A Texas mother says her daughter was kicked off an elite cheerleading squad because her hair is curly.
But cheer officials said it was because of the mother's "negativity" and unwillingness to compromise.
Woodlands Elite Cheer told 11-year-old Makayla Fallaw she needed to straighten her hair to match the hairstyles of her teammates.
Her mother Jenny met with officials to explain that straightening "would destroy her hair."
Team director Kevin Tonner said they attempted to find "a happy medium."
He told ABC News that they showed her how to straighten her hair without damaging it, and that she would only have to keep it straight during competitions, where it counted for points.
But Jenny wouldn't listen, and so they asked her to leave.
"It wasn't about hair. It was about we don't want this negativity on our team,” Tonner said.
Jenny said she was not about to compromise on her daughter's natural beauty.
She plans to send her daughter to another cheer team.

A stupid reason to kick a girl off a team. I wouldn't straighten her hair either. The girl is beautiful and so is her hair.
But if they are going to get points deducted because they don't match--then why is it "stupid"??? Why should they have to lose placings and points for that?

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Um I don't really think you should be able to dictate the texture of someone's hair. That's crazy.
Exactly! And why are we GRADING our children on the texture of their hair? Holy moly batman.

Then I would do what the mother did, look fo another team. Costumes should match but, texture of hair shouldn't count. Should they all have to dye their hair to match too? It is stupid.

They don't set the rules as far as what counts for the competition.

Even Miss America doesn't judge you for the texture of your hair.

So, she can't flat iron her hair? As if that is going to DESTROY her hair? Oh the melodrama give me a break. Then someone will say they can't put in a ponytail for the same reason, blah, blah.

The rules are still stupid.
Well, maybe so--but that doesn't' mean this particular team should have to give up points in a competition because they don't like the rules.
They offered a reasonable compromise and mom didn't like it.

Frankly I don't see the big deal. I think the mom is looking for a reason to get worked up. Straightening her daughters hair a few times will not ruin it. I would have no problem curling my daughters hair for something if it were required, so I don't see how straightening it is taking away from her natural beauty, it's probably going to be pulled back into a ponytail anyway.
In dance their hair must be pulled back into a bun no matter what, even though a braid or pony tail would secure it just as well, they want them all uniform. It's the same thing, imo.
We watched an Irish dance team one time. They all had a certain style of curly hair. For some girls, it was their natural hair. Some of the other girls actually put on wigs for the dance.

And here is a pic of the little girl taken from a different site- I have a hard time buying the 'not compromising her natural beauty' line when she's wearing this much make up.
Not that there is anything wrong with it, just that if she really cared about natural beauty, it would apply to make up as well.

Yeah. Wow. That is a lot of make-up for a little kid. I was thinking like a high school cheer squad. She's like what? 11?

A picture I've seen of her was with her hair in a ponytail and no makeup. She looked like a pretty young girl. I'm sure the makeup was for a competition.

???? That makes NO SENSE. She can plaster on make-up like a h00ker for a competition but we draw the line at a different hairstyle???
ABSURD.

I watched the video clip in slow motion. All the girls are white. So, apparently, more then hair has to match, IMHO.
Yeah, I went there.

Even the mother didn't offer that up as speculation, which I think she would have been quick to do if she felt that way. If that is it though, shame on them.
As it stands, I doubt her daughter is the only one who had to straighten her hair for the team.

The daughter was already on an all white elite squad, race wouldn't have been a point of conflict for this mother. Especially if there are no other kinky curly haired girls.
My sister has kinky red hair, she has never been able to straighten her hair.

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.
She didn't even try though. If she was unable to get it straight, they might have found a different compromise like making all the other girls crimp/curl their hair to match hers, but they never got that far.
If it matters that much to them, then she should be on a different team. When I was looking for dance schools for DD, I didn't like the skimpy costumes of some of the schools... so I didn't enroll her at them. Instead, I found a different school which has a commitment to modest costumes. I guess I could have picked one of the other ones and made a big stink about it, but that seems silly.
Competition cheer is drastically different from side line cheer.
The make up is extreme.
The mother didn't want to compromise with the hair.
I'm curious as to what other things this mom has complained about.
And that girl looks white to me.
I think it's like they said, mom is too negative.

Just my opinion, with that makeup, she looks AWFUL.

Here, there aren't very many black cheerleaders. They just don't go out for the squad. However the dance teams are mostly black. I don't know what you are trying to say? Look at any cheer squad (even college competition teams), they are 99% white...

Don't you watch BRING IT, on TLC?
I LOVE Bring it On. But it does show the make up of Cheer squads. They are either white or black. Rarely mixed...
