We had neighbor whose dog needed a bra. Like, seriously Needed. Her poor boobies dragged the ground and flopped every which way when she ran around outside.
I felt bad for that dog.
If I had to choose between paying a vet to fix my dog and getting a new stove - we'd be cooking on hotplates and in the microwave.

A loved pet comes before material things, once you own the pet. I wouldn't buy a pet though if I couldn't afford the occasional emergency vet visit. But a pet that's inherited because a relative or super-close friend dies, well, that's not an option, so in that case that's where I agree with Lawyerlady.

Depends on what the pet needs done. I am not going to go to the ends of the earth trying to find cancer treatment for terminal cancer. Then again, I wouldn't do that for myself either. I think there is a cycle to life and there are things that are just part of life. There are some things I would do and some things I wouldn't. I get my pets all of their shots, neutered, etc. My dog got a big gash on her leg one time and I took her to the vet for stitches. Vets will do pretty much any and all treatments nowadays or recommend you and you can get the same level of care as human beings. But, when my dog was in renal failure, I knew that was the end of the road and no I am not going to fly to some animal hospital for dialysis because I think that is absurd. And, if I am in the position where I was so precarious financially that I couldn't even buy basic home necessities, then I would not have been owning a pet. I can't believe how many people have piss poor finances and lots of pets. I know people who own horses that barely have a pot to pee in. It's seems pretty stupid.
Okay, I'm getting a hamster for the boys. They will receive a habitrail under the tree and we can go the next day and pick him out. I'm pretty sure I can afford him.

Just never complain here about the cost of a car repair or having to buy a new appliance!

I remember my uncle having hamsters. He started with two.
Within a year he had a whole lot more than 2.

I just think saying "if you can't afford when something unexpected happens, don't own a pet" is disingenuous. First - she already owns it, loves it and is attached to it - so it's a pointless point. Second, a living thing is different than an inanimate object, and the emotional tie is not always logical.

Well, Husker, if she isn't asking you for money to fix her problems, then just let it go.
Let what go? It's a message board. We talk about annoying schit here. So what?
Let her FB posts go. He is trying to find a resolution to the frustration her posts bring her. I have no issue with him venting her.

We are going to block her. Again, she's a nice person--but really a downer, sometimes.
some of it, I know is just a difference in how we use Facebook. I'm just not in to putting my life story out there for everyone to see. Sure, I put some stuff on here, but that is different in that it is more anonymous.

Ok but you can make choices. You have to face reality. Some vets will recommend care to the nth degree no matter how futile. So you have to use commonsense.

And I don't know that aspect of the situation, although I do know that dog is pretty old, and even if the prognosis is good....there comes a point.

We're just getting one. I don't need a bunch of babies, although it would be educational for the boys. I've seen hamsters being born and it's interesting. However, I have access to animal labs so I'm pretty sure I can get them in to view births front and center.

And, most things are not a 911 emergency. YOu can go home and mull it over.

We had an emergency with Carlee. Took her to the all night vet. It wasn't that much. I think about $270. Something bit her face and she became lethargic and started drooling. She was awake but non responsive. Apparently she had an allergic reaction to something. They pumped her full of IM stuff like Benadryl and Epi and she was fine. We don't regret what we did.
Now Carlee is having seizures. She has them on a regular basis. We're debating on whether or not to put her on a medication because it's expensive and has really bad side effects. It's not the price so much as it is the long term side effects. She had a vet visit Wednesday and he ran some tests to rule out some endocrine issues but we really don't know why the seizures continue.
Layla has allergies. Yes, we have weird dogs. She takes an allergy pill every day. We do medicate her because her allergies are so bad they cause her skin to bleed. So she gets a daily prescribed allergy pill. Through trial and error we have found the lowest dose that keeps her maintained without causing the greatest side effects.
Hemi is 14. He has an infected tooth. He's blind, mostly deaf, and has terrible arthritis. In order to remove the tooth they would have to remove part of his jaw. An implant would be required to hold his jaw properly in place. The vet said the prognosis is fifty fifty. We have decided not to do the surgery. He may not survive. He is happy and, for the most part, pain free. We will provide only comfort care for as long as he lives. No life sustaining measures. DH and I have already discussed it. If he needs an antibiotic sure. Something minor like that then yes. Surgery, at this point, will not be an option. But I believe that he has lived a long and happy life. I would feel the same way if he were my 96 year old grand parent. There is a certain point in all life you have to accept what is.
Now our younger dogs? We would do whatever needed to be done for them. I don't think we would spend thousands and thousands if the prognosis was poor but if they suffered a broken leg or something like that then we sure would do what's necessary.

You think Carlee's seizures have anything to do with the bite and or meds she was given?

No. They think it was maybe a wasp or a bee or something. They didn't give her any weird meds. Just basic ones. And she was out of the puppy stage where things were forming so I don't really think that was it. Our vet says that when the seizures started she was at about the same age as a human teenager and that's when most seizures start in both dogs and humans. He says that was just the right age for it to start so to speak.

If you live from paycheck to paycheck and can barely support yourself or your family you shouldn't have pets. Their care should be set aside in your budget for health emergencies.

I didn't word it clearly, I mean if you have the means to care for a pet you should set aside money more emergency care. I wrote the statement in a hurry and left that off by mistake. Sorry

I took my chihuahua Pippin to the emergency vet a couple weeks ago. He was yelping in pain and couldnt put weight on his hind leg. They think he got bitten or stung on his foot.
It was 180.00
I held off on an xray and am glad....he was normal in a couple days. Ths shot made him all stoned that first night though, lol.
Im a nervous new dog mom!

Okay, so I have to say husker has a point. I belong to a local FB page and this lady is always out of food. I mean constantly. Mostly I ignore her posts but tonight she started a long thread about how she doesn't have a car and used all her food stamps up walking to the convenience store to buy food. She has ten cats and five dogs and they don't have food. She's been relying on her neighbors to feed her animals. People started offering to give her food but she complained that she was a vegan and she didn't eat this and she didn't eat that... She also ONLY uses coconut oil. She complained that all someone had brought was carrots and she had eaten so many she got sick. She also said she had problems with her blood sugar. She turned down about half the food offered to her because that wasn't what was on her diet. With no car she can't go to a food bank. I kept my mouth shut but really, does this lady need all these animals? I think not.

Carrots are terrible for you if you have to watch your sugar levels. Idiot on many levels.
Pretty much.

Wow. Some people. This lady should not be enabled.
I actually had some coconut oil I could have donated but, as heartless as this sounds, she would be begging again in a few days. It might help for a few days but until she learns to manage her own life it's going to be a constant and never ending battle of begging. As far as the pets go? She says she is almost deaf and the dogs keep her company, protect her, and warn her when someone is at her door. I get that. But she doesn't need five. Get rid of some of them. And sorry cat people, I do love me a cutie cat but they are useless for protection purposes. She just needs to get rid of all them to someone who can care for them.

I love our cats so much. No way we could ever have ten, though. Three cats cost us ~$100 a month between food and litter and other stuff.
Also, can you imagine the stench? You'd have to have at least five boxes and scoop them twice a day to keep that many cats happy. Is that what this lady is doing? Somehow I doubt it.
I think they are outside cats. From what I gathered in the thread she rents a tiny one room studio type thing. I love cats. I had one when I met DH but he was aggressive, not in a good way, when I first had him. When I met DH and brought SS around he went crazy. We had to get rid of him. DH hates cats too. That cat was superhuman anyway. But back to the story. No, whether inside or out she doesn't need them. And she needs to cut down on the dogs.
I love the site because almost every day I find out vital information. We recently had a police chief murdered and there was a lot of updated news in there about it. The site is basically called My Town Moms in the Know. It's pretty true what they say about telephone, telegraph, tell a woman. You can find out what's going on in town before it hits the news. It's a great resource for Easter egg hunting and Santa pictures. Also a lot of the mom's will post stores around town that have out of this world sales. So yes, it's a great site. But then there are people who use it to constantly beg. And I get tired of the sob stories. I'm not trying to be cold hearted but EVERYONE has a sob story or they wouldn't be where they are. And I know I get judged every time I say this but I constantly see women posting saying they are pregnant with their fourth child, don't have food for the other ones, have run out of food stamps, and baby daddy isn't working. It's frustrating.
They've also had to crack down a lot because a lot of the women were breastfeeding but telling WIC they were formula feeding and then turning around and selling the formula. Some of the WIC people belong to site and found out. Police got involved.

Ugh. It really stinks that people would stoop so low for their own profit.
I can't say I am surprise, though.
Working with the public, I quickly learned that everyone has a sad sad story to tell. The difference is some people tell it to you hoping to manipulate and others tell it to you because they feel a connection with you.
Nearly every one of our patients has told me their story for one reason or the other.
I do understand that people hit on hard times. I feel for them. Some people really have no control over their circumstances. Like jobs they have had for decades have closed down and now they don't have a lot of skills to get another. I understand that kind of situation. What I tend to see though is people making bad choices over and over and over again and then expecting the kindness of others to bale them out. One mom asked back in July where she could go to start signing her kids up on all the Angel Tree programs. Someone ripped her a new one and said, "If you would be responsible like the rest of us you could start shopping NOW and buy one gift a paycheck and not have to always ask for help." The lady responded that it was easier just to ask for someone else to buy the kids presents.
