My day has gone to hell in a hand basket. This morning Carlee had a seizure and I ended up washing all the bedding. And towels. So that means four loads. I got Marilyn's birthday presents wrapped and was in the middle of wrapping my SS gifts when she had another seizure. So now I have two more loads of laundry and the dogs are getting bathed.
Oh my gosh, NJN.
That sounds horrible!
What's the next step, for Carlee?
It seems too hard, to keep going on this way. On you, and on Carlee.
Does she need more tests, before they can start her on anti-seizure medication?
We started her on Melatonin. The stuff you get over the counter. It seems to have slowed them down a bit. It's been awhile since she had one and they seem to be shorter. We can try increasing the Melatonin. She's not at her max dose yet. And depending on how that works we've decided to try prescription medicine if they continue on a frequent basis. It's expensive. And has bad side effects. That's why we've been waiting as long as possible.

Well, that sounds like a plan.
So, you can get her up to the max dose of the Melatonin.
And, if that doesn't work, you can try the Rx meds from the Vet.

Do I have this right?
Yes. We have her on five mg of Melatonin. She can go up to ten I believe. Twice a day. She seems to be having them further apart but the problem is once she has one it's almost like the floodgate is open for that day. And she will have multiple short ones in one day and then not have any for a long time. We're patient. We're going to try the Melatonin and see how it works. She's only been on it a week or so. Then, ultimately, we'll move her to the Rx meds if this doesn't work. She's not suffering. She doesn't even realize she has a seizure. It's just that we worry leaving her alone. We've also learned to read her and sense when one is coming on. You can't prevent it but we can kind of plan for it. The vet says he'll do whatever we want. He says not treating it will not harm her in any way. It's just an inconvenience for us. We have a good vet. He listens to what we want. My suspicion is that later on we will be forced to put her on the Rx.

Wait. You post almost every day that she has had one or more seizures. Are you sure you aren't telling yourself it is something less? I know it is a hard thing to accept but maybe you should reassess. Seems to me she is having 8+ seizures/week from what you post. Believe me, not being judgmental, i just think the reality is she is having more seizures than you posted.Poor baby.

Well, I'm not an expert.
But, isn't Melatonin something that takes a while to build up in the system, and work? (At least in humans, who try it for trouble sleeping?)
I haven't tried it. But, I did research it, a while back. (I'm not a good sleeper.)
From what I read about it....it could take a few weeks, to see if it works. I'm guessing, it would be the same for a dog. (But, I don't know, for sure.)
I think giving this a try, is a good thing, NJN.
Just give it a while to work, before you give up on it, and go to the Rx meds.
JMHO, as a dog lover. I would want to give it a fair shot, first.

Yeah, I am no expert either. Hope she is ok.

I think you're doing great! I would love to start, but can't while the kids are awake. LOL.

DS is home safe. Called me an hour ago. I refuse to calculate the mileage Vx the time, it would drive me nuts!
I've been on Groupon and ordered a bunch of stuff. I am soo almost done with shopping!
Yay! Glad your son is home safe and sound.

No. She's not having 8+ seizures a week. We know for a fact because we write it down on the calendar. She has a sort of pattern. It's not hard and fast. She will have ONE and then about ten days later, give or take, she will have one or two a day. Then it will be about three or four days and she has another one or two. Then it's back to the long wait before she has another one. The most she's ever had is four seizures in one week. We track them on the calendar so we can take it in to show the vet. Yes, it does seem like they're happening all the time if you don't mark it down. But when you look at the calendar you can clearly see it's not.
Yes, the Melatonin takes awhile to build up in their system. In dogs, when females are fixed, sometimes they can be left with a hormone imbalance. Or so the vet says. Although if they take the ovaries I guess that's plausible as that's how it works in women. The vet said Melatonin can often help the imbalance and soothe the nerves so to speak. Yes, humans use Melatonin to help them sleep. So I guess that makes sense to me that if she is needing something to relax so she doesn't have a seizure Melatonin could help.
Again, other than Rx meds there is no sure thing. We love her and we're carefully tracking this. The Rx can kill off her liver so we're trying to do alternate plans before we move on to that. We will do what's best for her.

Do you guys put your presents under the tree as you wrap them, or keep them hidden and bring them out Christmas Eve?
Gifts we give each other and get from friends and different family go under the tree. Santa would never leave his gifts under the tree early.

Depends on what it is.
The big gifts are saved till Christmas eve.

Mine go under the tree as soon as they are wrapped (and this year, they will be sitting in the living room waiting for the tree!). My mom is a horrible procrastinator, so her's usually aren't wrapped until the last moment. Which is also why I like to try to wrap as I buy. I usually end up wrapping a good portion of my parents presents. I've been know to have wrapped my own Christmas presents lol
I'm tempted to wrap my cousin's gift in the boring ugly paper. Is that too spiteful?

I have a friend visiting from out of town. She wants to get together tonight to catch up. At 8:00! I don't want to go out there, it's cold, and dark. I would really like to be in my PJ's already (it's 7:15 here). But it'll be nice to visit with her.

My mawmaw had a great big butcher block table. That thing could seat 12 easily and it was so huge and heavy.

Yep, all gifts but the big ones go under the tree as soon as they are wrapped. When the kids were little, nothing went under the tree, except what others sent, until they were asleep on Christmas Eve.

I have been without prescription pain pills for almost a year now.
I've took tylenol so much it's messing with my stomach.
But I don't want to go to a pain doctor.
I don't want to become dependant on it.

You do realize that not everyone that takes pain pills becomes a dependant addicted blithering idiot? Some people just take when needed and others take it on a regular basis. Not to check out of life but to make them more able to function in life and not just give up.

DH takes pain meds as needed so he can hold a full-time job.
Got my first holiday cards of the season written. Will work on getting more done on Sunday. I have a good number to send out this year and always include a heartfelt handwritten sentiment, so it takes a little more time to address a card.
Otherwise an okay sort of day.
