I don't know what it is. Not really.

But if it was kept at the school, it would be locked in a desk, in a locked office, that no one there has a key for that day.

Well, out here in Tejas where the buffalo roam free... Okay not so much. We have nurses in every school. So they could give it. But they are really limited in what they can do. Kids with special needs bring their own nurse in. They use the nurses office for tube feedings and stuff but they have their own nurse.

HOWEVER, it is my understanding that there are some places that have one school nurse for the whole district. A district that may have ten or fifteen schools in it. So that would definitely be a problem.

That's us.

Our district has 4 high schools, each high school has 3-4 feeders middle schools, and those have 4-5 feeder elementary schools.

That isn't counting the 3 alternative schools in our district.

One nurse.

What I find strange is schools even having a nurse.

When I was in school, the secretary took care of the fevers, bumps and other minor issues.

Anything major, like broken bones, one of the coaches was called.

Most of the time you were told to walk it off, whatever it was.

Well, I think pretty much every school that I know of in PA has a nurse on staff. Now, our school actually is 4 buildings in 4 different locations. They are only a couple blocks from each other and the nurse will travel between schools. But, for the most part, you would really only expect to need narcan at the High School. Though I am sure there are middle schoolers starting into drugs too.

I say no. It will place too much liability on the school if a student dies after they administer it or if they fail to administer it.

You are the first one to bring that up, lol. We just had a Board Meeting to discuss whether our school was going to stock that or not. Those were some of the points.

I don't know that I have an opinion. Well, my opinion would probably get me banned from the board.

I say let them use drugs and drop dead. Then we won't spend the next 50 years supporting them on disability due to all the fvcked up diseases they have because they used drugs so long. So there. I said it. SS's uncle was a long time drug user. Cocaine. Because of the cocaine he destroyed his heart. He's been given a heart transplant but still does drugs sometimes. He recently had his foot amputated because he's diabetic and won't use his insulin. Drug users are a drain on our society, our medical resources, and our other resources. So there. I'm hateful and mean. How about that.

Lexxy brings up a great point.

I mean teachers, administrators and police are turned into bad guys in just about every single situation.

I don't know how trusting any one of them to give something like this would probably end up in a law suit.

Some. Very little though in general. And only if THEY want to. You cannot force them into treatment to get clean. If you do, when they get out, they will go back to using. It's a rare number that actually want to clean themselves up.

Well, a LOT of kids have tried drugs when in HS or young adults and didn't grow up to be drug addicts. So, you would be letting a lot of people die who otherwise will probably turn out OK.

I think you are being very simplistic about it. A nurse has to know when and how to use it. Will going to get the Narcan result in a delay of someone calling 911, etc. If the school employs LPNs and RNs, LPNs generally may not be able to administer that. What is the liability to the school if the school uses it and someone dies? What is the liability to the school if the school has it but didn't recognize the situation and failed to use it? We are studying this right now as a Board are in discussion with our Solicitor.

No. I think it won't be beneficial to anyone.

You said a nurse needs to administer it.

And you said you have 1 nurse for 4 schools.

So how long does it take to get from to the other? From the two that are the farthest apart?

And that's just one of the issues.

Schools don't employ RN's. Not cost effective. We make, on the average, about 10-12 dollars an hour more than an LVN. Again, that's an average. Most school nurses don't do much more than take temps, give a Tylenol, and call parents. Maybe a bandaid here and there. Yes, they are useful. But as for cost and what they are getting out of the nurse it is not cost effective to employ an RN.

That's the way it is here.

The schools here recently got those difibulators. I don't know how I feel about it.

Not sure how many school employees know how or when to use one.

You may also want to talk to your insurance division.  I think most public schools here at least are self insured but you still probably have someone or likely a department that deals with this.  From an insurance perspective you will be taking on additional liability.  I think if your solicitor doesn't nix this insurance will.

Not to make this sound like an insult but those defibs are make for anyone to use.  Even an idiot.  You push the button and turn it on and it tells you step by step what to do.  You have to be an utter and complete moron to not use it correctly.  It literally commands you step by step.

Yeah. Well. Have you ever talked to some of the school employees?

Sometimes I wonder how they get dressed in the mornings.
