Rather than take over the daily, I thought I'd post here.

Recap - DH hit a parked car on Saturday and totalled our Nissan Versa.  So now we need a new car.

Dream Car - Subaru Outback, but gas mileage isn't good enough.

I commute an hour each way so what ever I get needs to get good gas mileage.  I would like a hatchback or a crossover.

Suggestions?

Also, does anyone know how long it usually takes an insurance company to assess the car as totaled and issue a check?

Is your DH okay?

If the insurance company takes more then 3 days to assess and issue a check, you need a different insurance company.

Good luck.

My favorite car is a Highlander Hybrid. I got 35 mpg in mixed (mostly city) driving, about 45 mph in highway driving.

It was as smooth and quiet as any car I've driven.

My A3 gets great gas mileage. It's turning out to be a disappointing car overall, though. My Altima got pretty good mileage, but it was so loud that it gave me headaches. The VW golf is pretty much the same car as the A3 and we have friends who love theirs. I will say that it is super fun to drive.
I'm already looking to the next car. We are thinking Honda, Acura, or infinity.
Bear in mind that I am spoiled rotten when it comes to cars.

My rav4 is awesome but only gets 25 mpg.
Honda makes nice fuel efficient cars.

The car insurance company covers our rental for up to 30 days. They said today that it should take approx 3 days to have the car assessed and an adjuster call us and finalize everything.

I don't have any ideas but I'm in the market for a new vehicle too so I feel your pain.

What gas mileage are you looking for?

I have a Chevy Equinox AWD. I get 18-20mpg around town. When I take a long trip, it's 25-30

My dad has a Chevy Cruz and he gets 40+ mpg. He puts 60k plus miles on his cars a year.

highlander is an excellent choice--smaller but just as solid, RAV4--you drive a lot so reliability / low maintenance cost / comfort should be just as (if not more) important than fuel economy only

I haven't seen a RAV4 Hybrid. Is that on the market?

i'm trying to come up with a list of cars I want to test drive / go look at this weekend. Then the following weekend I can do my research, have my cash ready and go buy something. Luckily living in LA their are tons of places to buy a car, so I am not worried about getting what I want once I figure it out.

I haven't because I've always been wary of American unless its a work truck.  I'm sure that its mostly bias.

I have a 2009 Mercury Mariner with almost 90K miles on it.  That is the same car as the Escape just with nicer details.  I haven't had a problem with it, yet.

Plus, I like Ford b/c they did not take government handout money.  When the recession hit, they handled it right.

i want to test a used Toyota Matrix and a Subaru hatchback. I don't think we can quite afford the Outback that I really want. I'd like to only spend around 15k, but we are a bit flexible.

No.  But I had a Mazda MPV and the "MPV" stood for "multi problem vehicle".  I'll never buy a mazda again.  When I took it to the dealer to find out why it always smelled like oil, they found 19 pin prick oil leaks in my engine - and it was only 6 years old.

My rav4 is a 2012. It's got great leg room in  the back. Cargo area isn't great. It's a perfect small SUV for zipping around town.

It's officially totaled, checks in the mail. It was more than I was expecting so we are happy.

Are you figuring out what to buy? Do you have a "short list"?

Please consider and test drive a Highlander (or hybrid) before you decide.

I don't want a highlander, but thanks!  The Prius V is a hybrid.

I know, I've been driving a Prius for 5 years, after 3 years with a Highlander Hybrid.

All I'm suggesting is that, before you buy a Prius, you test drive a hybrid that has excellent all-around visibility.

Maybe I should post some pictures from the driver's seat of the Prius, showing the huge blind spots in the left front and (especially) the right front.
