A former U.S. Air Force officer has branded the ritual of military football players kneeling in prayer a ‘putrid’ example of ‘Christian supremacy’ and demanded it must stop.

Michael Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), insisted the public prayers so often seen on the football pitch before games are ‘a scandalous outrage’.

He said Air Force Academy football players had approached the MRFF claiming they were forced into joining the prayers, for fear of punishment.

He even claimed that such a public showcase of Christianity could be used in anti-American propaganda produced by ISIS and al-Qaeda.

‘It’s a disgrace,’ said Mr Weinstein, who graduated from the Academy in 1977.

‘It’s a putrid example of fundamentalist Christian supremacy, triumphalism and exceptionalism and it has to stop.

‘Those individuals that are dressed in the Air Force uniform; that’s their uniform of the day. They’re members of the military and they are under different rules that the civilian counterparts they’re playing on the field.’

The Military Religious Foundation has allegedly been approached by a growing number of players and their families insisting that the team prayers aren’t optional.

Players join in, it is alleged, even if they aren’t comfortable doing so because they fear potential punishment if they refuse.

Mr Weinstein claims that because they are wearing their military uniforms, they are being coerced by the government to perform a religious activity – whether they want to or not.

‘We have families of players, we have players, we have girlfriends of players, we have staff and faculty 144 strong at the Academy,’ he said.

‘They’re terrified to go forward and go up the chain of command or to file an official complaint for fear of facing reprisal or retribution.

‘They should not be coerced in any way, shape or form to publicly sit there and engage in a massive team prayer for one particular version of Christianity.’

The Air Force announced this week that it will formally investigate the situation.

It said in a statement: ‘The United States Air Force Academy is attentive to all religious freedom concerns, and we are conducting an inquiry into the complaint.

‘The Air Force is dedicated to maintaining an environment in which people can realise their highest potential, regardless of personal, religious or other belief

It's slowly being removed.

The first ammendment is being eroded away.

No one is forcing anyone to pray. But you on the left want to deny those of us that do.  NFL players do it. Do you want them to stop to because you are such a whiny ass you dont want to see it? How is watching someone pray offensive? Your attitude is offensive...

It is propaganda.

No one forces another to do anything.

Just because everyone takes a knee, it doesn't mean they have to pray.

But way to deflect.

What is happening is eroding of rights.

If they were forced to pray, I have a problem with it. Prayer should be done because you want to. Faith under duress isn't really faith, is it?

If, as burns07 says, it's BS, then I have a problem with the person spreading the rumor.

You cannot force someone to pray. Prayer comes from the heart. It is no different than a moment of silence.

 I agree.

And the formatting of the article was wonky. Sorry, I couldn't read the whole thing.

And yet people don't have a problem with kids learning and reciting Muslim prayers, as long as its part of a curriculum...no

Forced prayer is wrong. If this prayer was coerced in any way, they deserve to be in trouble.
Why is that even up for debate?

Until someone was actually punished for not praying, this is a non story. Teams pray all the time, HS teams, College teams, even the Pros pray before and after the game. NASCAR has prayer before the cars start. People getting all mad cause other people are praying...tolerance at its finest!!!!!

They said the feared the reprisal of not praying, and we're deeply uncomfortable  and against the whole idea. Perhaps required is a better word than forced but it is still not okay!

And it is not just one person. It seems quite a number if players are saying they were told the prayers are not optional. What???

It's kind of like when we are forced to participate in a gay marriage except you don't get sued if you don't pray.

In October 6, 2005, Weinstein sued the United States Air Force for failing to prevent religious proselytizing in the U.S. Air Force. U.S. District Judge James A. Parker dismissed the case of Weinstein v. U.S. Air Force and wrote:[9]

No Plaintiff claims to have personally experienced any of the things described under 'Factual Allegations'... while at the Academy or after leaving the Academy. The only fair reading of Plaintiffs’ factual allegations limits them to practices and events at the Academy and policies as they affect persons, other than Plaintiffs, at the Academy...Not a single Plaintiff has alleged any personal factual situation that has allegedly impinged on that Plaintiff’s constitutional rights since the Plaintiff left the Academy.

just one example from the article's author's past--the court could not find ONE SINGLE PLAINTIFF to substantiate weinstein's claims

I have a idea, if you don't want to Pray don't. Let the ones who do want to Pray let them Pray. If you don't believe in God then people Praying shouldn't offend you. I sat next to a muslim woman on a flight and she did her daily prayers. I wasn't offended. (Me saying you was meant in general not to anyone on the board)
