It's comparatively new as an offering to the general public for "tracing their roots".  My dad wants to do it - he's seen advertisements on T.V. for the Ancestry.com version.

I searched a bit and the few sites I found are all over the board on both promises and price - has anyone done this?  Does anyone have information that might be useful before I buy it for Dad for Christmas?

There was a thread about this on another board. People had good things to say about it. I want to do it too. Apparently 23andme.com is a lot more detailed, but about twice the price of Ancestry, but Ancestry provides good info too. This is just info I got from other posters though.

From what I saw, Ancestry is about $100, and 23andme about $200.

Some only give you maternal results. Ancestry gives both maternal and paternal results. I want to do it too. I'd like to do it as well.

We've only done DNA testing on Jupiter.

It was the blood test, which costs more than the swab test.

And, it cost $144.

So, price wise....for people, this doesn't sound outlandish, to me.

Thanks all - Dad's father was adopted, so it may be quite interesting.  I'll go ahead and buy him the kit from Ancestry.com.  We know a lot about his mother's side of the family but half of his ancestry is a mystery.  I'll share what we find!

Jesse wants to do it.

I don't think it's a good idea.

It's data gathering.

I didn't do the dna test yet from ancestry.com but found out King Edward the 3 is my great grandfather (20TH)

I had a friend do it. It said she was a descendant of Aaron...the biblical Aaron. I don't believe it. Now she jokes about her uncle Moses...
