So getting offended by someone saying you don't have something that you don't even believe exists is just stupid.

If a person takes an insult or curse in the context given, then it very well can be offensive.
If I tell someone "I hope you rot in hell" (not that I would, but if I did) they could rightly infer that I hope them immortal harm because I believe in hell, not because I think they do or should. They see my intent based on my perception of what I say, not based on their personal belief it it. and rightly get offended by the intent of my statement.

But saying "I hope" you rot in hell is FAR different than saying "I believe you will go to he!!.
I don't necessarily disagree with your statement in the "I hope" context, but that's not what we are talking about here. We are talking about a statement of our beliefs and them being offended by such a statement.
I believe that non-believers will go to he!!, especially those who have had many opportunities to come to faith and have chosen not to. I HOPE that they do come to faith before they die and avoid that.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

Yes. If someone yells at me "God Damn You!" I don't have to actually believe in a god to know they're not exactly praising me.

But that's not what we were/are talking about. We are talking about statement of belief--I think you are going to hell, NOT I want you to go to hell.
The latter does have intent, the former does not.

I am not the one claiming that something doesn't exist if Science can't prove it. So, obviously I do love my DH and kids. But, atheists do not and cannot because their God of Science tells them so.
I just remembered (I was in the shower...LOL) that a brain scan does show emotions.
flan
Prove it. How do you KNOW that is what the brain scan shows? Because a scientist said so? How do they KNOW?

You've already made up your mind.
How does a SCIENTIST know? How does a DOCTOR know?

How so? LOL. I haven't even weighed in on the topic before. And I haven't said I don't believe it. But once again, flan uses a stupid excuse not to answer a direct question b/c she CAN'T without ruining her illogical and pointless argument.

Flan, science cannot ascribe "meaning". Science does not explain WHY something should or shouldn't be. Science can show processes that ARE. That's it. They can't say WHY it should or Ought to be that way or not be that way. Science can't explain morality. You can't use science to tell us why the death penalty is right or wrong. Science can't tell you whom you should marry or how you should or shouldn't feel. Science can't answer the truly big questions of our existence.

THAT'S what I am refuting.

Flan, try READING. Atheists ARE the ones who say that something does not exist if science can't prove it. Sheesh.
Atheists say that God does not exist because science can't prove it. Science can't prove love either so therefore it doesn't exist and what you supposedly feel is just a random chemical reaction that is meaningless.

I didn't say that AT ALL if you actually will take the time to read and UNDERSTAND my points.
How do you prove love? How do you know that someone actually loves you?
Mostly through their actions. It's really more about what they do... not so much the actual spoken words. Actions prove love, but once you have that you can literally see the love in their eyes. For the most part, I consider love a verb. lol.
A heart? You mean something that pumps blood and beats? Because a heart is ONLY a physical thing. No real evidence of feelings, love, etc. Can't really prove that that matters somehow.
A "heart" means more than the physical organ.
If you tell someone to "have a heart," you're not handing them an organ...
flan
Why not? Science is the God of all that exists or can exist. Science can't explain love. Therefore, it does not exist.

I do read what you post. Emotions CAN be proven.
flan
Really? Emotions are pretty complicated. And, love is very complicated. One can love someone such as a mother or relative but yet have very mixed feelings. Feelings of disappointment, anger, etc mixed in. So, like feel free to present your Love Model. And, who has defined what "love" is? We probably can't even agree on the definition. If you can't define it, you can't measure it. Like what is Happiness?

Aren't there many people who have done all the right things? Worked hard for their families, etc? But, then their kids say "you didn't LOVE me". Someone who went through all the "right" actions but love wasn't demonstrated to them. How are you going to measure the sparkle in someone's eyes?

No you didn't. You said actions prove love. Most certainly NOT the case...
Yes they do. I can tell by someone's actions whether they love me or not. I can tell by someone's actions whether they like/dislike me or not. I believe that adults are capable of proving love through their actions. I don't expect the same from children, they don't have the maturity or wisdom yet. I can also say that sometimes I don't like my child, sometimes I am disappointed in my child, sometimes I may be angry with my child, etc... but my actions show them that they are loved unconditionally. Because I've never not been there for them when they needed me.
They seem to be confusing Scientific Method with other ways of knowing. We know a lot of things that science does not nor cannot prove. Why is rape wrong? Can science prove that? No, it can't. Yet we KNOW because we are created in the Image of God.

What actions? I have 2 cats. I take care of them, make sure they are fed, clean their litter, give them a comfortable living environment. I play will them and cuddle them and pet them. I do NOT love my cats. If I came home today and they were gone, I would throw all of their stuff out and never think a thing about it.

I'm offering proof that emotions are what we name them.
What one calls love, another will call runners high.
Actions can show affection. But they are reactions of chemicals released in the brain.
You cant, on paper, prove which is love and which is runners high.

Do you not love your cats?
I do. And people can tell how much I love my Kiddie by the way I respond to him when I walk in the door. They can see my face light up when I see him. My smile is bigger. You might think I'm joking but I'm not. I only have one cat btw. I'm sure you geeks can tell how much I love him on this message board just by the way I talk and post about him. It's pretty clear.
But anyone from the outside would think that I love my cats, too.
I don't love my mother. When she dies, I won't shed a tear. No one would EVER know that though. I take great care of her. I visit her and make sure she is comfortable. I kiss her good bye. I TELL her that I love her but I don't.

When someone says they love chocolate it is because when you eat it, it causes the brain to release the same chemicals that are released during sex.
Oxytocin, Dopamin, Seretonin, Endorphin.
These same chemicals are released through sex, eating chocolate, exercising, and child birth. And it's that crazy, can't be apart feeling you have for another person.
Wide range of possibilities.
So what is the emotion it proves?
It comes from so many different things, you can not, on paper, prove it is love.
It could be any of the things mentioned aboved.
