Dear Harriette: Professor's Scorn
Permalink

DEAR HARRIETTE: I am a college student who made an etiquette mistake with my professor: I said "hi" to him when greeting him. He reprimanded me in front of a class of 50 people, saying I am to always say "hello" to the professor. He told me he did not get a doctorate for me to address him using "hi" as a greeting. I found this to be so rude, especially as he was lecturing me on how to be polite while embarrassing me in front of my classmates. After class, other students came up to me and called my professor names to make me feel better.

I'm not sure how to continue to be an active student in this class when the professor thinks he is above his students. Is it time to just be a face in the crowd? I was trying to be an active participant until this incident. -- Sad Student, New Orleans

DEAR SAD STUDENT: Drum up the courage to schedule a private meeting with your professor. During the meeting, apologize for speaking to him in a too-familiar manner. Then let him know that the way that he reprimanded you in front of the class was terribly embarrassing; plus, it backfired because many students felt compelled to speak derogatorily about him in defense of you. Tell him how hard it is for you to come to talk about this, but the reason you did was that you really want to be active in your class. Right now you feel uncomfortable about speaking up ever again

He's an AHOLE. No, I wouldn't go to the Professor to talk. That is going to result in another lecture from the AHOLE. So, just forget it, do your work and get through the class.

The first rule of dealing with Aholes is to Limit Your Exposure. You are not going to be able to reason with them or get them to see the error of their ways. They are self absorbed idiots who relish putting down other people. Just Don't Play.

I am assuming this is someone about 20 is writing the letter.

So why did they just stand there being lectured?

You give him the "you have GOT to be kidding" look and when he finishes you say in your most dismissive tone "guess you put me in my place".

A Ph.d doesn't make you better than anyone else.

Every student in Clas should start saying "hi" to him.

The professor was being an ass making an "example" of this kid - but he's not going to remember him personally, and that's probably the best way for it to be. He's the professor - and in charge of your grade - don't piss him off by attempting to lecture him back b/c pompous a-holes like him won't get it, anyway, and he'll just become worse.

Nothing will be gained by approaching this jerk. He did that in front of the class to assert his dominance.

This student might look into changing classes, if there's anyone else teaching the same course.

Yes, be invisible. Don't give this professor a reason to learn and remember your name.

I used to go out drinking with some of my professors. And still maintain that level of respect.

He should lay low with this one and just get through the class. Then report him to the dean.

What are you going to report? That you said "Hi" and the professor said next time to say "Hello"?

People who are hostile and verbally abusive to others know how to intimidate and be bullies in ways that make it very difficult to prove.

I had a few professors like this. Just take your lump and get through the semester. Guy is full of himself.

I agree.  I don't think such a conversation would be productive.  Just keep your nose down, do good work, and hopefully he'll get over his hissy fit so it won't affect her grade.

No.  Not the best course.  Just keep your nose down and get through the class.  The semester won't last forever, in fact it's likely more than half over, and just remember not to take his courses in the future.

Some college professors are a very special kind of arrogant and they live in their own little world. Do NOT provoke ire.

Taking either of the suggested actions would likely provoke the bully to escalate the situation.

As long as there is no hint of imminent violence, standing there and waiting for it to end is often the only decent alternative.

I think a lot of us had similar experiences not necessarily in college but life in general. And honestly i have been so stunned that i am speechless. But now i would tell someone like that to go F themselves.
