I just found it interesting. I honestly don't know how I feel. I DO think it's an invasion of privacy but OTOH like LL is always saying we've come to a place in society where no one has any shame for anything anymore. Used to be shame kept us from doing certain things. Not anymore. If you really need the help I understand but I do sense his frustration in people who have been on the dole for a long time. And catch the time limit. He wants to limit food stamps to 60 months, which is five years. Which says, at least to me, that there are people that have been on it a lot longer than that.

There is an annual budget release of funds appropriations in the paper.
It lists a total for each department.
But to list an individual name and address for each would be insane.
Talk about breeding contempt.
The misuse of funds in the welfare system needs to be stopped. I never disputed that.
There is no contempt to be bred if people are using services as designed and without fraud and corruption. Why are you soooo afraid to weed out the fakers?
I'm not. I've NEVER said otherwise.
I've thought long and hard about it, offered real ideas and possible solutions.
But this is not the way to do it.
It's shaming. And it'll shame the wrong people.
It's like passing tougher gun laws. The criminals just don't give a rat's butt about your laws.

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. I've never heard of school board members getting paid.
All our board members get paid - school, commission, planning and zoning. Not much, but they get paid.
Ours get a salary too.

There is a huge difference between having the right to look something up in the public records (tedious, time consuming and most people won't take the steps to do it) and having the information printed in the paper for anyone to open and see. Huge difference.

This.
Yes, and there is no reason a person's address needs to be listed with it. If it had to be done, a name would be enough.

I could make a really tacky joke here...

In TN, all states employees salaries (from governor to school janitor) are listed on a web site. I don't think their addresses are, but their name, position, length of employment, and hourly/salary wage.
It's not just state employees, DD works for the county and her salary is posted online.

I think everyone on the dole should feel a little shame.

In a way I agree. I don't think they should have to hide but welfare has gotten out of control in this country.

You're missing the point. Most who really need it are already ashamed of themselves.
Those who abuse it couldn't be bothered to care less.

I fence sit on this one. I really haven't ever met anyone ashamed to be on food stamps. It's almost a brag. In fact, we've had police involved lately on some of the FB sites where people are selling them.
The thing that sticks out to me when I read this is the figure of 60 months. That's FIVE YEARS. If you are still on them after five years you're lazy. And if that hurts someone's feelings then so be it. Now I'm not including the elderly or the TRULY disabled in that statement. But it doesn't take five years to find a job.
There was a video with this. They honestly addressed both sides. It was the most unbiased talk I have ever heard. They talked about that there ARE some people who make more on welfare than if they got a job. And that needs to change. But they also talked about a lot of the people who fall through the cracks and really need it.
I seriously sit on the fence here. That's why I wanted to see how others felt before I posted what I thought!

If there is a right to know the salaries because they are paid by taxes, it there also a right to know how those salaries are spent? Because it is still tax money. Just wondering...
Ok so here I sit in a nice house, with nice things, financially comfortable, 25 years ago, a different story. I don't know had I been given the welfare benefits that I would have achieved what I did achieve. Doubt it very much. Welfare has to be designed so daycare is in place, higher learning, and a time limit. No section 8, etc.

I agree. You have to make it so people have to get off it. Otherwise they'll sit on it forever.

The thing I don't like now, is that daycare is available even for people who aren't working. So people are dumping their kids off at daycare and not going to work, and not looking for work. Bummer.

I am still astounded by the fact that they have no time limits on welfare. In Texas the time limit for food stamps is three months. You are only allowed to receive three months of food stamps every three years unless you are elderly or disabled. But if you are on disability you won't qualify.

I dropped out of high school when DD was born. I wanted to go to adult HS instead of getting a GED. I couldnt do that unless I was on AFDC (welfare ). Its total BS that the system wont help you unless you are on welfare.

I don't understand what you're saying here. Not trying to be rude at all. I just am not seeing what you're saying. It's me. I'm confused.

I think the adult classes were not available unless you were on welfare - which seems silly. If you were working to support yourself they would not help you with the adult classes.

This! I didn't want a GED. I wanted a HS diploma. But I could not get one unless I was on welfare. I wasn't even eligible to take classes....

Holy cow, I am dumbfounded that you said that, well, not you, but anyone. 30 years ago I was giving money to the United way. When DS was born, and I needed daycare, I was turned down for supplemented daycare fees by the United Way. They said I earned more money than their clients. I asked who their clients were; they were people on welfare, I asked "well if on welfare and so didn't work, why did they need daycare?" The answer was they took the kids and fed them, blah blah. I didn't and still don't give a dime to the United Way/

When I was in college the United Way paid my daycare so I could go to school. And yes. I was on welfare. I think my copayment was like ten dollars a week though. Without that United Way funding I would not have made it through college.

That is legit though. You were bettering yourself to get off of welfare. Now, the people drop off their kids at free daycare and go back home to bed or whatever else they want to do. It's not the way it is supposed to work.

I don't mind day care for people who are low income and working, or for people who are working towards an educational goal etc. But daycare for people who are not working and just going home to go back to bed...nope. Not cool.
