My dad was an egineer. He did communications. It was a very good career. Once we lived in south Florida he worked for the phone company and had a hand in transitioning to laying fiber optic cables. He would draw out plans for everything to be laid out in new communities too.

He needs to explore all the different engineering disciplines his first year of college. There are so many and exploring the different ones will help him to whittle it down.

That's what MY dad did! He worked at the airport though on all the radio's and towers.

Make sure he doesn't forget metallurgical engineering. Lots of steel mills not far from your area.

My plant employs 10 different engineers. We have quite a mix, chemical, electrial, mechanical...and 3 metallurgists.

As for what they do, the metallurgists are responsible for the mix of raw materials going into our product and quality control. The rest are the big picture guys to keep everything running and work closely with our maintenance department.
