The Oregon college gunman wrote that he would be 'welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil' in a rambling letter he left behind before committing his massacre.
Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, wrote that he was 'in a bad way' and 'had no life', an anonymous official who has seen the note told NBC News.
He is also said to complained that he did not have a girlfriend, adding that 'he felt the world was against him'. The full letter is yet to be released by investigators.
Mercer, who killed nine people at Umpqua Community College yesterday, was discharged from a U.S. Army training center in 2008.
It is also now believed that the shooter had Asperger's Syndrome and attended a high school for students with behavioral issues.
People who went to school with the mass murderer also spoke of the chilling drawings of skulls, bones and coffins Mercer would scrawl on his notebooks. He is also alleged to have had a 'manifesto' with the '666' written across it. Mercer, who died in a shoot-out with police after the massacre, was suffering from Asperger's Syndrome, according to online posts written by his mother.
His mother Laurel, a nurse, wrote on a medical forum that she had an 'Asperger's kid' and told neighbors her son had 'mental issues', according to reports.
The email she used was linked to her by public records, which also confirmed her profession.
According to reports she also told neighbors that her son had ‘mental issues’ and attended a special school for pupils with special needs.
Mercer attended the Switzer Center in Los Angeles, that specializes in students with behavioral issues aged 12 to 22. He left in 2009
Former classmates of the killer say he had an obsession with drawing macabre pictures of bones, coffins and skulls on his notebook.
'He had this notebook with all these pictures of skulls that he had traced, and they had like fire in their eyes and looked really weird,' Gabriel Rivera, 25, told People.
'He would sit in class and just draw weird s**t like bones or coffins instead of doing the work.'
'Chris didn't talk to anyone. He was mad that he was at the school and didn't like anyone. He didn't have a lot of friends, I can't even think of anyone who he ever was friends with.'
A source also told People that Mercer had a 'manifesto' with '666' written across it, and wrote about wanting to 'serve darkness'.
'The guy did this strictly for satanic purposes. He did it to become a god in hell. He wants to be evil. That is his goal, to serve Satan,' the source said
While there is no suggestion that Mercer’s mental health problems led directly to his rampage, Adam Lanza, who killed 26 teachers and children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012 also had Asperger’s.
Earlier today the Pentagon said Mercer was kicked out of the Army while training at Fort Jackson.
Officials said he was discharged after just five weeks of training in late 2008 after 'failing to meet the minimum administrative standards to serve in the U.S. Army'.
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Ben Garrett said Harper-Mercer was in the military for a little over a month at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, but was discharged for failing to meet the minimum standards.
Garrett did not say which standards Harper-Mercer failed. Generally, the Army requires recruits to pass physical fitness tests and to be in generally good physical and mental health. Recruits must also pass a multiple-choice test covering science, math, reading comprehension and other topics.
The New York Times reports that while living in his former home in Torrance, Los Angeles, he was extremely bothered by barking dogs and ****roaches in their apartment
Neighbor Julia Winstead said that Laurel Mercer told her: ‘My son is dealing with some mental issues, and the roaches are really irritating him’.
‘She said they were going to go stay in a motel. Until that time, I didn’t know she had a son.’
Reina Webb, 19, said the Mercer's mother was friendly and often chatted with neighbors, but he kept to himself.
She said she occasionally heard him having temper tantrums in his apartment.
'He was kind of like a child so that's why his tantrums would be like kind of weird. He's a grown man. He shouldn't be having a tantrum like a kid. That's why I thought there was something - something was up,' she said.
Another neighbor, Bronte Harte, said Harper-Mercer 'seemed really unfriendly' and would 'sit by himself in the dark in the balcony with this little light'. The revelation came as investigators said they had found seven weapons at Mercer's home overnight, as well as six at the school - more than previously thought and all owned legally.
Mercer, 26, was carrying an assault rifle and five pistols during his attack at the college.
This included a 9mm Glock pistol and a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson, which were both traced back to the deranged shooter.
He also had a .40-caliber Taurus pistol listed as being owned by someone in Portland and a .556-caliber Del-Ton, as well as five more ammo magazines, according to an official firearms report.
Police found a shotgun, four rifles and two pistols at Mercer's apartment.
Mercer was carrying a flak jacket containing steel plates, as well as five additional magazines of ammunition when he was confronted at the school, Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.
All of the guns were purchased legally, either by him or family members.
Shortly after the shooting, President Barack Obama addressed the nation demanding stronger gun laws, saying that the country has become 'numb' to these mass shootings.
According to witnesses, Harper-Mercer went through the school campus, demanding that his victims lay on the ground.
He then made them stand up one at a time and state their religion before opening fire according to one traumatized eyewitness.
Harper-Mercer's spree continued until police officers arrived and shot him dead.
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin has said repeatedly that he and his deputies are not going to say the shooter's name because that's what he would have wanted.
'I will not name the shooter. I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act,' said a visibly angry Hanlin.
Hundreds went to a candlelight vigil Thursday night, with many raising candles as the hymn Amazing Grace was played.
The nine victims killed in Thursday's massacre have been named by police. Officials identified the nine people as; Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18; Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; Treven Taylor Anspach, 20; Lucas Eibel, 18; Lawrence Levine, 67; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18; Sarena Dawn Moore, 44; and Jason Dale Johnson, 33 .

One of the American hero's that stopped the terrorist two weeks ago on the Train in Europe went to this college. It could be that Mercer's motivation for choosing that particular school was to avenge that situation.
