We have these twice a year, and they actually are not bad.

Friday our speaker was an LEO from Lafayette (home of Purdue University). He spoke for about 90 minutes and the topic was...a shooter in the workplace.

We were in an auditorium on the second floor, 2 doors, and 2 closets...and he asked us to imagine that we heard gunshots in the hallway. What would we do?

He was very thorough, and gave the pro's and con's of each alternative: break the windows, hide in the closet... The doors opened outward and are typically NOT locked when the room is in use. He said that even barricading the doorway would help. He addressed the possibility of taking the shooter down...how to do it and what to do afterwards.

He also said that he had monthly handgun trainings & had a 96/97% accuracy rate, BUT, studies have shown that, in an actual situation with a shooter, the rate falls to 15%, because the shooter is moving.

So, if a trained LEO has that low of an accuracy rate...

Food for thought, in any case.

flan

p.s. He also said that if the shooter did enter the room, we should try our hardest to distract him...throw a water bottle at him, etc. I was talking with a few co-workers during our lunch break & said that I would distract him by taking off my dress...because that would be sure to make him run away screaming in terror!

We received active shooter training last week as well. And our church pastor has upped security and told us to be mindful of the exits.

I could flash him my saggy breasts and that would blind the shooter.

 Great minds...LOL

And this speaker was booked months ago, so kind of an eerie coincidence.

If everyone rushed the shooter, he/she could be taken down. Chances are, the shooter would panic if a massive crowd rushed him/her. The shooter is depending on people cowering in fear and obeying whatever orders he/she may give.

The speaker cautioned us not to force anyone who did not want to rush the shooter.

That actually stopped a shooter at a school.  I think some football players, teachers charged him.  They thrive of fear.  No you can't force someone to do that and until that happens I wouldn't know what I would do.

We were instructed to flight, hide, or fight.  Fighting was rushing the shooter throwing any object you can find at him to put him off enough to overtake him.  And if hiding in a room, to spread out.

To me, hiding in a closet or room makes you a sitting duck.  I'd rather go down fighting and trying to stop someone.

That's basically what he said, but he also cautioned us that, during the incident, our choices might change, depending on the actions of the shooter.

The bolded. Exactly. It throws them off their game when they know you're not afraid of them.

I've never been in an active shooter situation and never want to. I have been in other situations - robberies, near kidnapping, and others. Fun times! It can be hard keeping your wits about you when you know you're on the short end of the stick. But, like others here, I will not go down without a fight. I can be scared beyond belief but I will fight. I am not a sitting duck.

I think it would depend on how many shooters there were, but I think I would too.

If I were in the grocery store, I would try to make my way to the back, the meat department. I figure it must be near the shipping area and I could get out through the delivery area.

I've had a lot of training since 9-11 since I worked on a military base. They always wanted us to lock ourselves in an office and barricade it, not sure that is the way to go. If the shooter has explosives, you would be a sitting duck.

Fighting back is good but only if you have others to help. A single person with no gun will not be able to take down a terrorist with a gun.

Or even some crazy person with library fines...

One other thing the LEO said that I would not have thought about: If you disarm the guy, do NOT hold the gun on him. When the police come, they are looking for the person with the weapon.

That is correct.  If there has been a shooting, they are going to shoot the guy with the gun first...ask questions later.  You disarm him and beat the ever living crap out of him...

Actually, the sad thing is that the LEO told us specifically NOT to harm him. Several of us were talking afterwards...let's just say we made our own plans!

Yeah, you say, "Sorry Officer.  He slipped and hit every part of his body on the floor.  It was amazing I tell ya! Never seen anything like it..."  wink

My instructor told me to take him out if possible. But when the cops come, to make sure and show them our (empty) hands.
