I stopped at Target on my way to work. I was a bit peeved at the young cashier who did not put my 4 perishable items in the same bag AND who put the Drano in with chips...I got to the car & a bottle of hair conditioner had slipped to the rear of the cart. I just stood there, stunned. I literally could not think...
PLUS, there was a police car parked next to me!
I didn't have time to go back into the store, so I just put it in a bag, and drove to work. After work, I'll go back there & pay the $2.97 + tax.
flan
I wouldn't bother. There have been times when I have paid for something & they forgot to bag it & left it on the belt. I don't go back to get it either so I figure it all evens out in the end.

I'm afraid that you run the risk of being arrested for shoplifting, unless you have the right story.
DO NOT tell them YOU put it into the basket and forgot about it.
MAYBE tell them you found it in a basket you were about to take in the parking lot, and ask them to put it in the "lost and found" in case someone comes back for it.
Side note, the cashier who failed to make sure the basket was empty while you were paying, could get fired.

That would never happen. They have to CATCH you shoplifting. My son stole a pair of sunglasses from Kohls when he was younger. I took him to the store and made him tell the manager what he had done. The manager told me, outside of earshot of my son, that unless they caught him doing it, there was nothing they could do about it.

Next time you are in there, buy a bottle of conditioner and leave it in the buggy when you leave. It will go back in stock and you will have paid for yours...

Flan, keep the conditioner. In about a month there will be those Salvation Army people ringing bells, Boy Scout food drives, or Toys for Tots, or Coats for Kids. Just atone your guilt by giving to whichever speaks to you. There are others I can't think of off the top of my head.
flan - last week Target "gave" me a box of trash bags. I was buying two. They were on the belt, went through and were bagged, and I looked at my reciept after I got back to the office b/c I was supposed to get a $5 gift card for buying two, and when I realized I didn't have it, I looked at the reciept to see if it was on there and he didn't hand it to me. Nope - only one box of trash bags. But, they also overcharged me for something else I bought. Between the gift card I would have gotten, and the overcharging - it pretty much washed.
