I actually only know 1 person who owns a gun, and I do not know anyone who was killed in a car accident. I do know 2 people who were killed in a plane crash though. It wasn't until we moved somewhere rural that we even knew anyone who had guns in their home. DD's old high school had a shooting team. But that was SO foreign to us.

No one in my family or my extended family owned a gun growing up. Once I was out of the house, my dad bought a gun and uses it only at the range. He keeps the gun unloaded in a cement block room in the basement with a steel door and a padlock. The bullets are kept in a safe, inside a lock box. No chance of anyone having an accident.

That is statistically very, very odd.

I know. The strange thing is, my parents don't know anyone who was killed in a car accident either. They didn't know the people killed in the plane crash. But we just don't know many people who were even IN a car accident beyond a simple fender bender.

My sister was killed by a hit and run driver.  My older brother died in a car accident when he lost control of the car and hit a tree.  My roommate from college died in a car accident when she had an asthma attack while driving.   And those are just the people I was close to - there are more that I knew, just not well.

My 5th grade teacher was killed in a one-car accident when I was 10. He had a 1955 Pontiac, just like my parents' car.

This was pre-seatbelts.

when we moved into this house, our next door neighbor had a gun safe in his family room. I could see it from my yard. He had been a hunter, he had rifles and shotguns.

Because I DO NOT THINK I am capable of killing another human being.

an honest and rational response--unfortunately there are many, many others in the world who wouldn't hesitate for a second to take YOUR life (or mine)--viz this incident, for example--and i'm not talking combat, i'm referring to everyday life here in our little corner of the world

by remaining unarmed/untrained, you're taking the rather considerable risk that a) it can't happen to you or b) even if it does, i'll be able to rely on the law to handle things--THAT, to me personally, is a much greater risk than the possibility of having to kill someone else to defend your own life because if you're dead it won't matter

as we say around here, " better to be judged by twelve than carried by six. "

Flan. Could you kill if someone was pointing a gun at your family?

If you were at that college as he was gunning people down and you could shoot him and stop him, would you?

DDs husband goes to school during the day and works nights. (God love him). We pay for her security system and paid for her gun control training. We even bought her a gun shes comfortable with. Its totally worth it.

I appreciate what you are saying, but I don't understand it. I have never lived somewhere that I thought I needed a gun to be safe at night. Maybe she could have used the money to move to a safer neighborhood? Not trying to be snarky, just honestly curious.

Safer places? Like college campuses and malls?

You know where there are security guards everywhere?

Well I am of course assuming that O4's daughter doesn't live at the mall nor at a college. Sheesh.

I mean crap! MILITARY bases and recruiting centers have been targets of shooters.

Where on earth could be "safer" than those?

Mass shootings are not the norm. They may seem like it, but they are not. Most violent crimes occur in neighborhoods steeped in drugs. The typical residential neighborhood is not likely to be the target of gun violence unless it is in what we would consider a "bad neighborhood".

No place is safe.  We have one of the richest, nicest, gated communities not too far away, and an elderly couple was killed - the man beheaded (the head has never turned up), and the woman found in the lake a few days later.  The crazies are everywhere, and everyone needs to be prepared.

And every neighborhood has had some kind of criminal activity in it.

Break ins, vandalism, drugs. Even those nice gated communities.

Always good to be prepared.

I'm willing to bet that many of those killed either in Oregon, or Colorade, or Virginia Tech, or elsewhere were MUCH stronger than the shooters.  Not sure how you think that is in any way relevant.

I leave the house all the time.  In my parts, I worry more about running over a squirrel than I do some random killer.  If I had I gun, I wouldn't even have the chance to use it.  I can barely text.  In my home, I feel safe.

I think that's the disconnect.

There are those who don't see the point in having them and then there are those who have always had them and they are use to them being there.

That's absurd.  If someone came with a gun, all the strength in the world is irrelevant.

So what?  I feel safe in my home to.  I feel perfectly safe when I go out. I went to a Mexican bar in Chula Vista for God's sakes and never had any problem.   How is that in any way relevant to the conversation?

If you feel better having them, then that's cool.  I don't care either way.  I don't have them and I personally don't feel I need them.  I'm good either way.  Just keep them out of the wrong hands. If you do own them... be responsible about it.

Why do you assume you would be sleeping?  The students at Oregon were wide awake.  A shooting could happen at a house as easily as a college.

Ok.  So we're not sleeping.  Don't know that having a gun would save me.  When I have to get to it.  My stored, locked up gun.  Wouldn't help me either way.  IF I had a gun.. it most likely wouldn't be at the ready so I would have to rely on my ninja, Hit girl skills...  I got this!

Being strong is everything. It's not irrelevant. I'm very tiny, but I'm very strong. I'm a mother... and I will fight forever to stay alive so my kids can enjoy me! lol. I won't go down easy. No joke.

That has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the subject we are discussing.  It is irrelevant.

One of my cousins told me about her guns.

She and her husband have several pistols, all loaded and easily accessible. All have trigger locks, so the kids can't fire them.

The trigger locks all take the same key, and there are only two keys. She has one on a chain around her neck, her husband has the other key on a chain.

If someone was breaking in, they could have a loaded gun, ready to fire, in less than 30 seconds, no matter where they were in the house.

The sole purpose of having their guns is ...

wait for it ...

self defense.

So they have to be ready.

Never had trigger locks on a gun, ever.

They have always been either in the closet or a drawer.

Rounds or shells kept in a box beside them.

They were just always there.

We knew how to use them. Knew how to load them and with what.

Knew which ones we needed a tree behind us when we shot it.

The .22 rifle was the one we took into the woods and fields with us.

There was never any thought about if we should have them or not.

We just did.

And I can't understand that mindset.  What is the big deal?  People talk like owning a gun is some huge thing to get all worked up about. It's not any more of a big deal than owning a car or a TV.

Because TV's kill you all the time...

GUNS do not kill....people kill people...yes maybe they use a gun, maybe a knife, maybe a hammer, maybe a car...should all of those things be banned because someone *might* use them to kill someone?

So if he had stabbed her instead you'd say ban all knives? Again the logic of blaming an inanimate object when it is obvious it's the PERSON using it just makes no sense.

I didn't say ban anything.  I asked what you thought.  Sheesh.  Calm down.

I think it's a shame. But what is your solution? Should no one be able to hunt anymore?

I was speaking in general so I think you might want to calm down. Sheesh.
