When a patient is in imminent danger of a heart attack, you want a monitoring device that can relay data quickly. That's what today's Stock of the Week specializes in.
Heart Monitor
Daniel S. Perkins
BioTelemetry Inc. (BEAT) is a leading supplier of monitoring devices worn by patients who have had serious heart problems or are at risk of having them. If a patient starts to have a cardiac event, Biotelemetry's Mobile Cardiac Outpatient Telemetry (MCOT) equipment picks it up even before the patient is aware of it. The device connects within seconds to a company monitoring center, where technicians analyze what is happening and contact the patient's physician or emergency responders.
The aging of the US population and the growth of insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act—together with increasing pressure to avoid high-cost hospitalization and make treatment more efficient—all benefit the company.
BioTelemetry's technology is used to monitor more than 500,000 patients a year. It had revenue of $167 million last year, which should grow 20% this year. Long-term debt is just $23 million, and the company has $15 million in cash and equivalents on hand. BioTelemetry will likely expand into monitoring of additional medical conditions and working with researchers during clinical trials, where cardiac monitoring is also needed.
Fiscal year: December. Earnings per share: 2016 est./$0.55…2015/$0.41…2014/$0.10.

Whoa, hold on a minute. Yes, it looks like a wonderful product and I am sure you would be able to sell it. But do not gloss over the first statement. What is this about knowing whether you still have a job in early November. Forced retirement; downsizing?

My employer was purchased by a bigger firm recently.
For those doing what I do, they have 119 positions that will remain, and 150 people.
They still haven't decided (they say) what the criteria will be for keeping one's position.
The other company has one person locally, who wants to keep her job.
We have two in Manhattan and 3 others in between this lady's home and Manhattan.
She MIGHT take any one of those 5 positions.
I might be the only one who hasn't sent out my resume. Everyone is nervous.

Yes, but I'll be a lot more comfortable if I keep this job for another two years.

Ed, I was in that position these past years which is why I pulled out all the stops on networking and have my current job. I can do the job but it sooo challenging, You've heard me say the long hours I work, but it's more of a balance between personal life and work life, it's different but not bad, KWIM.
You can do this Ed, You have so much corporate, product experience that you are so valuable. You are eligible for medicare so become a consultant. Charge them $!50/hour suck up having to pay the SE (SS tax for self employed) You will still be visiting the same doctors, selling the same product. You will be great! Plus, start writing articles for the NE journal of medicine. You have the knowledge, you just need the confidence.

Ed - at a minimum, if they decide they don't want to keep you (which they would be hella stupid not to) I hope they offer you a big fat severance check that makes you smile and not look back. But I would rather they keep you busy.
