Canada’s new progressive Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Twitter that Canada will receive the first group of 25,000 Syrian refugees on Thursday.
“It will be a great day,” he declared to the House of Commons. “Resettling refugees demonstrates our commitment to Canadians and the world that Canada understands that we can and must do more.”
ohn McCallum, the immigration, refugee, and citizenship minister, assured citizens the refugees will wait in line just like everyone else. “We do have to be careful that the refugees not be seen to queue jump,” he explained. “I don’t think it would be popular among those who have been waiting too long if refugees come in and suddenly go to the front of the line.”
Canada’s population of 35 million is one-sixth of the United States’s population of 310 million. So Trudeau’s 25,000 migrants would be equivalent to 150,000 Syrians arriving in the United States.
After he won the election, Trudeau promised to accept 25,000 Syrian refugees before 2016. He aims to keep his campaign promises. “Canadians get it, that this is about doing the right thing, it is about living up to the values that we cherish as a country and it is also an extraordinary way to continue to grow our country,” he said.
“Canada must immediately accept 25,000 Syrian refugees, stop dragging its heels and understand that we must once again be the country that we like to think of ourselves as. This is something that goes beyond politics. It is about who we are and what we want to continue to be.”
However, a month later, the government decided to only take in 10,000 by the end of the year.
Due to security concerns, officials “will limit those accepted into Canada to women, children and families only.” McCallum said those men deserve to seek asylum in the country, but the process “takes a bit of time to put that all in place.”
“We’re happy to take a little more time that originally planned to bring our new friends into the country,” he stated.
The Canadian Department of Defense confirmed their workers would participate in screenings, including medical, overseas. On November 22, the CBC reported that Canadian officials screened “100 people a day in Lebanon.” However, they did not mention specific details about the screenings and tests.
Not only have they entirely renovated an entire wing of the airport for them, but they installed prayer rooms for the men. So much for conforming to our values.
To add insult to injury, the government is paying businesses $15,000 a year to hire them ahead of Canadians who are looking for work.
People are pi$$ed.
They also get to jump the queue for subsidized housing. Not just any subsidized housing, but "high-quality" housing.
I know people who have been injured at work who have been waiting years for subsidized housing.

What the hell are you talking about? Your hallucinations about me thinking Muslims are great?
On the refugee thread, when we were talking about them coming into Canada and how bad that was for America, you flippantly told us to "build a wall".
On another thread on the refugees, when we were talking about the possibility of terrorists using it to get into the states and how dangerous it could be for all of us, you waxed on about how wonderful your town is and how we were all paranoid.
But now, here you are talking about all the money it's going to take. The actual cost of bringing what will amount to locusts into your country.
Different tune.

Yes, you should build a wall. They probably will come try to come into your country. Does that mean I love Muslims?
I said my town was wonderful because we were taking in refugees and you were all paranoid? I did no such thing. Please put up or shut up.
I have been asking you for five days to please quote ANY post of mine which is sympathetic to Muslims, seeing as how you claimed it's in all my posts. Come up with anything yet? Anything at all? Nope.
I even suggested you enlist your buddies to do an extensive search. Got anything? Nope.
Ooh, here's a thought. Why don't you pray to St. Anthony, the patron saint of Lost Things? Maybe he can help you find these imaginary posts.

Weltz all you have done is talk about how peaceful the muslims you know are. How they are welcome in your town.
You made fun of any of us who said bringing the Syrian refugees in was a bad thing.
You've gone so far as to call me ignorant and crazy because I said I don't trust any of them.
And now you are complaining about the money, resources and jobs these refugees are taking.
You can try to belittle me all you want. I won't run crying to a mod.
You were singing a different tune just a couple weeks ago.

How will taking guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens keep guns out of criminals' hands?
How will banning guns make law abiding citizens safer when criminals still have guns?

Trudeau is conferring immediate Canadian citizenship on these Syrian refugees.
He also said that he won't deport any terrorist with Canadian citizenship.
Sheer insanity.
So you were not making fun when you said "build a wall, we're not paying for it"?
And the banning of guns, you said guns need to be banned. You said guns were banned where you are. So, how are you sure the criminals where you live don't have guns?

Jesus Christ! What's wrong with you? I never said guns need to be banned.
I can't find the exact post, but you did sing the praises of Islam. You did say ban guns.
You said it.

Wow. Thats a slap in the face isnt it? Im not being snarky, I'm really surprised. I don't know that is is much better than Harper with this stunt, although worse would be a far stretch. Harper was (hopefully) one of a kind...a bad kind...

I know, eh?
And as Canadian citizens, they're free to travel immediately to the US.

Not true. Canadians do not get a free pass into the USA. We need passports and have to go through Homeland Security. I've been turned away more than once. You can be turned away for many reasons.

This isn't in regards to current situation. This is in regards to an actual Canadian, born in Canada who suddenly was discovered to be radicalized and Harper wanted to strip him of citizenship and send him to Pakistan where he was NOT born and never lived, thus setting a precedent that any 2nd generation Canadian who was born in Canada could be stripped of citizenship and sent to a country they'd never lived in as part of a criminal sentance.
Totally a different topic. Lets keep our Canadian politics straight, people.
Not only have they entirely renovated an entire wing of the airport for them, but they installed prayer rooms for the men. So much for conforming to our values. Such special snowflakes.
Also not true. At least not in my city. The families being relocated here are living in donated housing. From private donors, many of who were immigrants or refugees themselves, or people who are offering up their own rental units at no cost for the first year. There is no interruption to our subsidized housing waitlist in BC.
Can't speak as to employment, as there has been no discussion of that out here. Many of the families are being settled rurally, so there is plenty of work and it's not really an issue. Nobody has to pay anyone. They're just happy to have people to do the work.
Re immediately being given social security numbers and permanent resident status, subsidized housing and $15,000 incentive for businesses to hire them.
You can certainly travel to the US on a Permanent Resident card.
t also looks like the educational language law will be waived for them (it's never waived for anyone, no matter the circumstances) and public transit will be free.
It can take up to 42 months to get permanent resident status in Canada.
They're getting it as soon as they step off the plane. I'm not comfortable with this.
