Does Kelly Need Snow Tires for Her Subaru?

snow tires
Dear Car Talk:

I wanted to follow up on a call I heard recently on your NPR radio show. A caller getting ready to replace a Honda Civic wanted to know if she needed all-wheel drive for driving in the snow. You guys suggested a Subaru. I had a Honda Civic (that I loved!), but just sold it and purchased a Subaru Forester because my husband and I just moved to Montana and are afraid to drive in the snow.

My question is this: Do we also need to buy snow tires? And do you have a recommendation in terms of the type (e.g., studded)? My last question is this: My husband is trying to convince me that it is worth the financial investment to purchase an extra set of wheels so he can change the snow tires himself each year. Thoughts?

-- Kelly

Yes, Kelly, in Montana you will need snow tires.

And you'll need four of them. Actually, you might want to put six of them on your Subaru, just to further appease the snow gods.

And it does make sense to buy four inexpensive steel wheels for the snow tires. Otherwise, you have to mount and balance a different set of tires every fall and spring, which runs into money.

Whether you need studs is a trickier question. It depends on exactly where you live and what kind of driving you'll be doing. If you live in a city or suburban area where streets are cleared pretty quickly, and you mostly drive around town, you might not need studs.

Studs have a couple of disadvantages: They chew up roadways, so they're not even allowed on a lot of highways outside of emergency conditions. And they make your traction worse on wet roads, because the metal studs that stick out of the tires have less traction than the rubber does. And we're not even addressing the constant thrumming noise. So you don't want those unless you absolutely need them.

I'd suggest that you talk to some neighbors and ask them what they do in the winter. A better option, for peace of mind, might be to buy a set of temporary chains. You can leave those in the trunk, and if you ever find yourself in a dire situation and your snow tires aren't cutting it, you can put on the chains by the side of the road, and at least get home. That's assuming they don't find you the next day, frozen in the "chain-affixing position."

And most importantly, remember this: If you know there's a blizzard coming, you always have the option of staying home -- unless you provide an essential service, like making doughnuts.

There are times with a Subaru when you can feel very smug when you are driving like normal while everyone else is slipping and sliding in the snow. However, even with snow tires a Subaru is not immune to bad weather, you still only have four paws on the road and common sense still applies.

I also bought rims for the snow tires, just an easy hour to switch.

Steel wheels are cheap, especially if you find them used which you should be able to do. I have bought used wheels and they cost me about the price of a single mount and balance so you will save money and time after only one season of use.

i can answer that , i had a civic also and replace it with Subaru forester 3 years ago and as i live in Quebec i must put winter tires .
so with subaru i've never hold a shovel .
you can park any where cause people that are afraid to get stuck in a pile of snow they leave the spot empty .
it handle great as i passed on ice and the yaris behind me turn 180 " didn't hit anything " .
its way comfortable then the civic .
you will have more room in the car .
Subaru's got higher level of safety anyway .
on another level you will pay more gas and Subaru maintenance is not fun at all "more complicated then civic "
snow tires are important its better for you and your safety to install them

As someone with an essential job I am a strong believer in snow tires. I would check online at tire rack for snow tire packages, get a wheel with a smaller diameter and a tire with a larger sidewall so your outside diameter remains the same and you will turn your subaru into a snow beast

just mount some ski's and shush down the road... or better yet a tank, but be sure not to arm it as those conservative minded folks in the sticks might get excited about going to war.....

  • Buy cheap wheels then your beautiful new car has a ugly wheels for months. Not necessary. The car is an SUV and most likely has all season tires on it. Get a set of chains just in case. On occasion you would need them anyway when required by Highway Patrol on mountain passes.

Hey!! It's Ed!!! Good!
As to the issue itself, OF COURSE you need snow tires. The more aggressive the better, always.

By the way, I don't use Facebook. I do get notices from FB a lot, but don't often have time for it.

Glad things are working out for you Ed!

As for snow tires, i live in PA. And, i HIGHLY recommend snow tires. And, people need to buy 4, not just 2 for the front. In fact, just buy snow tires exclusively and run them year round. Much easier than dinking around having tires changed. I am a fan of the Michelin Artic Alpine tires or Bridgestone Blizzaks.
