employer wants to know everyone's birthdates

Our new sales director just asked for a head shot photo and birth date for all the sales people.

I sent back my photo, which is like the one on my company ID card, and the month and day of my birth.

I don't think anyone outside of HR can ask my age. I'm concerned that, since I'm Medicare eligible, they might want to get rid of the people who could retire.

And I don't want to retire yet.

Do I have to tell the sales managers how old I am?

What? You don't want government insurance? Obama is the best insurance man on the planet.

And it can affect their cost for providing insurance.

You may not want to retire. But you be about to.

Better to retire than they find another reason to let you go and you lose anything.

Nope.  And you don't have to tell him your birth month/day either.

It's quite easy enough to get from HR.  Not telling him would just make him do more work. Not a good thing in Ed's position...

If it were me, I would just casually say I don't celebrate my birthday so I don't share it.  Here's my current ID photo.  Let me know if you need anything else.

Yeah, that will go far...

Ed's trying to keep his job, not piss off his supervisor.

You are eligible for Medicare at 65 even if you are still working, and yes, it will save your company money on your insurance.

The company has every right to know how old you are. I can't believe they don't already if you are getting company benefits.

Just send him month and day. No need to provide the year. It's just so he can give you a shout out on your birthday

I cannot figure out why the company does not know how old you are, together with your birthdate. I thought this was supplied on the application for work when you were initially employed...
Or is the guy just too lazy to look this stuff up?

Privacy laws, HR can't tell the boss.

Oh poo. They can easily figure out how old he is...school history, employment history. Thats one of the first things i do...figure out about how old they are...

And then when i get their paperwork, its always on there. Ive never heard of HR holding back birthdates. Ours sure doesnt.

BS.  That is simply ridiculous.  There are no privacy laws concerning that.  If you think there are--cite the relevant statutes.

Might be a good idea, Lily. LOL
I have been out of the loop so long that I do not know much about Privacy Laws, but from what I have read and heard, it seems they have been carried to extremes.....

Which means you have HR duties and you are not allowed to divulge that info to anyone who does not have the need to know.

Someone decided "oh wouldnt it be a good idea to post this info...." And these things take on a life of their own. If Ed protests then he looks uncooperative.

Right, so he gives his birth month and day and call it a day!  No harm, no foul.

Your date of birth is on your driver's license - which is public record. You have to show that all the time - to have something notarized, to buy alcohol, to enter a federal building. Your DOB is not protected info.

Seriously. In order to get into our building, you have to give us your drivers license and a copy is made. I can pull up that record any time I need to look through the logs...
