28 Signs You Were In Marching Band

They can take the instrument out of your hands, but they can’t take the music out of your heart.

Daja Martinez in The List on Dec 1, 2015

Forever haunted by the sounds of metronomes, drum majors yelling, out-of-tune flutes, big-headed sax and trumpet players, loud percussionist, and the "one more time"s, marching band is something that truly changes you and the memories and lessons learned sticks with you for life.

1. You're really good with routines. All that waking up early and staying up late has been good for you.

Band Problems:

2. You feel a weird emotional connection to any marching band you see.

3. When you return to your hometown football games, you are dragged into helping the band move equipment.

4. Every time you see your old marching band, you are judging everything. EVERYTHING.

19 Things Everyone In Marching Band Understands

5. You have really good time-management skills. Not everyone can balance school work, rehearsals, practicing, family, friends, future plans, anxiety and other activities.

6. You can immediately recognize any old tune that you've played.

7. You have immediate connections to people that used to be in band.

8. You judge people by what instruments they used to play.

9. You have a love for music that is unlike any other that anyone who wasn't in band doesn't really understand.

10. You know the reason that you're a good kisser is from years of practicing your embouchure and breathing exercises.

11. You are actually fond of bus rides after years of changing, sleeping, singing and practicing on buses.

12. When listening to music, sometimes you have to resist the strong urge to start conducting.

13. You own a lot of tall black/white solid socks.

14. You find yourself walking in step and in lines with strangers without trying to.

15. You also find yourself giving and responding to loud short commands.

16. You can't stand when people don't clap on beat. (It's really not that hard, people.)

17. Saliva doesn't actually bother you anymore thanks to years of trombones slinging it at you.

635826361809618087-1892341820_bc65019e1ce1025ade80303a5e2c5977.jpg

18. You're pretty good at dumbing things down (teaching freshmen how to march wasn't easy).

Marching Band Problems.:

19. The "this one time at band camp" joke has never been funny, especially since that is actually how some of your best stories start.

20. Tan lines don't bother you anymore, because you've had much, much worse.

635826382558747182975630818_051fa9017bcc571c48ed8458e6df2b7d.jpg

21. You hear a pop song on the radio and start judging whether or not it would make a good stand tune.

22. You like to think that you are pretty fluent in Italian thanks to all the musical terms you've learned

23. You are forever haunted with the loud clicks of a never-ending metronome. (I'm looking at you, Dr. Beat.)

24. "Hey Baby" will always be the greatest love song of all time. (Ooh ahh.)

6358263689551967441076156299_7298c9fe291bbbe092a01bce03cabf3c.jpg

25. The words "dot," "box," "block," "pit," and "one more time" have totally new meanings.

635826379026441726-490600867_f369327a6e83c3687ec6d93246423d386e88e247d28d330fc4edc138b2d939ee.jpg

26. You know how to take criticism and make yourself better, because band directors are not fluent in compliments.

27. You are (sadly) used to being under-appreciated.

635826381008157829-1571073963_247e6a81d6678158d9beeee06dba5d04.jpg

28. Most of all, you understand that, despite everything, the show must go on. Marching band has giving you the determination, strength and courage to continue no matter what, which is a quality that you will use for the rest of your life.

I was at a Utes game the other night GO UTES! And I was just thinking about how the games just wouldn't be the same without those nerds! Haha, kidding! Mostly.

They really do make it so much more pumped up and festive though!

I carried the tuba (Sousaphone) around for all football games; the marching band; the North Iowa Band Festival, etc. Four years... Loved every minute of it.

Most are nerds. But they do look like they have a lot of fun and get to travel a bit.

At my high school 50% of the school was in band. We had football players, cheerleaders, class presidents, nerds, and popular kids. Our band was huge and really really good. For some kids, it's the only team they will ever be on.

I really enjoy being in the band.

And, I sure miss the good old days.

You know, when they would show the bands at halftime at college football games, instead of a bunch of talking heads!no

I'd much rather see the bands!

It was fun. A LOT of hard work. But fun.

And our band was better than the football team.

We got all the awards and trophies. The football team couldn't get into the playoffs for nothing.

a marching band story--grew up about 2 miles as the crow flies from memorial stadium in austin--heard the longhorn band practicing/performing/game days throughout my entire childhood and into my teens--am a lead trumpet player and played all through middle-school, high school and college--when i finally got into the longhorn band it was like the realization of some dream i'd been having for as long as i could remember--my parents, and particularly my father, suffered through years and years of trumpet practice there at home and they had endured a great deal indeed--one saturday in the fall ( a game day for texas ) he came home after being all night at the hospital delivering a baby--he went out into the backyard with a lawn chair and a big glass of iced tea and stretched out to relax/recuperate--he was out there for a while and my mother finally came looking for him and asked what he was doing--" listening to jeff " he said and smiled--" he's in the big leagues now. " and i was

it would be another twenty-five years before i would hear that story from my mother--and it still makes me proud

The whole time I was in high school, our football team won about 3 games. Our band won state every year.

My brother played trumpet for about four years. I think the entire block suffered through his practice sessions.
That's so awesome that you carried out your dream, burns.

I spent 7 years lugging a sousaphone around the field. And yes, it was as tall (and in the early years taller) than me

Husband was a tromboner. Lol.
I played the flute for about two months in 7th grade before my schedule was rearranged so I could take honors English and couldn't take band anymore.

I did flags and riffles in marching band.

Percussion in concert band.

Marching band was so much more fun.

I can't tell you how many laps I ran, bottles of sunscreen I went through or how many blisters I had (feet and hands), but I'd do it all over again.

I think we had two of the best and worst directors ever.
