No. I don't like that.

It's too serious of a real situation to make fun of it.

This.  So much this.  And you really have to think about the kids.  The second house would scare my SS.  He's smart but he has this irrational fear of zombies.  I bought DH a Walking Dead blanket last Christmas and SS won't have anything to do with it.  If you cover him up with it he cries.  I know it's stupid.  Totally.  But there are kids out there that are afraid of stuff like this.

Zombies, vampires, monsters in general don't bother me.

We know and we teach our kids those things are not real. It's for fun. Nothing more.

Besides, I know how to kill all those.

But the ISIS thing IS real. It really happens. It shouldn't become fodder for entertainment.

You can teach kids things like zombies aren't real. SS knows that. But kids can be afraid of the weirdest things. You can't control that.

Good lord Lily. Do you follow me around the board just dissecting everything? Again, you made a GENERAL WE comment that said we teach our kids not to be scared. That was one of those general we's wasn't it? Or was it not? Because it's getting really hard to keep track. You made the general we comment about teaching them not to be afraid. I made the comment that you sometimes can't teach a child NOT to be afraid. Kids are weird about some things. Some kids don't like clowns. Are clowns bad? No. But there are kids terrified of them anyway.

How about instead every time you accuse me of making stuff all about me you just ignore me since you obviously have a problem with me. I keep my avatar the same. You don't have to snipe and snark at every post I make. If I bother you that much, so much that you have to accuse me of making it about me, just ignore me. That's an option you know. Instead of just always making a snarky comment.

I don't like clowns either. They have them at the hospital parties we go to each year and they use the same people. I've gotten used to them because I have gotten to know them over the years, but generally, clowns bother me. Stranger clowns scare me.

 Robots.

They freak me the flip out.

The boxy ones are worse than the more real ones.

But, even as a child I knew they were not going to come to life and do anything.

And if my parents had tried to shelter me from my irrational fear, I never would have learned how to deal with it.

All I am saying is that Halloween is an annual event. And a person can't just shut down for the month of October.

Yep.  Sometime kids jut have irrational fears.  That doesn't mean you shelter them by any means, but that also doesn't mean if they don't like clowns you hire one for their bday party to expose them to one to get over it.  I think the point I was trying to make was that one house near the elementary school had a lot of zombie like creatures.  Some kids would find that absolutely cool as all get out and others would find it scary.  I DO NOT think they should take down their decorations.  But I probably wouldn't have decorated like that.  My DS loves to decorate but nothing scary like that.  We have spider webs and he wrapped the garage door in "Danger Zone" tape.  We have some tombstones and stuff.  It's pretty simple but we have a TINY front yard.

Yeah, I understand parents want pictures of their kids but when they're screaming bloody murder it doesn't make sense.

They have to "toughen up" all too soon.

Last year we went to a Halloween party at the club. They had a haunted house. I warned them, but they insisted on going in. #2 was scared out of his mind. I felt horrible for him. The zombie removed his mask so he could see it wasn't real. He calmed down a bit after that. He didn't want to go on the scary tractor ride after that. I didn't make him. We stayed back and sipped warm cider while #1 went with DH. I would not force anything on either of them that they were afraid of. Fortunately, they were never afraid of Santa or the Easter Bunny, so that wasn't an issue.

We have a big Children's Museum in town & their annual haunted house is a huge deal. They have "lights on" times as well. One year (and one year only), I took the boys. They were still scared, and the people in costume kept getting in their faces.

I wouldn't force anyone to do something they were afraid of. I don't like the haunted houses either.

That is not what I was saying.

Mom always made it a point to visit the Halloween costume aisle when we were kids.

I have done the same thing with mine.

Teaching a kid what's real and what's play is just as important as teaching them to tie their shoes.

Of course my kids are lucky enough to have my mordib since of fun. We still have scary movie day on Christmas eve.

I think that is a good point Lilly. It is good to have a "safe scare". I think it does kind of teach kids what is real from what is not real. There is nothing wrong with some good Halloween fun. And, far too many Christians act like a bunch of legalistic prudes concerning Halloween. It is just a bunch of kids dressing up and pretending. It isn't worshipping Satan or whatever. It's pretend. Nothing wrong with that.

Halloween for us was always about the candy and maybe exploring a fantasy.

I mean, how often can you dress up like a super hero and go out in public and NOT be considered a loonatic?

I don't think the typical 8 year old will comprehend the ISIS "scene".

It just seems wrong. Like making jokes about 9/11.

I gotta start visiting more Walmarts.

We have two. I worked the 6pm to 3 am shift for a while, worked from 11pm to 7am shift for a lot longer. I have NEVER seen the "People of Walmart" like is in the pictures.

Clearly. I am missing something.

I went into ours one night. I was working at the time. 3-11. It was about 12:30 in the middle of night. There was a guy in a pink leotard with a pink tutu and a little headband with sparkly things on it. It was June at the time. I remember how hot it was. I laughed so hard.

I dunno. I don't see tons of weird people at Wal-Mart. I don't think I really bother or notice others normally. But a grown man in a pink tutu kind of sticks out.

However, we were at Sam's the other day and there were these twin boys and they were so well behaved. I mean, they had manners and were polite and everything. I complimented them on the way out. I don't know if it was their mom or grandma but she made them tell me thank you for the compliment.

Last Halloween, DS enjoyed the costumes and festivities as much as a 10 month old could. No tears. But, the scariest costume we came across was one of our friends dressed up as Dracula. He very much enjoyed trick-or-treating and gave everyone a huge smile. He went as a pumpkin.

This year, he hasn't been around any costumed people yet but, so far, he's enjoyed seeing the costumes on the shelves and looking at them. This year, he's going as a warrior king. It will be interesting to watch his reactions to costumes during trick-or-treating this year.

He's visited Santa and the Easter Bunny and LOVED both.

DH and I love haunted houses but we won't try taking DS through one until he's a lot older. I don't think he's ready for that level of fake fright.

The church does a fall festival each year and they do some sort of something in the corn field.

One year it was choose a path kind of thing that took you through different possible scenarios. Its that kind of thing.

They were talking about what to do this year.

I suggested gross or scary toys.

Like the commercial where the team is operating on the operation game. And ooey looey with boogers everywhere. Maybe garbage pail kids running amock.

They liked it. But we won't know until the night of the festival.

I don't care for the "decorations" depicted in the OP. Hanging the president in effigy, depicting the torture, hangings and beheadings...maybe at an adult Halloween party, but not out in public. Too close to the real thing, I think.

In general, I don't mind the blood and the gore associated with Halloween, but those hit a little too close for me.

Yes, I agree. Ghosts, goblins, spooky things, OK. But that is too much for my tastes. One time, I saw a car that was driving down the road with a limb hanging out. And, at first you thought it was real. That is very disturbing and not in a fun or funny way. Things like that just seem too real.
