 Words vs. physical assault?

Wow...

If you don't have respect--you need to learn some, one way or another.  She deserved an ass beat.

Okay, thanks. That makes a big difference.

(And I rarely click links, as I've had bad luck in the past.)

Yeah, there's a video of her, an 18 year old, hitting a policeman. If she had been outside of that school a broken arm would have been the least of her problems. She is damn lucky. Parents raise these brats and let them loose on society and then expect everyone else to deal with them.

With respect to how this particular situation should have been handled... I don't know. I do think the officer used excessive force, the girl wasn't endangering anyone.

I think it's a problem with the school system (and of course, ultimately the parents). I doubt that this is the first time that this girl has been disrespectful and/or noncompliant with teachers/authority. She probably should have been suspended or kicked out long ago. If you're not here to learn, out you go and your parents can deal with you. Somewhere along the line, a child's "right to an education" has over-ridden the expectation that they behave.

I don't know if the officer should have been fired. I think a suspension without pay would have sufficed. And the girl should also see some consequences for her actions.

I agree lady. I don't think he should have been fired either. Maybe, like you said, a suspension. But I'm not sure there were many options here. This girl went so far as to hit him. That is on a video the OP failed to note. You don't just go around hitting policeman. Not even if you're in high school. She's 18 too and I think there's a huge difference than say a 12 year old being defiant and an 18 year old being defiant. I think throwing her was wrong but this girl is headed for a life of trouble. Her parents have taught her she is above the rules and doesn't have to respect authority. When you teach your kids that they WILL end up in trouble. She refused to do what the teacher said, refused to go with the principal, and refused to go with the cop. Sure you could write her up or expel her but how do you make her leave the classroom? She had no intention of leaving. She was spoiling for a fight and got it.

As far as the officer, I think it depends on his job performance. Has he done anything similar in the past?

IMHO, the 18 year old should have her freakin' arse thrown in jail.

The cop should NOT have been fired. The first tape (that went viral) only tells the LAST part of the story.

She is the prefect example of an out of control "victim" system. I see her spending a large part of her life behind bars. She has no respect for anyone or anything, because she's so freakin' special.

Really, I need a head banging emoticon.

Yes.  He was accused of assaulting someone but was cleared of the charges.

I love you right now Czech!  People are raising entitled brats and then cry when the police have to take action.  Teach your damn kids some rules.  Teach them respect.

And, unfortunately, too many kids are raising themselves!

I remember visiting a Head Start when I worked in inner-city Indy. We were waiting for the girls to get back from the restroom, so there were 4 or 5 little boys in the room. One little boy told me: "My daddy gets out of jail today!" Two other boys told me that their daddies were still in jail.

See, you gave a good example of the disrespectful (unlawful) raising another generation to be disrespectful. A child should not be proud of dad getting out of jail, the child should not have been aware of his dad being in jail. How sad.

Some things really should be kept from the children.

How do you keep from your children that their father is in jail? Certainly they realize he's not home. I just think you need to explain it in terms that dad did something against the law and is being punished for it. That's why we need to obey the law.

As opposed to: rotton cops were picking on him for no reason, he didn't do anything wrong. It's the cops and the judges who are all against us and punishing us for no reason.

The cop should not have been fired. She hit him. That means she deserves everything she got. I hate that the first article makes this about white cop-black student. That is BS.

I can't even imagine hitting a cop. When I get pulled over for speeding I'm so nervous I can barely look at them or speak. This girl has some serious respect issues.

I don't think there is a cop with any time in the job that doesn't have some kind of assault in their job history.

It's the nature of the job.

It gets physical sometimes.

Student walkout backs fired deputy at S.C. school

Students at Spring Valley High School wear homemade shirts saying "Bring Back Fields" on Oct. 30, 2015.

About 100 students at a South Carolina high school walked out of class briefly Friday to show support for a school resource officer fired after video showed him throwing an uncooperative black female student across the floor, according to local media and Twitter feeds.

The students walked out of classes at Spring Valley HIgh School in Columbia, S.C., around 10 a.m. and gathered in the atrium to express their views on the firing of Deputy Ben Fields.

Some in the crowd — which included both black and white students  — wore T-shirts reading "Free Fields" or  "#BringBackFields."

Some students had originally said their intent was to walk out of the building, but the students did not leave the campus, WLTX-TV reports.

Spring Valley High Principal Jeff Temoney sent a letter to parents afterward saying that the students were back in class within 10 minutes and that class continued in a "safe and productive manner."

"I addressed the students to let them know that we understood their need to make their voices heard," Temoney wrote, according to WLTX. "Then I reminded them that Spring Valley High is all about the business of teaching and learning, so it's time to go back to class."

School district officials told WCSC-TV that the walkout was "small" and "orderly."

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott fired Fields on Wednesday, saying the school resource officer did not follow the department's guidelines when he forcibly removed a black female student from a classroom Monday. Lott specifically said the deputy, who is white, broke protocol when he threw the student across the class.

In Temoney's remarks to the students, captured on video, he stresses that none would be suspended over the walkout.

"We've heard your voices, okay," the administrator told the protesters. "We appreciate you taking time to do this, but again, as you know, we always focus on teaching and learning, so let's head on back to class."

The footage of the original incident sparked a national debate on the officer's actions.

In the original confrontation on Monday, Fields can be heard telling the student to get up. A few moments later, he grabbed the student as she was in her seat, which caused the girl and the chair to flip over onto the floor. Fields was then seen dragging the girl for several feet and restraining her on the ground.

Lot said Fields had the right to put his hands on the student, but that when he threw the girl across the room, that is when he violated the training.

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a civil rights investigation into the incident

In a statement, Scott Hayes, Fields' attorney thanked people Friday for their support, adding "the positive response and heartfelt support of Ben has been overwhelming,"WCSC-TV reports.

Hayes continued, "We believe that Mr. Fields' actions were justified and lawful throughout the circumstances of which he was confronted during this incident. To that extent, we believe that Mr. Fields' actions were carried out professionally and that he was performing his job duties within the legal threshold."

Fields was a deputy for 10 years, and also served as an assistant coach for the Spring Valley High football team.
