But if they are going to get points deducted because they don't match--then why is it "stupid"??? Why should they have to lose placings and points for that?

Well, maybe so--but that doesn't' mean this particular team should have to give up points in a competition because they don't like the rules.

They offered a reasonable compromise and mom didn't like it.

Frankly I don't see the big deal. I think the mom is looking for a reason to get worked up. Straightening her daughters hair a few times will not ruin it. I would have no problem curling my daughters hair for something if it were required, so I don't see how straightening it is taking away from her natural beauty, it's probably going to be pulled back into a ponytail anyway.

In dance their hair must be pulled back into a bun no matter what, even though a braid or pony tail would secure it just as well, they want them all uniform. It's the same thing, imo.

We watched an Irish dance team one time. They all had a certain style of curly hair. For some girls, it was their natural hair. Some of the other girls actually put on wigs for the dance.

Not that there is anything wrong with it, just that if she really cared about natural beauty, it would apply to make up as well.

Even the mother didn't offer that up as speculation, which I think she would have been quick to do if she felt that way. If that is it though, shame on them.
As it stands, I doubt her daughter is the only one who had to straighten her hair for the team.

The daughter was already on an all white elite squad, race wouldn't have been a point of conflict for this mother. Especially if there are no other kinky curly haired girls.

My sister has kinky red hair, she has never been able to straighten her hair.

She didn't even try though. If she was unable to get it straight, they might have found a different compromise like making all the other girls crimp/curl their hair to match hers, but they never got that far.

If it matters that much to them, then she should be on a different team. When I was looking for dance schools for DD, I didn't like the skimpy costumes of some of the schools... so I didn't enroll her at them. Instead, I found a different school which has a commitment to modest costumes. I guess I could have picked one of the other ones and made a big stink about it, but that seems silly.

Competition cheer is drastically different from side line cheer.

The make up is extreme.

The mother didn't want to compromise with the hair.

I'm curious as to what other things this mom has complained about.

Here, there aren't very many black cheerleaders. They just don't go out for the squad. However the dance teams are mostly black. I don't know what you are trying to say? Look at any cheer squad (even college competition teams), they are 99% white...

The racial makeup of the city was 95.25% White, 1.27% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 1.04% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.35% of the population.

With a 95% white population, an all white squad is not anything racial - it's just math.
