The cynic in me is wondering if they can now write off the cost of the meal since they donated it?
Unfortunately, it's only deductible if it's a donation to an approved non-profit organization / charity.
Maybe if they'd called up a local homeless shelter or church, said "we have some food we'd like to donate to you, can you get people here?" then it might have been a donation to that charity.
It sounds like that's exactly what they did. They partnered with a local shelter.
I only say cynical, because my first thought was that they did this to somehow get something for their troubles as well as to help others. I could be totally wrong though. They might just be perfectly altruistic.

I wouldn't take issue with that.

I'm perfectly okay with them getting a tax write off for the food. They could have done so many other things. It was nice that they helped.

I mean, a tax deduction for charitable giving is really not all it's cracked up to be and it's going to be limited by a percentage of their income. They certainly aren't getting credit for the entire $35,000.00.
