Charlie Hebdo Artist Asks World Not to Pray for Paris
Permalink

People around the world sent thoughts and prayers to Paris after three groups carried out a massive terrorist attack. However, Charlie Hebdo artist Joann Sfar drew a cartoon asking people not to pray for France.

The artist said the world does not need more religion. Instead, the religion in France centers around music and champagne.

He retweeted a message that calls praying for France “cruel.”

Authorities believe 128 people died and 352 were wounded in the attacks Friday night, for which the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) took responsibility.

In January, two gunman stormed into the Charlie Hebdo offices and slaughtered 12 people. The gunmen and their associates wanted to punish the magazine for drawing and publishing images of Mohammed.

Not surprised.

Like I said on the other thread, when you take God out, you let the devil in.

Frankly, I'm never offended when my friends say they'll pray for me, but I know that does bother some people.

I think what he did is sad. If you don't find comfort in prayer then so be it. Praying isn't hurting anyone. And it brings a lot of comfort to others. I saw this when it first came out right after the attack. I just don't like it. Have some compassion. If praying isn't your thing then don't do it. But don't tell the rest of the world that they need less prayers.

I'm sure he doesn't speak for everyone in France. Just because he and his friends feel that way doesn't mean everyone there does.

No.  I'm positive he doesn't speak for everyone.  But still, in times like those when so many people are hurting so much it's an insensitive thing to to.

I believe they will bring comfort for those who do believe in God and it doesn't hurt anyone who doesn't believe..

So doing nothing is helping how? Just because you don't find comfort in prayer doesn't mean others don't.

This.  And you don't ONLY pray.  Praying brings comfort but you don't just pray and ignore ISIS.  You still have to fight the terrorism.

My favorite quote of all time:

I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time- waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God- it changes me. - C.S. Lewis

If you want to pray to feel like YOU'RE helping, like YOU'RE doing something, go right ahead. The results will be exactly the same.

Once upon a time on GT, there were "dueling threads:" one was Christian & the other wasn't. It was a game to see who could get the most pages.

It was fun & light-hearted.

Now it's become nasty.

Well, whatever. They don't get to dictate who or what people pray for, nor do they speak for the entirety of the French people.

You've never truly witnessed the power of God. Prayer is a weapon. Not something pretty to be pulled out on special occasions.

I know, I know. You don't believe.

And that is how you kill the power of prayer.

Prayer and Faith.

Asking all things of the Father, through His Son, with Faith.

You go on making fun and belittling those of us with Faith.

It won't change my Faith. It won't make my prayer less effective.

The bitterness in your mouth is going to be incredible.

There are very few here who can disagree about religion without sounding condescending and insulting.

Here's the thing.

If you were born in a different country, you'd be praying to a different God. Not the Father or his Son. You'd be praying to Allah or Ganesha, or Krishna or Brahma or Kali.

You'd have a little altar in your house, where you'd have little statues of multi-limbed gods and you'd feed them milk and sweets, when you're not bathing them in the Holy Ganges. Yes, you would.

I choose not to believe in ANY gods.

I'm pretty sure I would be praying to the real God.  I know a LOT of people from other countries that have been converted.  They have set up churches all over the world, in their countries.  I KNOW for a fact that my God is the one TRUE God.  I have no doubts whatsoever.

You just said this a little (the bolded) earlier like you never sound condescending or insulting. Read what you write sometimes and stop acting all superior about what you bring to the conversation.

Oh, of course. If you were raised by Hindu parents in a small village in India, you'd still believe in a Christian god.

If you were raised by Muslim parents in a small village in Afghanistan, you'd still believe in a Christian god.

Keep telling yourself that.  It's adorable.

And....?

I know many people who turned away from Christianity and became Muslims. Became Hindus. Became Buddhists. Became athesists.

What I'm saying that if you were born elsewhere and raised differently, chances are that you'd be praying to a different god.

You'd be just as vociferous in defence of your gods and your beliefs.
