applies to all stages of life, I thought that would be obvious.

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.

Yes. Don't kill a baby. I get that.

I believe he also spoke about same sex marriage. I listened to the speech and remember him saying something about marriage being under attack. If that wasn't a reference to same sex marriage, then I'm confused about what it was in reference to.
Evidently, some people don't like "Pope and Change."
Since I survived 8 years in Catholic school, I can attest to that!
During my lifetime, I have seen the Masses go from all Latin (with the priest facing the altar, NOT the congregation) to English. The rules on fasting were relaxed. Lay ministers can now distribute Communion.
Tradition is valued by the Catholic Church, which is both a positive and negative thing.

Well, in that quote, Pope Francis is not saying you are getting into heaven if you don't believe in God - this doesn't comment on salvation. He's only saying it's still possible to be a good person if you don't believe in God, which is true. The only real problem I have is the "the traditional notion of God is outdated". God is never outdated - he is the beginning, the middle and the end.

Many Catholics can actually think for themselves...Oh, wait, you're trying to be witty by using the sheep/Shepherd allusion.
flan
I'm actually not talking about Catholics. I'm talking about non-believers that think he's just wonderful. THAT is the problem. He's pandering to them...
Ando to clarify, the sheep "allusion" had NOTHING to do with the Shepherd. It's about the sheep jumping off the cliff...

Oh, come on. That 'quote' made the rounds ages ago, and was proven to be false then and it is still fake now. Much ado about nothing.
O4, if anyone is a wolf in sheep's clothing doing the devils work to destroy the faith, it is people like you, and people like Lily. Your nasty additude in the name of Christianity does more harm to the image of the faith and turns more people off from it and away from God then this Pope ever could.
You should see how you look from the outside. It is shameful.

Sorry, but when a church leader goes COMPLETELY against the teaching of the Bible, then I MUST call him out. People believe his drivel. A lot of what he says is incompatible with Christianity...

And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone that comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
People who don't believe in God can certainly do things that would be considered "good". Ok. That's nice. Now what? Want a cookie?
I don't know that anyone said that people with no faith can't do good things. The danger comes in when people say things like "well, I've led a pretty good life, so I'll go to heaven when I die". That is CLEARLY not the criteria to get into heaven. Neither is simply being "spiritual".

Sheep have strong herding instincts. If one goes over a cliff, then others may follow. They're not actively committing suicide.
In any case, I like this Pope. Big surprise, eh?
I don't like him enough to convert to Catholicism, but I like him.
If you think he's a "retard", well, that's up to you. It's a profoundly disrespectful remark.
