Take a Bath

OK, after work yesterday thought I would head out and pick up some groceries. Right after I got my cart there was a horrible, foul smell. I didn't know if it was my cart or something in the store or what. I moved along picking up my groceries. When I got to the front line, there were 2 middle aged men checking out. The stench was soooo bad I almost vomited. So did a lot of other people. Ok, maybe you are on tough times but you can take a freaking bath. Wow.

And, I am very good at recognizing smells. There is a huge difference between someone who just played a sporting event or someone who has put in a hard days work versus the stench of someone that hasn't bathed in weeks. It's unmistakeable.

Were they homeless?

I cannot stand that stale BO/dirty smell. Actual sweaty, worked hard all day man smell actually smells good to me. Those pheromones are powerful! But like you said, there is a HUGE difference between body odor from being unwashed and from having just run a marathon.

When I worked at a 7-11 in Hawaii the fishermen would come in after weeks at sea and would smell so bad my eyes would water.

I've had those run ins.

I feel really sorry for the kids.

We have old men in this area that are like that. They wear wool pants and flannel shirts, with long johns under them year round, looks like the same ones. They aren't homeless, they have homes, albeit very modest ones in the country, and are generally retired or living on disability.

They DO have running water, but they do not bathe very frequently. I've always wondered if it was due to arthritis or something (because of the wool pants and flannel in the summer.) But they will make your eyes water.

My mother's parents lived in houses with water from a pump in the kitchen. The water heater was a pot on top of the wood stove.

There was no possibility of a shower, and heating water for the tub was a big chore.

There are people in this country still living like that. And there are people who grew up like that, and even with modern plumbing, don't change their childhood patterns or habits.

I worked with a man who wreaked. I complained, and his office space was moved further from me. Fortunately the smell was short-lived. But sadly, it was because he died. At his desk. With playboy mags found. Ew.

It is sad when kids smell like they haven't had a bath in months. I've seen kids in dirty clothes, smell and look like they haven't had a bath in days. Soap and water is not that expensive. I feel so sorry for the kids and the parents should be ashamed.

We have had to talk to library patrons if other people complained...NOT a pleasant conversation.

Some kids live in places with a shared bathroom where it's not necessarily safe.

Some parents are never sober. I had neighbors who were almost always high, their kids were messed up, but probably clean enough.
